@ssd

Safe from what? The enormous poverty and reductions in life expectancy that would be caused by another lockdown?

ssd · 30/10/2020 23:59

Safe from the virus what else. It's no use having a job if your dead. I know it's shite but the numbers are horrendous.

Ecosse · 31/10/2020 00:01

@ssd

The economy has a huge impact on health. There will be deaths and health problems caused by the impact of unemployment on individuals and D.C.

Bikingbear · 31/10/2020 00:03

@WouldBeGood

I suspect this is why she “spared” Lanarkshire
She spared Lanarkshire because she got a letter from the two councils, signed by both the police and NHS Lanarkshire saying not to do it.

The Police are sick of house parties, inc the religious gathering of 20 people!

Ecosse · 31/10/2020 00:07

It wouldn’t make any sense for her to create a whole new regional system from scratch just to ditch it before it’s even come into place and shut down everywhere.

The contrast between England in lockdown and Scotland starting to open up would be very advantageous for her.

WouldBeGood · 31/10/2020 00:09

Bet you we get full lockdown soon

WouldBeGood · 31/10/2020 00:10

There is absolutely no way she’ll avoid lockdown of England doing it

Callisto1 · 31/10/2020 00:16

It would be crazy not to do the same as England, since there will probably be a time limited economic support package. Why mess about with tiers for months if a 2-3 week reset could all get us back to how it was like in the summer?

Ecosse · 31/10/2020 00:28

@Callisto1

It wouldn’t get us back to the summer though. All a ‘circuit breaker’ does is kick the can down the road a few weeks. As soon as you open things up(which you have to as we can’t just stay at home indefinitely), cases rise.

Cases seem to be plateauing in Scotland now and are nowhere near the level of England so there is no need for a lockdown that would close many businesses permanently.

Scotland has had stricter measures throughout and NS will want to demonstrate how her decisive action in her eyes avoided the need for a lockdown.

fluffyugg · 31/10/2020 07:31

@Ecosse I wonder if you're right and to be fair, our latest lot of restrictions started mid September (no in home socialising) so it seems that we were ahead of the game here.

WouldBeGood · 31/10/2020 07:46

@Ecosse I really hope you are right!

The stress is awful and I suppose I’m just preparing in my head.

littlbrowndog · 31/10/2020 08:20

Gawd I have given up believing any scientists or experts anymore

It just goes on and on and on with no end in sight

ssd · 31/10/2020 09:17

I really don't see how we can avoid a period of lockdown if the other 3 nations are doing it. If their numbers go right down because of it and our numbers are much higher we'll just start looking really bad and NS knows this.

Disposableplates · 31/10/2020 09:20

I hate this leak to the press approach, but this one is even more confusing as does it include Scotland or not? Where I am is actually doing OK just now after getting our knuckles rapped in August.

@Ecosse I hope she does take your approach but have seen an article on twitter where she says another national lockdown may have to happen, which makes me think she will follow the UK Government. I know its been said before but a United approach really might have helped the situation and stopped unnecessary stress and confusion.

I am meant to have a week away in a tier 2 place in a couple of weeks and it would be nice to know if its going ahead or not.

Scotslassie1 · 31/10/2020 09:26

When the MSM and BJ say national they refer to plans for England ( Wales are currently in a lockdown as are NI, albeit with schools opening next week). It does cause extra stress for everyone but it's just how it is.

I really hope we've done enough in Scotland and taken action early enough to avoid a full lockdown. Time will tell I guess.

ssd · 31/10/2020 09:27

I agree the reports are confusing, the BBC report says UK then England when discussing a lockdown, how are we meant to know if we're included?!?
Sheesh

ssd · 31/10/2020 09:30

It's kind of like the weather reports at the end of the news when they say oh its been a beautiful day and it's poured in Scotland all day...

RaspberryCoulis · 31/10/2020 09:31

@littlbrowndog

Gawd I have given up believing any scientists or experts anymore

Exactly.

And the more they blether on about tiers, and non-essential shopping, and fuck up over track and trace, the more people think fuck it and go about their own lives.

That poor old biddie in a care home - think she was 102 - saying that it was against her human rights to be refused visitors and she didn't care if she got covid, she just wanted to hug her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Because she's102 and doesn't have long left.

We cannot carry on like this for much longer. Yes "protect the NHS" whatever that means. But I do not believe for ONE SECOND that any lockdown that they're talknig about would be a month and more than we had a 16 day circuit breaker. Which was then 3 weeks and is now tier 3 ad infinitum.

2020 has truly been the most shit year of my life so far. November is always a shitty, wet, dark and completely joyless month. This year is going to be HELL.

RaspberryCoulis · 31/10/2020 09:35

That linda woman was just on BBC saying that Scotland's cases are beginning to plateau so we can perhaps avoid the full lockdown.

No wonder though when I was on shift in the charity shop this week the Christmas stuff was flying out the door. People are buying now jsut in case. If they do follow England (or more likely one-up them with a better, bigger and safer, more caring lockdown) all non-essential shops are going to be stuck with tonnes of stock they can't sell in time.

Disposableplates · 31/10/2020 09:37

I understand its just the way it is but was just having a whinge. Convinced we will follow suit, only time will tell.

@ssd love those weather reports as I'm usually like what rain!

Scotslassie1 · 31/10/2020 09:43

Yeah, it annoys me too, I was just saying that the plans talked about definitely only relate to England. ( Hopefully reassuring for some)!

Scotslassie1 · 31/10/2020 09:45

I saw that old lady and I don't know why she's not having visitors as it is allowed. Hopefully she's seen her family now.

throwingawaymyshot · 31/10/2020 10:03

That old lady on the news broke my heart. It is one small blessing that all my grandparents have passed away. I'd hate to have them so scared.

I noticed that mobile hairdressers are not allowed to work until tier 1. I was hoping to use mobile hairdressers so I wouldn't need to worry about my communication difficulties. Now I can't even do that. Is there not an exemption to that rule on disability grounds? Do I need to DIY my hair eeeek

IwishIwasyoda · 31/10/2020 10:04

The scientists are not infallible. A lot of the statistics don't necessarily tell the whole story.

The indicators / measures don't really tell you what you need to know IMO - for example what does a death' within 28 days of having a positive Covid test' actually mean? A far better indicator is the number of excess deaths and I haven't seen this information published recently.

Why don't we see the deaths from other causes alongside the Covid statistics i.e. cancer deaths, those from heart conditions, suicides? Why does no one reference the fact there were approx 50,000 excess deaths in winter 2017/18 (England and Wales only) because of flu www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/excesswintermortalityinenglandandwales/2017to2018provisionaland2016to2017final

throwingawaymyshot · 31/10/2020 10:06

PS I know they might still have to wear a mask if working mobile but at least there is less background noise and my DH could be there.
