Bringing in some light

It's hard for everyone right now, by varying degrees granted, and sometimes it's nice to blether. I'd like a thread that doesn't turn into political debate. A Chat if you like with a Scottish perspective that has a gentler vibe. I admire the posters with strong political views, knowledge, interests and thick skins - qualities I lack. But it's not for everyone.

My fig and blackberry candle is lit and my nice coloured gin bottles have wee LED lights in. I feel refreshed after my two week hols but worried about the term to come. Come share what you're doing to bring in some light, your wee treats, autumn booze concoctions or just blether.

Just checked, we have no tia maria and the vodka is untouched.

Glas we;ve found the reason C0NNIE but oreo milkshakes sound hideous - only a teen could love I guess.

Now I want a sparkly light up loo brush!! I just have the normal ones but they are MN marmite no? like a feature wall?

C0NNIE · 04/01/2021 23:36

Yup the milk shakes are indeed disgusting , they have a slurry of biscuit crumbs at the bottom 🤢

#Disappointed that your loo brushes are not sparkly.

Bytheloch · 05/01/2021 00:10

Twinkly shit and Oreo milkshakes at 2am, chat. I am cheered😊

Bytheloch · 05/01/2021 00:13

I’m here for the Oreo milkshake @C0NNIE I’d give that a DIY try. I once made a digestive biscuit milkshake🤪 in the early hours, after a night out. I can confirm biscuit sticks to the bottom and also doesn’t mix well in one of those Tupperware 80s shaker things.

NotAnActualSheep · 05/01/2021 08:41

I'm really, really wanting some twinkly twiggy shit now, I don't care how tasteless it is. DH announced to DS that it's new year's day (the most boring day of the year) again, and it's going to be NYD til about March. And we've taken down our Christmas lights and it's dark and rainy outside. Some twinkly bog brushes with candles in a jar on our hearth are exactly what we need to cheer me up, I think.

When I get like this normally I buy a new dress of shoes or something, but there's nowhere to go in them. Though I did get a new long puffy coat in the sales that I hope comes today. I think it will make me look like an obese caterpillar, but I will be a warm obese caterpillar and that's what it's all about I think.

ssd · 05/01/2021 09:02

Twinkly shit isn't tasteless!!

ikswobel · 05/01/2021 09:23

@NotAnActualSheep I bought a coat like that and can confirm the obese caterpillar look complete with Ugg boots however it is the cosiest ever and makes me happy just to put it on

NotAnActualSheep · 05/01/2021 09:55

Ha! Fab. That's what I'm after. I've been wearing the same coat every day since about October, and granted it is warm, but I'm so bored of it now and I fancied a change. I want to live somewhere where my diverse coat wardrobe gets more of an airing. I have Plans for slinging on a leather jacket or a nice wool wrap coat and looking all cool and stylish. But it's raining or really windy and about 2 degrees and I'm back to the sodding sensible padded khaki parka with a hood that comes all the way over my face.

FlippingBottleFlippers · 05/01/2021 11:12

Nowt wrong with an oreo cookie milk shake, my youngest DC adores this but I use a blender, ice-cream and a couple of mini cookies decorated with squooshy cream and another cookie. No sludgy crumbs in ours. We mastered this in lockdown 1 as he was missing his favourite treats from our local restaurant. We are also embracing twinkley shit and candles every night.

titsbumfannythelot · 05/01/2021 14:41

Slightly on the subject of milk and booze I tried the disaronno velvet at Christmas. I'd recommend it. But perhaps not with Oreos.

Rae36 · 05/01/2021 15:15

My lovely Jo Malone candle is bringing light into my life this afternoon. It was a Christmas present, it's quite Christmas themed I would say but I'm using it anyway. My wee work from home corner is dark at the best of times, never mind a day like today, so my candle is cheering me up.

I also took our Christmas tree down but stuck the fairy lights in a glass vase so we still have twinkle in our lives, just in a more subtle and tasteful way.

Also I have ignored the kids all day so I can crack on with some work so they have just played on their various devices all day and haven't argued at all. Which is not really sustainable but it worked for today.

titsbumfannythelot · 05/01/2021 15:34

We all just have to take each day as it comes.

Lidlfix · 05/01/2021 16:01

Short term goals, get through a day or make your way to the next weekend. My slightly hippie way to remind myself that despite everything the world keeps turning (there was a super moon near the start of lockdown 1) was you'll still be ok by the next full moon .

Now you all know I'm bonkers Grin

I had slightly too much fun buying Christmas candles during Black Friday so still plenty of those to get through. I've got the same candle rae and bought for my sister so we could have the same Christmas smell this year even though she couldn't come here, it's very hygge and winter-y I'm sure.

Sturmundcalm · 05/01/2021 16:55

my husband mocked me last night for my bottle lights being similar to my candles - as in, I buy them and they sit around cluttering up the place but i hardly ever use them... he's not totally wrong but i still like having them. the freixenet bottle works exceptionally well with the lights BTW

Rae36 · 05/01/2021 17:12

@lidlfix we live near the sea and got a Christmas gift of a poster with all the tide times and phases of the moon for the year. I love it. Its really visual (which is a stupid thing to say given its a poster) but it helps you visualise how everything flows in a month and year

Lidlfix · 05/01/2021 17:55

That's a fab gift Rae, that would turn me into a total tidal lunar geek. Along with a fondness for twigs, sparklingly shit and having 4 loo brushes, I can add to my bingo card of Mumsnet anathemas my hot tub Grin. We love watching stars, the planets and the moon waiting for our favourite satellites whilst talking utter rubbish in lovely soothing hot water.

Going hippie again but it really helps me regain perspective to know how small and insignificant I am. Living by the sea would be great for that sort of grounding.

Dh is always complaining that all the extra candles I put out at Christmas are just "clutter" Xmas Hmm

He's going to be disappointed when I don't pack them all away along with the rest of the Christmas decorations Xmas Grin

My extravagance this year was another large (triple wick) White Company Winter candle, as my old one is nearly finished, plus 12 Winter tea lights Xmas Smile. The first one eventually arrived smashed and I had an extended saga with The White Company chat/customer service which was crap before I was able to get a replacement one sent out (I managed to establish via the Chat that the Glasgow store had 6 in stock so I'd be able to exchange - but they couldn't/wouldn't - and nor would the phone based customer service when they eventually called me back contact the Glasgow store to ask for one to be put aside. And the Glasgow store, for 3 days, wouldn't answer their phone when I tried calling. And breeeeeaaaaathe Wink) which arrived after Christmas and which I've not lit yet.

Dh has suggested wearing leather gloves and breaking the rest of the shattered glass off the broken candle and then putting the block of wax into the winter candle glass that is just about finished.

C0NNIE · 05/01/2021 18:47

What is wrong with all you people taking down your Christmas decorations??? It’s not even 12th night yet ( unless you’re an Anglican / Episcopalian).

I’m leaving mine up to get me through the rest of this week. No it’s not lockdown or even the Oreo cookie milkshakes - it’s helping Ds1 ( AKA the worlds most annoying and ungrateful teenager) with his Higher English persuasive essay.

Fortunately I have wine from @prettybird and notes from @lidlfix as I’m rapidly losing the will to live. Why did no one tell me that teenage boys were like this??? My two DD just got on with their school work and asked for help when they were stuck.

Aaargggh

ssd · 05/01/2021 18:48

Oh I love the white company winter candle, its gorgeous, but what a faff for you to go through!!

ssd · 05/01/2021 18:50

My tree and decs are still up, i need the twinkly lights just now

prettybird · 05/01/2021 18:54

Sympathies CONNIE - maybe the wine will help numb the pain Xmas Wink

....BTW: I'm not taking down the decorations until the last minute tomorrow Xmas Smile - and the ritual "throwing out the window" easiest way to get it out the house will take place the next day Xmas Grin

titsbumfannythelot · 05/01/2021 19:15

Ah some South African wine, sounds lovely. 1st February isn't far away-right? Sad

Wbeezer · 06/01/2021 09:12

We've been having the decs debate, DH has looked it up, apparently decorations used to be left up until Candlemas which is the first of February.
