Bringing in some light

It's hard for everyone right now, by varying degrees granted, and sometimes it's nice to blether. I'd like a thread that doesn't turn into political debate. A Chat if you like with a Scottish perspective that has a gentler vibe. I admire the posters with strong political views, knowledge, interests and thick skins - qualities I lack. But it's not for everyone.

My fig and blackberry candle is lit and my nice coloured gin bottles have wee LED lights in. I feel refreshed after my two week hols but worried about the term to come. Come share what you're doing to bring in some light, your wee treats, autumn booze concoctions or just blether.

I'm wondering whether to buy a velvet tunic dress to go with the merino tights I haven't ordered yet. Feel the need for soft and cosy.

S00LA · 12/11/2020 22:05

Looking good @prettybird, thanks for the photos.

I have made two wreathes and a Garland tonight . By “made “ I mean they were plain ( artificial foliage) ones from Aldi and Lidl and I fastened cheap baubles, pine cones, more foliage etc and lights to them.

I’m not at all crafty so this is an achievement for me.

The wreaths are sitting on a table with a large pillar candle in the middle.

The Garland is 5m long so will go on the mantle piece and drape down both sides, as opposed to the usual 1.8m ones that just sit on top.

A bargain at £12 from Lidl. Oh and it’s pre lit.

As those of you with Victorian flats / houses will know, it’s hard to get decorations that are big enough for the high ceilings.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/11/2020 22:16

I saw someone on a local selling site was making wreathes using old wooly tartan scarves and looked really good if that's an idea?

WouldBeGood · 12/11/2020 22:18

I’m having no frigging tartan here 😂😂

Lidlfix · 12/11/2020 22:27

That tartan might be in demand for football next year! My DH has had an emotional journey tonight. Tears have been involved. Bless him he's not into Old Firm preferring local teams and Scotland. Wee bit light for him tonight.

Well done Scotland. Those penalties were nerve wracking. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/11/2020 22:37

We are generally more of a rugby house as DH is from the Borders. I say that, but DS1 isn't interested in any sport and DS2 has taken to supporting Liverpool over the last few years. However he now can see Pittodrie stadium from his flat so was intending to offer his support while he is in Aberdeen, but that's sort of on hold for now...

WouldBeGood · 12/11/2020 22:38

Scotland winning is definitely light!

user1487194234 · 12/11/2020 22:43

Well done Scotland

derxa · 12/11/2020 22:51

We bloody did it

Bytheloch · 12/11/2020 23:24

I inadvertently chose the penalty shootout time to pop something in the outside bin- I heard cheering coming from all directions. It was lovely to hear everyone sounding so happy🤗

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/11/2020 23:25

I've no affiliation with the following link, but it was put into a Facebook group set up for local businesses to advertise their wares and let folk do some non Amazon shopping.

Looks like a fab wee kit to make some glass decorations that the family can do:

S00LA · 12/11/2020 23:46

They look lovely @WaxOnFeckOff

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/11/2020 23:56

They do don't they? I suppose £8.50ish is probably quite dear for a glass ornament if you just bought them, but it seemed reasonable for an activity and the ornaments when completed. As I say I have no affiliation, it just seemed to fit with the crafty mood we are all getting into these dark nights.

S00LA · 13/11/2020 00:30

I think you are paying for the fun of making them and the pleasure of remembering for years to come when you hang then on the tree, rather than just the ornament.

anon444877 · 13/11/2020 14:54

they are lovely ornaments - I have a relative who sends lots of glass ornaments - they are a bit dangerous with the under 8s or so though from an admiring and dropping point of view.

baker ross has 1000s of christmas crafts for younger ones though if anyone hasn't found there way there!

my favourite christmas ornament is a really badly done Father Christmas made out of a toilet roll and cotton wool at the library when dd1 was about 3.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/11/2020 15:00

I have a couple of reindeer faces made from lolly sticks and googly eyes that still get hung on the tree and DS2 made a glittery bauble and someone with nice writing put his name on it with glitter. He can only get things with his name on if we get them made bespoke so he was chuffed.

anon444877 · 13/11/2020 15:29

that's a good idea for a craft! only 6 weeks to go now (hohoho).

titsbumfannythelot · 13/11/2020 15:31

I have just ordered myself the brew dog 12 gins of Christmas. That should make me 😊

Lidlfix · 13/11/2020 16:36

Think I'll get the Brew Dog 12 beers one for DH , I had looked at the Advent Calendar but it was a bit pricey and they'll be going in the fridge anyway. I think Brew Dog is great. I love a cheeky Itison for pizza and a beer flight.

titsbumfannythelot · 13/11/2020 17:02

I bought the beers too. I like brewdog too, good to give money to companies that we like

Lidlfix · 15/11/2020 12:59

Very excited as we are doing our annual light audit today. I am aware of how wanky that is and (hopefully) will be the most pretentious thing you read today. We can check our (visible from space) indoor and outdoor lighting and replace any that haven't survived storage. DH has said he can do something that means our hard to reach but sheltered little seating corner can be lit up. I am hoping to have the chiminea blazing, cosy blankets and mulled wine with my DSis or DM once everything is up and switched on in 2 weeks! If it stops pissing down long enough.

OP posts:
prettybird · 15/11/2020 13:11

That sounds lovely Lidlfix Smile

We don't have a chiminea and I'm not going to try to buy one now Wink but we do have a braai-come-fire pit.

I'll maybe think about getting some more fairy lights so that we can string some around the patio. Always assuming, as you say, it stops pissing down for long enough to enjoy Hmm

anon444877 · 15/11/2020 17:02

I like the sound of an annual light audit, I'm thinking of retrieving the plastic Christmas wreath (the kids brought it home last year) to put out soon. I saw some lovely lights in the shops this weekend...

WouldBeGood · 15/11/2020 17:05

Ooh, all sounds so lovely and festive 💕
