Dookin for apples

Settle an argument please!

My husband pronounces this the way it's spelled. I've always pronounced it more like juking/djuking for apples.

He thinks I'm making up my own pronunciation can anyone back me up?! Grin

I'm with your husband, dookin

soloula · 28/10/2020 18:14

Yip dook like book

mumofBeth · 28/10/2020 18:18

I say it the same way as your husband.

AuntieSocia1 · 28/10/2020 18:20

I swear my family all said it like a juke box Blush

I said jookin tonight and he looked at me like I had lost my marbles. He continued to say dookin over and over again as though to make sure our dc said it properly!

Could it be a Glaswegian thing? Clutching at straws!

It’s pronounced ‘duck’ as it’s “ducking for apples”

Lidlfix · 28/10/2020 18:23

Grew up in a Glasgow overspill town and very much dook as in book. DH was once told he looked like he'd been dookin for chips due to his teenage complexion.

readsalotgirl63 · 28/10/2020 18:23

Im an ex Glaswegian and would say dook as in book

FelicityPike · 28/10/2020 18:24

Dook

dementedma · 28/10/2020 18:26

Dookin in Fife

Justmuddlingalong · 28/10/2020 18:28

I've live in different parts of Scotland and in all those areas it's been pronounced dook as in book. You can hide something up yer juke, (jumper), but I've only ever dooked for apples.

AuntieSocia1 · 28/10/2020 18:31

I accept I stand alone but it's too late for me now I've been saying it all my life But thank you, you are saving my dc from potential future embarrassment!

I'll need to ask my siblings if they have adopted the normal way or still say djooking

Also wondering if the way I say Duracell needs to change. Basically rethinking my life here Grin

Groovee · 28/10/2020 18:32

Dooking in Edinburgh.

Justmuddlingalong · 28/10/2020 18:33

How do you pronounce duracell? 🤔😁

AuntieSocia1 · 28/10/2020 18:35

In my defence it's not a strong j like up yer juke More like the way you'd say Duke street

I know I'm a lost cause.

If you tell me I should be pronouncing it dook street I really will question everything!!!

OP posts:
ApplePlumPie · 28/10/2020 18:40

I pronounce Duracell “Juracell” and Duke “Juke” as well OP but dook has always been “duck” not “juke”

Lidlfix · 28/10/2020 18:41

Durex? Sorry for lowering toneBlush

AuntieSocia1 · 28/10/2020 18:41

@Justmuddlingalong same way!

Same sound as duke street so would say it like djuke street--////// djuracell

Do other people say dooracell? What is wrong with me?! GrinGrin

OP posts:
AuntieSocia1 · 28/10/2020 18:44

@ApplePlumPie i have never heard it as ducking for apples but I am prepared to stand with you since you say juracell too. We are outnumbered though. At my Halloween party I'll juke and you can duck and everyone else can dook!

OP posts:
Justmuddlingalong · 28/10/2020 18:45

I say dyuracell and dyuke street. 😆

AuntieSocia1 · 28/10/2020 18:48

@Lidlfix haha same way! Dj ew rex

Grin sounds good, I’m in!

ApolloandDaphne · 28/10/2020 18:57

It's dookin from the word ducking.

MrsBungle · 28/10/2020 18:59

Dook as in book here too.

I love pronunciation threads. No idea why but they float my boat Grin

foxyknoxy30 · 28/10/2020 19:14

Definitely as it's spelled

AwkwardSquad · 28/10/2020 19:15

Dook as in book - grew up in Edinburgh. Fond memories of dookin’ for apples, and trying to eat treacle pieces on a string, with your hands behind your back
