Facemasks in shops.

I mean really, what is the point now? If they were useful then the time when they were useful was months ago.

Surely the chance of catching covid in a shop is minute, the chance of then being ill is more minute and the chance of dying is vastly remote.

It just feels like it another thing to say just to keep control? I have no problem doing things that make sense and protect others, but really? Public transport where you may be in the vicinity of someone for longer seems fair enough but shops doesn't make sense.

IME so far, having a mask dangling from your neck without even being worn seems to give people carte blanche to stand less than a foot away from others.

It may keep people safe, but it will lose shops lots of business.

So for all BJ is saying get back to work to save the coffee shops, no one will GO to these coffee shops if they need to wear a mask to do so!

I'll be relying on packed lunches. DH will be doing the supermarket shop. all other shopping will be online.

Double edged sword for want of a better expression, save (some) lives but kill the retail and hospitality industry.

YonBonnieBanks · 13/07/2020 16:04

Oh and speaking of schools.....how many secondary school kids will remember their masks when they converge on greggs, subway, mcdonalds, tesco local, corner shop etc for their school lunches?

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 16:10

How many secondary school kids haven't been in close contact with a dozen other kids including having them in their house by the time school goes back?

I'm obviously equally as concerned for teachers as anyone else, but they are unlikely to be able to wear a mask to teach and DC should be asking questions etc so not ideal for them to be wearing either. Though i'll go back to the OP and again say that the risk is very very small for anyone.

Seems they think they havent quite killed off enough old people yet.

It would certainly be interesting to see how many who insist mask wearing protects the vulnerable and elderly would care about this.

That’s appalling helena what a terrible time to be refusing to take prescriptions over the phone. Let’s hope they backtrack!

Lidlfix · 13/07/2020 18:02

Can you link to NHS Scotland introducing that policy Helena? My COPD sufferer and high dosage steroid patient 75 year old DF would be someone who this would impact on significantly. I have to say his GP and associated community professionals have been amazing throughout. And I can set up digital repeat requests for him but I know that not all 70+ are in that position.

As a teacher, if it means we get more pupils in from the start I'll wear a mask. I have been wearing one since Friday and felt ok - I know that the supermarket run is nothing like teaching a lesson though. And I don't have any conditions which make wearing a mask a risk. I do have freakishly small ears which means they can ping off so any advice from other tiny eared people would be great. Not a child's though as I also blessed with a big round face.

I can be an awkward besom and would be more likely to get annoyed if I was not allowed to wear one. So I appreciate the arguments of those who don't want wearing masks to be mandatory.

Maybe better with a mask that ties or get one of the bands that you can put at the back of your head and hook the mask to instead. I have the opposite problem, quite a small face, I've tied the elastic in a knot near to the mask end and then looped it over my ears and it seems to be a better fit but not tried it out in the real world.

OP posts:
OOAOML · 13/07/2020 18:36

I prefer ties to ear loops as it's easier to adjust and works well with my hair which is usually in a ponytail or plait. I've seen earsaver patterns on hobbycraft which are basically buttons on a band of fabric and you attach the loops to that.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 18:41

@OOAOML, yes, that's what I was think of. There are also plastic ones that people have printed on a 3d printer.

I think a band will be the answer for me. Just been looking on Amazon as I can't crochet to save my life and my big shiny moon face is fortunately topped off with curls so the band will stay in place as it will get tangled in securely .

Is this about NHS England reviewing repeat prescriptions

I must have been in lockdown too long. I don't see the connection to COVID restrictions in this country

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 18:53

Maybe have a look on FB marketplace or ebay/etsy as loads of folk making them. I can crochet though haven't for years. if you don't find anything let me know and I'll see if I can find a pattern - and a crochet hook...

The son of a friends has been making the 3d printed versions so could possibly get you in touch with them.

Woman with hidden disabilities left in tears after being abused over parking in disabled space
One in five people in the UK suffer with some form of disability

A young woman has spoken out about the abuse she received from a stranger for parking in a disabled spot - because she 'didn't look disabled'.

Sophie Ann Thomas was left in tears after she was called 'disgusting' and accused of 'scamming the council' by a stranger who didn't believe she was disabled.

The 24-year old, who suffers from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and tendinitis in her hips, is one of the 70 per cent of disabled people whose condition is not visible.

She was walking back to her car at a car park in Horncastle, when a woman approached her and started taking pictures.

"I was with my mum and she nipped to the toilets while I got in the car," said Sophie.

"I could see the woman from afar shaking her head at me, but after my mum had gone to the toilet, she came over and started taking pictures
When my mum got back, I told her and my mum went over to the woman. I got out the car and went with her to talk to the woman.

"I tried to explain to her about my disabilities and that's when she called me disgusting.

I showed her my blue badge, but she wouldn't believe me. She just told me that I must have scammed the council."

Sophie's various conditions mean that she is often in pain and her tendinitis means her hips regularly 'lock' leaving her unable to walk or move.

She says often faces discrimination when she's out and about on her 'good days' as people assume she doesn't have a disability based on her outward appearance.

"I do get a lot of stares whenever I go out, said Sophie.

"Whether it's when I'm parking in a disabled spot or using the disabled toilets, because I don't 'look' disabled people immediately jump to conclusions."

It's estimated one in five people in the UK have a disability and seven out of ten of them have impairments which are not visible to the naked eye.

In August last year, the government's blue badge scheme was extended to support those with 'hidden disabilities'.

Under the new guidance, parking permits were extended to those with hidden disabilities, including people who cannot travel without risk of serious harm to their health and safety or someone else's, people who cannot travel without 'very considerable psychological distress', people who have very considerable difficulty when walking, meaning 'both the physical act and experience of walking'.

Sophie says it's the lack of public awareness surrounding hidden disabilities that leads to the abuse she has faced.
The woman who called me disgusted was shocked that I could walk, said Sophie.

"People have this misconception that disabled people should be in a wheelchair, locked away at home.

"I have good days. I go to work. I even sometimes look nice and wear make-up. But when I do these things, people look at me and judge me. It's like people believe disabled people shouldn't have a life."

Sophie says she wishes people could see her on her bad days, when she is unable to get out of bed or even lift her arms to wash her hair, so people could understand.

There are days when my mum has to wash my hair, because it hurts to lift my arms, said Sophie.

"There are days when my mum has to bring me food and drink to my room because I can barely sit up in bed.

"You have to jump through so many hoops to get a blue badge, it isn't just handed over.

"I think it's getting better. The younger generations are becoming more aware of disabilities. It's about raising the awareness."

Our local FB. coronavirus support page has several people making and selling in a range of designs

Not to any standard but as we only need face coverings rather than masks, they do the job

serialreturner · 13/07/2020 19:00

FFS. Just wear it. 😤

Lidlfix · 13/07/2020 19:01

I am/will people were just offering advice (which I requested) because of my freakishly small ears. Or could you not be bothered reading Confused?

Mascotte · 13/07/2020 19:01

Nice @serialreturner 🙄

Channel 4 news just hinted that us down South may get an announcement tomorrow.

AKissAndASmile · 13/07/2020 19:08

Jesus Christ, why do British and American people moan so much about mask-wearing? You don't see people in the Asian countries that have done so well during this pandemic moaning. And they wear their masks correctly as well, not hanging off the face or as an acquaintance bragged to me 'the bus driver asked where my mask was and I said "in my bag" 🙄'

HeIenaDove · 13/07/2020 19:09

@chrislilleyswig ive seen plenty of people saying the wearing of face masks helps the vulnerable and elderly. It doesnt help those groups to move prescriptions online. But................radio silence.

It makes me furious that people are happy to use them for emotional blackmail while not giving a shit the rest of the time.

Hope thats a bit clearer.

AKissAndASmile · 13/07/2020 19:10

Bozo is so incompetent that he has to hint or leak things to guage public opinion before he actually does it. So he can U turn as usual. Coward.

HeIenaDove · 13/07/2020 19:12

Their figures being lower may have something to do with the fact they wernt shoving untested elderly people from hospital into care homes.

Funny how thats been forgotten about

See what i mean about those groups only being cared about by some quarters when they can use them for emotional blackmail!

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 19:14

Well maybe if we already needed them for the pollution rather than being told to wear it after the horse has bolted. there is no evidence that people have been spreading it in the supermarkets whilst not wearing a mask. There have been 5 positive cases in my region since beg of June and none for weeks so....

Some of us have a lot of sympathy with the disabled and others that can't/don't want to wear them. If they had left large supermarkets out of it then that would help.

As mud

Your link was about NHS England recommending moving to online prescriptions. This thread is about COVID restrictions in this country.

Don't mind me though. You've clearly got some sort of agenda judging by your next post about a disabled parking bag

I'm not thread prefect though, I'll just scroll past your stuff Smile
