Bringing in some light

It's hard for everyone right now, by varying degrees granted, and sometimes it's nice to blether. I'd like a thread that doesn't turn into political debate. A Chat if you like with a Scottish perspective that has a gentler vibe. I admire the posters with strong political views, knowledge, interests and thick skins - qualities I lack. But it's not for everyone.

My fig and blackberry candle is lit and my nice coloured gin bottles have wee LED lights in. I feel refreshed after my two week hols but worried about the term to come. Come share what you're doing to bring in some light, your wee treats, autumn booze concoctions or just blether.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas Xmas Smile. We were (unusually, in recent years) able to enjoy Christmas and his birthday (same day Xmas Wink) with my Dad: a direct consequence of the current situation as he'd normally be in South Africa over Christmas.

We had a lovely meal on Christmas Eve with my Dad (it's a Danish tradition his mother was brought up in Denmark ) and then he stayed over and opened presents with us in the morning.

Giving this a bump, we all need some light today.

Lidlfix · 04/01/2021 17:05

Thanks, and you are spot on.

Have left the lights in our wee cosy corner and a set in the kitchen. So we still have some twinklyness to enjoy. With everything Xmassy away they are just lights. Couldn't actually get the high up outside ones down due to black ice that never melted all day.

Did manage a weak attempt at humour when I remarked to DH that this lockdown shouldn't send our hot tub chemicals price soaring as lazy spas aren't recommended for use in frosty conditions .

Hello @titsbumfannythelot @titsbumfannythelot we need this thread so much today.
The Christmas tree came down this morning but I've kept the wax burner Christmas scents out and going with them until they are all used up. I've got the fire roaring and going to have a wee sherry soon. Saw that on Twitter today - breaking news - dry January cancelled in Scotland!!

titsbumfannythelot · 04/01/2021 17:30

👋🏻 I'm currently regretting my dry January commitment....

ikswobel · 04/01/2021 17:32

WineI've learned my lesson. Sober October didn't go well

NotAnActualSheep · 04/01/2021 17:35

Ooooh. Just placemarking... Hadn't realised this thread was here til it was referred to on The Other Thread. What a lovely idea Smile. I confess I hadn't even attempted dry January this year, for obvious reasons. We've just taken down our decorations and swept up the 30zillion pine needles so I'm feeling a bit blue, so a warm cosy corner is much needed I think. Wine to those that want...

anon444877 · 04/01/2021 17:35

I've never understood why you'd go dry for the most depressing month of the year...and this year more so. I've made it 4 days! Gappy January is the goal here, as well as getting through without a huge weight gain!

prettybird · 04/01/2021 17:38

Our Christmas tree won't be coming down until Wednesday - the last possible moment! Xmas Smile

The last picture/video every year of my "Christmas album" is of the Christmas tree being thrown out of our first floor window: it's the easiest way to get it out the house! Xmas Grin

ikswobel · 04/01/2021 17:43

What is gappy January?

anon444877 · 04/01/2021 17:45

Just longer gaps between drinking than usual, I'd be trying for the same with chocolate but I'm shelving that for a later months challenge this year.

prettybird · 04/01/2021 17:46

Dh has just poured me a glass of port (which I got him for Christmas: the Sainsbury's "Taste the Difference" vintage port that I bought effectively for half price as part of the Nectar double-up promotion) which I'm enjoying with a slice of home made Christmas cake Xmas Smile

titsbumfannythelot · 04/01/2021 17:47

I know what you mean anon but I have drank too much in 2020 so trying to reset. Plus booze is a luxury at the moment due to tightened belts etc.

anon444877 · 04/01/2021 17:48

Ooh I've had that port, it is great.

Well that looks bloody marvellous
anon444877 · 04/01/2021 17:50

I admire anyone that can do dry jan @titsbumfannythelot or veganuary - I've failed at that too! Really any day off for our livers is a result after 2020.

Sturmundcalm · 04/01/2021 17:51

I did the first ten minutes of this at lunchtime today (when my ice grippers still hadn't been delivered). The sight of other folk in sunshine and warmth...

I'm trying not to drink for the next few days but did break into the sweeties before dinner!

ikswobel · 04/01/2021 17:52

That port looks great. Never lasts a day in our house unfortunately

Wbeezer · 04/01/2021 17:59

DS3 wants a last Christmas celebration so ive committed to doing a twelfth night meal and he wants me to make one last batch of mince pies, he actually enjoyed Christmas despite the restrictions and doesn't want it to be over.
I've decided to sign up to a virtual running event ti give me a fitness goal. I joined a gym last January and really made good progress until the first lockdown but list my momentum.
I've given myself a tidying task too , sorting out all the boys old lego kits, funding missing parts and instructions so they can be ebayed, hoping to earn some spending money for a future holiday.
Have to phone the dentist broke a crown at the weekend but not sure if that counts as an emergency.

Wbeezer · 04/01/2021 18:03

@titsbumfannythelot had the last slice of Christmas cake today sadly but im enjoying a glass of oloroso sherry with some twiglets.

titsbumfannythelot · 04/01/2021 18:06

Well I started the healthy eating too today. I must be bloody mad.

I've never had Sherry, might add it to my February list....,

Lidlfix · 04/01/2021 18:12

Did a festive drinks tasting in Dec and Sherry is best enjoyed with a salty snack apparently. I can't get a taste for it myself. Or port. Which DH is very relieved about.

I've only recently learnt to enjoy port dh is most upset Xmas WinkWine

Actually, we usually have Cape Vintage, the South African equivalent - but we need to get more stock in Xmas Blush

Lidlfix · 04/01/2021 18:43

Interesting Prettybird my lovely colleague assures me I just haven't met the right Port yet. DH is in no rush to set me up.

I can't quite get over the it's like wine but it's not wine and it's sweet. Since my next European jaunt was (quite rightly) cancelled this morning ouch, maybe I should transfer to Porto or Lisbon for October.
