Facemasks in shops.

I mean really, what is the point now? If they were useful then the time when they were useful was months ago.

Surely the chance of catching covid in a shop is minute, the chance of then being ill is more minute and the chance of dying is vastly remote.

It just feels like it another thing to say just to keep control? I have no problem doing things that make sense and protect others, but really? Public transport where you may be in the vicinity of someone for longer seems fair enough but shops doesn't make sense.

IME so far, having a mask dangling from your neck without even being worn seems to give people carte blanche to stand less than a foot away from others.

It's impossible to argue with idiocy.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 13/07/2020 22:47

So how exactly does that work then? How do you know that pretty much everyone who doesn't want to wear one doesn't also have issues similar to Dinosaur that they don't want to talk about?

I think that's a very valid point. It took 2 years of therapy for me to realise that I have nothing to be ashamed of. That saying "I was raped" is not a reflection on me or a stain on my character. Across the mask threads and from trauma groups I'm in, there are lots of women in the same situation but who haven't got official diagnoses or who haven't confided in family or haven't reached that stage in the process yet.

sonicbook · 13/07/2020 22:48

@Mascotte Clearly I can only hope one day to reach your lofty heights of intelligence!

You're self confident certainly.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 22:50

So if, in the last month, 5 people had flu out of 94,000 in your area and even if 10 times that had it but didn't know, how scared would you be of catching it in your local supermarket?

Now I know it's not flu and can affect people both more severely and less severely but probably spread in the same way it looks like.

It's a totally valid point and it's heartbreaking. It's another time where these women will be put in an awful situation of a lose lose choice. They cannot drive public health decisions though that will suit everybody.

sonicbook · 13/07/2020 22:53

Are you actually comparing this to flu?

The infection rate is so low because everything has been shut.

Almost every public health official anticipates a rise when lockdown is eased and shops, gyms, pubs etc open up.

Why are people so intent on infection rates now when we are investing time and energy I trying to make sure that the infection rate stays low enough to control.

Apparently you can't read.

OP posts:
sonicbook · 13/07/2020 23:10

Again so angry and rude. Yes I can read.

Did you or did you not use the flu to discuss infection rates? Yes you did. No I would not be scared of catching the flu. Flu does not rip through the population the way covid does because of immunisations and prior immunity. I know what the flu is and have an idea about how I would react to it. I'm not frightened.

Covid does spread in similar ways to flu. Currently, because of all these measures we have in place we have it under control. It will not take much for it not to be under control. Then the rate rises etc etc. Then we're back up shit creek with closed schools and localised lockdowns ( at best)

Well then if you read then you can see that i was discussing the risk of catching is similar to that of catching flu not saying that it was the same as flu.

It doesn't matter how many more things are open. if 5 people from 94,000 have it, those people can't be everywhere spreading it. We have track and trace.

We need to concentrate on getting people back to normal and get the fear level appropriate to the risk. If cases rise then we increase the requirements. What we need is open and honest "adult" conversations. What ever happened to those?

OP posts:
sonicbook · 13/07/2020 23:30

5 that they know about. You're being deliberately obtuse. If it was a simple as you say then this wouldn't be a WORLDWIDE crisis. Asymptomatic cases are still not fully understood and neither are the so called 'super spreaders'

The arrogance of people is staggering. People, who I assume and please feel free to correct me, are not scientists, medical experts, behaviourists, etc stating with absolute certainty, even derision, that the experts are wrong and they know better.

I wish I had that confidence in myself.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 23:35

I don't have faith in the "experts" as they have continually contradicted themselves. Some of the experts haven't gone along with the guidance either.

I'm not being deliberately obtuse, it comes natural. Off to be bed now. nite.

With all due respect it's exhausting!

I can only assume you're a lawyer! Or my husband who also is never wrong!

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 23:47

Nah, not a lawyer. Brought up in poverty with no opportunity to go to Uni and where education wasn't necessarily valued. Work was and I've supported myself since I was 18, supported my family my whole life despite being redundant twice, was sole earner when DH was a stay at home parent, have been the main earner for the rest of the time. Currently putting two DC through Uni, have been working and paying into society for 38 years. Not always right but work in a risk environment so driven by logic more than emotion.

DS2 wanted to be a Judge when he was 2 going on 3. Changed his mind and now studying Politics instead.

Well if you ever get the chance you should go to uni... you'd probably love it. It's like a mumsnet thread that lasts for years 🤣 research, argue, research, argue - its joyful.

Very cute. My daughter wants to be a tik Tok influencer which is a bit HmmI can only hope she grows out of it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/07/2020 00:09

In my mid 50s now and been working full time since I was 16 going on 17 and part time since I was 13. Honestly all I want now is to retire once DC off my hands, no state pension until i'm 67 (so far), so would be a full 50 years if I don't go early. only had 10 months mat leave in total over both pregnancies. Looking forward to a rest.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/07/2020 00:14

DS2 would argue black was white at that age (no idea where he gets it from...) so on one of his rants to DH who'd told him he had to do something because it was the law, he demanded to know who made the law anyway... Dh said Judges as he didn't fancy a discussion about parliament and the lords and the queen. So that was that decided.

However, when a bit older, X -Factor was on tv and he kept looking at the tv and back at us, looking a mixture of angry and confused. When I asked what the matter was he said "Do you mean to tell me that Simon Cowell makes the law in this country!" We explained there is more than one type of Judge.

Tiktok influencer is going to be so last year before she gets old enough! :o

🤣 absolutely! Simon Cowell 🙈🤣 if you're so never does become a judge or politician he'll have a great story as to why!

I’m still not sure my dd has understood that being famous on YouTube etc isn’t the highest life goal you can have!

YonBonnieBanks · 14/07/2020 08:36

I don't agree with face masks made mandatory by any government.

My dad who is face mask exempt was challenged by another shopper "you're killing people"

My aunt (his sister) died of Covid 19. So he was really shaken and angry. Told the other shopper his sister had died, got told "all the more reason". He then listed all his health conditions and told her to piss off (she was right up in his face, not social distancing, and wearing a flimsy scarf that kept falling down to reveal her mouth).

As for me, why should I label myself? Disabled people are different. Oh look there's a disabled person. Which other country marked a group in society as being different.....oh yes.
