@Tamingofthehamster

How will the border work? It’s not all that easy, is it. (And I’m a no, so I will also leave the thread)
How do borders all around the world work?

It's not a specially unsolvable issue just because it's Scotland and England we're talking about.

Tamingofthehamster · 22/10/2020 08:11

Well it seems to unsolvable in Ireland so I was just wondering what we would do differently in Scotland?

Scotslassie1 · 22/10/2020 08:12

You mean if we're in EU and England isn't scenario?

CraftyGin · 22/10/2020 08:15

@Svelteinmydreams

Ok I will post it here, this is a discussion forum. Why start a thread that brooks no discussion.?
Obvs learnt from Wee Nippy.

Hell fucking NO

Dreading2020sSeasonFinale · 22/10/2020 08:46

@Babdoc

This thread is so typical of the SNP mindset. No debate. Just chanting mantras of Westmonster bad, independence good. No regard for the advice of their own economists, who have warned they face 25 years of austerity if they choose independence. Scotland’s deficit is already nearly double Zimbabwe’s. It will be worse still after the pandemic. What a stupid time to be trying to break up the country, losing all the UK subsidies and support. Good luck trying to find the cash reserves to set up your own currency, mint and central bank. Ditto your own armed forces, pension funds, benefits and health service. And paying extra for your mortgages and imports with your new weak currency.

@Torvean32 I'm in the central belt. Sticking to the rules. Pissed off supermarkets are still not bringing back distancing measures as far too many people getting right up next to you.

Trichford · 22/10/2020 10:26

🙋🏼‍♀️ ASAP!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 22/10/2020 10:40

I'm genuinely curious: why would anyone want to push for independence now? I can understand the arguments about controlling your own affairs etc. even if I don't agree with them, but I really don't get he push to do it in the midst of a crisis, which could have many more months/years to run before we come out the other side. We have Brexit looming as well as COVID restrictions decimating the economy, and who knows what state any of us will in be once the dust settles (including the EU, who are also having a very tough time right now). The UK has its problems (and I count the current, temporary, incumbent at number 10 among them), but it remains one of the largest economies in the world irrespective of Brexit or COVID. Surely now is the absolute worst time to take a massive leap into the unknown (so many questions still unanswered) and hope the EU is willing and able to catch us.

FelicityPike · 22/10/2020 10:43

Always have been “yes”, always will be “yes”.

Pyewhacket · 22/10/2020 10:47

NO

rorosemary · 22/10/2020 10:50

My vote doesn't count/matter because I'm an EU citizen but can I just say that if you do get independance I really hope you'll come back to us.

AgentProvocateur · 22/10/2020 10:52

Yes from me.

chipsandpeas · 22/10/2020 10:53

yes

grumplass · 22/10/2020 11:28

@Tamingofthehamster there is a good reason why NI border is such a disaster and it's a direct result of British Colonialism setting it's newly independent territories up to fail through conflict . See also India, Palestine.

Yes

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 22/10/2020 11:43

@grumplass I don't fully understand what you mean, but are you suggesting that Brexit won't be damaging for the UK? So that's not part of your reasoning for wanting independence? I know this is part of the reasoning for a lot of Nationalists, but I confess I don't understand this argument either, because if leaving a trading block (EU) will destroy an economy the size of the UK, surely leaving a G6 country from a much lower base will be even more devastating for Scotland?

My personal view on Brexit is that it probably will do some damage (and remember the UK government actually argued for remain), but I doubt it will sink the country, precisely because the UK economy is starting from such a high base. The Scottish economy is not starting from the same position.

Of course, none of this answers why the push is now in the midst of the COVID crisis?

Did you not read the memo? You are not allowed to say no.

SBTLove · 22/10/2020 11:47

@OhioOhioOhio
Again, the thread was to gauge how many Yes voters there were not to listen to Unionists and their ramblings.
Just a simple YES, it’s quite revealing how many NO voters are too hard of comprehension to follow a simple post 🙄

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 22/10/2020 11:51

"Just a simple YES, it’s quite revealing how many NO voters are too hard of comprehension to follow a simple post 🙄"

Or...maybe they don't agree with shutting down discussion on a discussion forum.

grumplass · 22/10/2020 11:54

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us

My argument is that if Brexit is going to be so manageable for the UK, why is independence impossible for Scotland?

The pandemic is horrible but not going to be a huge barrier. If it is why isn't Brexit postponed?

The Scottish and Uk economies will be absolutely ripe for stimulus after Coronavirus. Both countries should be able to sell long term gilts to allow investment in infrastructure and employment. We both have the baseline economic conditions to be wealthy independent countries.
Scotland does want to be in the EU and indications are that we would be welcome which will enable us to keep our food and farming standards aligned and to benefit from freedom of movement and employment which is a big contribution to our academic and scientific economy.
England has indicated it doesn't want this.
That's fine and they are welcome to it.

Yes please go it would be great not to have to subsidise them and they take their share of the national debt.

Politically we in England are very different from Scotland who would never want a tory government. I was a big supporter of independence last time round and will do this time round.
