Israel have vaccinated 12% of their population already and are saying they hope to emerge from the pandemic by February, amazing

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 12:13

Dolly I've ordered the SPMG book. I know he needs to work on his tables too and keep an eye on what his teacher is doing online.

I'm hoping they'll do some online face to face stuff, why else do they need 2/3 in service days if it's not for a bit of training in that?

I feel for English parents right now, not knowing when the axe is going to fall on primary schools.

I don't want to say "I'm all right" but I know we are in a better position than many. Trying to count my blessings. I know the burden will land on my shoulders. But grateful I "only" work 3 days, work will let me flex my hours but they still need worked. Working into the night and trying to deal with kids in day is tough going.
Before anyone spouts DH should be helping, he's far our bigger earner we can't afford for his job to be put at risk.

runningpink · 02/01/2021 12:18

@Bikingbear what age is your DC? Iv made up timetable domino cards in the past, also bingo ones and using a Guess Who board.
If you check Pinterest you will be able to find them of that will help at all.
Makes it a bit more fun

That's awesome. I'm not sure what percentage have been done in China but I believe their vaccine has been available for months. I'd guess they haven't done same number of trials and stuff as the UK vaccines.
ladylunchalot · 02/01/2021 12:18
@ladylunchalot what’s happening with the two doses in Scotland?

I’d have vaccinations going 24/7! They need to mobilise anyone possible to give it
I honestly have no idea although the online booking system that staff use for getting the vaccine allows you to book the 2nd dose 4 weeks later. I can't get it at the moment due to a penicillin allergy and they're just using the Pfizer one at the moment. Not sure if that will change in the future though..... who knows, it's all so fluid.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 12:21

Running he's P5. Doing ok in school, just. Certainly not flying that he can afford to coast for a term.

WouldBeGood · 02/01/2021 12:22

@ladylunchalot thanks.

I was so excited the vaccines were here; should’ve known the governments would fuck it up.

Would, me too. I know our health board are advertising externally for admin staff and also clinical staff to administer the vaccines so I'm hopeful that with money being thrown at it, it will get down as quickly as possible.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 12:48

Lunchalot I saw an advert for people to work on the vaccine roll out its actually frustrating that they waited until now to recruit surely to God the staff should be waiting on the vaccine rather than the other way round.

Biking, I know, thought it would have been more of a priority. I've been looking internally for weeks to see if they were recruiting but the ad only appeared earlier this week.
WouldBeGood · 02/01/2021 12:57

The lack of preparation really annoys me. We’ve been expecting a vaccine for months; why not be proactive and get staff in place?

My DP’s whole job is resilience planning donut seems inane that the SG isn’t planning at all

WouldBeGood · 02/01/2021 12:58

Not donut 😂 So

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 02/01/2021 13:03

I fully expect to be back teaching (in school) on the 18th. Nothing I've heard so far makes me think they will extend it, though who knows?
We need the days next week to prepare - I would agree some online training would be good, but even when you've had that you have to make your lessons suitable for online and that takes longer than making ones for in school. All my work for returning is ready, I had done it before the announcement, so obviously that all has to be redone and changed now.
Remember in England they are protesting to get basically what we already have in Scotland - a chance to see what impact Christmas and new year have had on transmission before children are back in the building.

mondaywine · 02/01/2021 13:08

@Bikingbear I would possibly look at a different textbook to the one school used. So maybe TeeJay, old Heinemann or Scottish Heinemann? I used different ones with my P6 daughter to the ones she used at school. I’m sorry but I’ve missed the age of your child so this might not be suitable but I liked Corbett Primary Maths during lockdown. There’s also a secondary one. There’s videos for each outcome and a free workbook. Quite a lot of progression across the primary topics. DD liked it and made decent progress with it.

mondaywine · 02/01/2021 13:11

I foundTop Marks Daily ten really good for focussed tables across lockdown@Bikingbear. Massive improvement in DD recall. You can choose what to focus on and tweak as needed. She did it for ten minutes each day.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 13:15

I'll look at Top Mark's too. Thanks.

If he is into games then what I suggested might help and in more of a fun way but appreciate it may be boring for someone his age. Good luck!

I found that a blank multiplication square to fill in made mine crack times tables - because instead of this unknowable thing they realise they know most of it & just need a few tricks/rhymes to nail the remaining few.
Also did/do similar to domino game described above but with a message written on the other side so when they match it correctly & flip it over they discover where their snack or whatever is.
There’s a good game called Times Square too which is rolling dice & using the numbers to make totals that kill zombies (it appeals to my DS Grin)
Or this is free to play online (no zombies though!) www.proofmathgame.com/math-puzzles

(We HE though so apologies if this doesn’t fit)

help! we are having our steak pie tonight. DM made it and dropped it off, but says she doesn't know how long it will take in our oven [hmmm]. We normally buy a steak pie with cooking instructions on the label. So what do you guys think cooking wise? Don't want to burn it or undercook it either.

On a Covid related note, I did this vaccine calculator and it seems it will be another 12-18 months before I get both doses!

What is the pie status - cooked meat, raw pastry? Roughly what size (how many will it feed)?

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 02/01/2021 16:13

I'd go about 45-50 minutes at 180...

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 02/01/2021 16:16

its raw pastry, not sure about the meat (pastry's on top) and its for 2 people. I've always bought a ready made steak pie from the shop to bung in the oven or ordered one in a restaurant.

Quite small then, so I'd go 170 (fan) or 180 for 40 minutes.
DollyMixtureLulus · 02/01/2021 16:45

Times tables also need that understanding behind them. I wouldn’t set this as learning because our parents prefer the old style things and it can be messy etc, but search Pinterest and it can show you how to multiply with cheerios, lego, playdough, small toys etc.

If you divide a piece of paper into 4, you can also get them to draw a different strategy in each box (and repeat for the matching division).

rookiemere · 02/01/2021 16:52

Oh my lord Sad. I did the omnicalculator again. Last week it forecast I'd get the vaccine in June now it's saying Dec 21/Jan 22. I can't bear another year of this - I think it was Valley of the Dolls where one of the characters was put into a coma for a few months to lose weight - I could do with that for all of this year, and could do with the effortless weight loss as well, now I consider it.

I had girded my loins for a few months of shite, but a whole another year is more than I can cope with. I'm actually ok with being off work, maybe I need to request parental or unpaid leave - but we can't really afford it.
