Highland Cathedral

Just reading the thread about ‘what classical music gives you goose bumps’ and I didn’t want to ruin their vibe by mentioning bagpipes 😂 But does anyone else get a lump in their throat when they hear Highland Cathedral? I don’t know if if it’s because I’ve heard it played at funerals (but also weddings) but it makes me well up every time.

Absolutely.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 29/09/2020 19:07

Definitely. My husband plays in the pipe band, love hearing them practice it. I love mairi's wedding too 😊

singtanana · 29/09/2020 19:47

Definitely, in fact sometimes just hearing the bag pipes in general. From gala days, to Remembrance Day to weddings and funerals they signify a togetherness for me. Highland Cathedral is particularly poignant as it was played at a funeral I attended.

DD used to play in a really successful brass band and they regularly played it. Last time I heard her play it (knowing it was her last ever performance in the band) I did big wet sobs. It was beautiful. She misses being in the band terribly - we moved a long way away.

100% it was always a favourite of mine to sing in school as my grandparents loved it and often had bagpipe music on in the background while they cooked etc. Can vividly remember my granda whistling along as my gran sang.

Whenever I hear it I well up and get a lump in my throat, which is unusual for me!

I'm Welsh and in a choir and we sang Highland Cathedral in Dunkeld Cathederal! Absolutely stunning setting and sobbed whilst singing! My favourite Scottish song.
Also recently at my Scottish FIL funeral the piper piped him into the crematorium playing it! Beautiful and full of memories for me!

MiddlesexGirl · 29/09/2020 20:15

I love bagpipes but am not Scottish.
I will look up Highland Cathedral.

Groovee · 29/09/2020 20:38

Yup. My niece got married using it to walk in to.

SugarButterFlour · 29/09/2020 20:40

I never realised the music was written by a couple of German musicians and fairly recently - had always thought it was completely Scottish (and traditional)

LoosingBattle · 29/09/2020 20:49

Nothing worse than when you are prone to crying at bagpipes and you come across a lone piper at mile 20 of a marathon. Sad Why would they do that? Why? Grin

Minty82 · 02/10/2020 17:02

Oh definitely - I’ve never lived in Scotland but my dad’s a Scot and I have a genetic lachrymose reaction to Highland Cathedral. Unfortunately DH is allergic to bagpipes...

JorisBonson · 02/10/2020 17:03

I had a solo Piper playing this at my (first) wedding and it made me cry so much I had to go away for 10 minutes!

DuckASick · 02/10/2020 17:03

Are you even Scottish if you don’t well up at the bagpipes?!

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/10/2020 17:05

Yep, another one here who had it as my entrance song at our wedding on the bagpipes

OllyBJolly · 02/10/2020 17:12

Also had it as my wedding aisle song. Love it - gets right into your soul (and I knew it was German not Scottish!)

I tear up when it plays at football or rugby internationals. I want it at my funeral as well.
