Bringing in some light

It's hard for everyone right now, by varying degrees granted, and sometimes it's nice to blether. I'd like a thread that doesn't turn into political debate. A Chat if you like with a Scottish perspective that has a gentler vibe. I admire the posters with strong political views, knowledge, interests and thick skins - qualities I lack. But it's not for everyone.

My fig and blackberry candle is lit and my nice coloured gin bottles have wee LED lights in. I feel refreshed after my two week hols but worried about the term to come. Come share what you're doing to bring in some light, your wee treats, autumn booze concoctions or just blether.

I've just bought a rather gaudy Christmas cushion at Cancer Research UK for £5.99 with a jolly picture of a dog on it. Both rookiehusband and rookiedog have been eyeing it suspiciously, but unfortunately Aldi is sold out of the 6 foot light up characters so it's the best I can do to induce a festive feel ( even if it's way too early)

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 17:28

Chuckling away at the suspicious dog. What have you purchased in the past to make Ddog so wary?

Oh @Lidlfix your cosy corner sounds lovely. Now I covet both a burner and a covered corner outside.

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 17:53

Sadly cosy corner is not covered so the omnipresent pissing rain presents a problem, though are sails any good ?

We have a few indian/hindu families in our street so looking very festive for Diwali. I'll let them have their own moment before digging our stuff out :)

Not that we ever do too much to be honest, bit too lazy and always convinced my two that we could look out and see everyone else's lights so we didn't need too many of our own. Bad mum!

But this rain is really getting too much.

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 18:55

I like to think my neighbours enjoy my projected falling snowflakes and laser show Wax. From 1st Dec to 2nd Jan - public service Grin

I'm sure they love it. They used to do a projected thing at my work back in the days that people went to work instead of sitting in our houses. I can't even be bothered getting the proper artificial tree out nowadays and have gone minimalist with a twig thing that takes about 5 minutes to get up and running and a few bits and bogs spread around. I do like my twig thing though and am always tempted to just leave it up.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 19:34

Twig thing in action

Bytheloch · 15/11/2020 19:45

Either that’s from the archives Wax or you are one v.organised festive Mumsnetter with the presents all good to go 🤣

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 19:46

Minimalist twig is very tasteful and chic. It looks very scandi do you all have Fairisle sweaters too? We tried to talk our resources manager at school into letting us have one - was going to be our poettree and we would change the decorations according to season or to respond to current events. We are not allowed unauthorised electrical items .

No that's from last year Bytheloch. I do have some gifts bought and have done some wrapping but tree not up yet and struggling with my lists and ideas generally.

I did have a FB memory from 9 years ago last week where the DSs were away at camp and I did all my wrapping and filled the stockings.

That's a shame lidl, could it not just arrive when the PAT testing is due?

I like the light from it as it takes the place of a standard lamp that usually occupies the corner so would be happy to remove the little bit of decorations and just either have it bare or do things for each season. DH not having it though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 19:53

Oh and fairisle sweaters would be lovely :) or fairisle t-shirts for the menfolk who feel the heat!

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 19:54

Have bought DS2 and girlfriend fake oodies on the basis that they might not have bills included in accommodation next year!

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 20:02

That is a great idea we do have a technician who is a an ally . Your idea (another thread) about envelopes with a month a treat money was great. I pitched it to DD3 as she is also away at uni and careful with her spending, she thought it was great . I am going to do gift cards to ensure she does treat herself.

Aww thanks, i thought it was good for those that don't really know what they want.

I was originally going to do gift cards but you'd need to be wary in current times and choose places that were definitely going to be in a position to honour them.

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 20:21

She asked for Lidl. She has no idea of my secret identity. Grin

Nando's, Ubereats, Top Shop etc goes against my support small local businesses but her Santa list so her choice

Dear god, not fair isle... starts scratching

rookiemere · 15/11/2020 20:24

This is my winter dog, although he was £5.99 rather than £3.99 in the shop.Rookiedog has taken it badly and snuggled in on DHs sofa tonight whilst giving the cushion baleful looks. Mind you DH tried to give him a bone earlier and that sets him off into some weird Im not worthy cycle until we three it away.

Ha ha are you sure she wasn't testing the waters?

All good choices My thoughts when thinking about cards were very similar, Nandos, cinema, maybe a record store as he likes his vinyl. Got him Slade's greatest hits for Christmas, not sure what he'll make of that Grin and I guess there is always Amazon. The other point is that he is a bit shy when it comes to using a voucher and also evouchers get forgotten about.

I'm still hoping he comes up with something I can buy. Jeans got mentioned the other night but he just likes plain ordinary black skinny jeans and anything designer would be a waste.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 20:31

Aww that's cute @rookiemere. The large size is £5.99 so presume that's what you have and you didn't get stung in the charity shop.

I don't think Dcat would be amused but then i've spent half the day looking for a bargaineous bit of sheepskin for her bit of the kitchen sofa, so also very spoiled.

rookiemere · 15/11/2020 20:35

Ah yes didn't spot that @WaxOnFeckOff regretting not having got my friend the cat one - she also loves a bit of Christmas tat. Hopefully I'll get there before all non essential shops get shut

Am also thinking of ordering some usb lights to go round my computer screen. We've not been able to do as much desk decoration over the last couple of years in the office as the health and safety officer kept taking it down so I can really go wild at home this year. I'm sure there would be some sort of ironic justice if our house goes on fire because of it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 20:42

you could get luminoodle lights @rookiemere, they are specifically to go on the back of screens and do a glow effect (with different colour settings defending on what you buy) supposed to help with eye strain too. I have some put away for a Christmas present.

rookiemere · 15/11/2020 20:55

Oh yes they look good @WaxOnFeckOff although slightly above my bargain basement cost threshold! I'll buy them if they close us down on Friday to cheer me up.

prettybird · 15/11/2020 21:31

Icelandic jumper wot I knitted ds (with merino wool Wink) for ds to cope with Aberdeen winters.

Bringing in some light
WaxOnFeckOff · 15/11/2020 21:36

very nice @pb. It's times like that that you'll be glad he isn't as big as he'd like to be....saves on wool and knitting time!
