If you voted no in the independence referendum...

...is Brexit changing your mind?

I've seen a number of people on social media (including MN) saying that they voted No in 2014 but would say Yes, or are starting to come round to the idea, in a second indyref because of Brexit. Sometimes it's because of the loss of freedom of movement, sometimes it's because Scotland's Remain vote has been completely ignored (see also Irish border issue), sometimes just the way our MPs are treated in Westminster.

Often it's reluctant, which I can fully understand. Have you changed your mind, are you swithering? Might you be persuaded?

For probably unnecessary disclosure, I voted Yes, and will do again. I am not a member of any political party/group. I'm just curious.

Yes and yes here too.

The last polls I saw were over 50pc for independence if Boris Johnson became PM.

Calyx72 · 02/08/2019 07:26

The Tories found another 2 billion to spend on "preparing" for a no deal Brexit.

Scotland's previous no voters must be voting yes next time. Why on earth would anyone actually vote to be tied financially to that?

cdtaylornats · 02/08/2019 07:31

Because better tied into the UK than out of both with few prospects. The logic escapes me - lose 10% of our trade and throw away 60% more. Bah (little message for SNP sheep).

Ash39 · 02/08/2019 08:03

I voted no, and would probably still vote no, however I think we will eventually get Scottish independence...

I think it's just simply the wrong time. Brexit is so much of a shitstorm. The SNP are praying on people's Brexit insecurities just now.
Why not let the dust settle first.

Also Scottish independence does not equal " And therefore we will stay in the EU", which a lot of folk are presuming, and I believe SNP propaganda is having them believe.

I would need to see the process laid out on a time line, with absolute guarantees that Scotland would be allowed ( quickly, not a long drawn out 10+ year process!) to again membership to the EU before I would vote Yes.

They are two separate things entirely

luckygreeneyes · 02/08/2019 08:07

No. Still No. always No.

Calyx72 · 02/08/2019 08:31

Cdtaylornats - Scotland out of the UK has more 'prospects' than tied to the sinking, humiliating UK. Small country with huge resources. rUK will be looking to trade cheaply and easily with everyone after Brexit- are you seriously trying to postulate that they will stop buying Scotland's exports for spite?

And there's no need for the 'bah/SNP sheep comment. Really? Uncalled for.

Independence isn't just about the SNP you know. There are many for independence who can't wait to vote the SNP out. The point being, Scotland will get who Scotland votes for, after independence.

batvixen123 · 02/08/2019 08:35

Voted No in 2014. Very unsure now. I swing between thinking independence would be an even greater shit storm than Brexit and would open a huge awful can of worms about racism and feeling like I couldn't, in any conscience, push for us to stay tied to a UK going the way it's going.

If I saw a clear, shorter than 10 yr plan to get us back in the EU I would probably tip to YES.

cdtaylornats · 02/08/2019 08:41

Calyx72 - i keep hearing about these huge resources - what exacly are they

Oil? - is past peak and we are moving to a post-oil world.

Fish? - off to the EU it goes.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 02/08/2019 08:47

cdtalormats That is probably why the SNP has been ignoring the oil crash in Aberdeen and the thousands upon thousands of jobs lost there from the oil industry... they don’t want to draw attention to the fact that oil can no longer provide the income they tried to say it would last time.

OneOfOurOwn · 02/08/2019 08:50

I voted no. If we have brexit I will vote yes for independence if I get the chance again.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 02/08/2019 08:57

No and still no!

Scotland is a mess under the snp. BREXIT is a shambles, independence would be an even bigger mess.

Calyx72 · 02/08/2019 11:54

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economyoff_Scotland

Scotland has a lot of natural resources including renewable energy and so on.

I'm at work and Wikipedia came up first when I googled

Scotland has as much or more resources as any other similar sized country. There is no good reason for us not to self manage/be independent.

(I firmly believe the reason we aren't to be allowed a second referendum is that the Westminster powers that be can not let Scotland's resources go. If they did they would not be able to afford Brexit (well they can't anyway of course but ykwim)
Why else would they be so adamant about keeping Scotland? It's not love it's money.)

Scotland if it votes to re-enter the EU or votes to do something like EFTA or an alliance with other northern countries or anything else - will be voting for what's best for Scotland. Scots will have a voice and a choice which we don't have now.

I won't change minds here but thought I would answer anyway Wink

MorrisZapp · 02/08/2019 12:06

No then and no now. I don't understand breaking up with our nearest neighbours because we don't want to break up with our overseas neighbours. I voted remain btw and don't support brexit but here we are.

Also I think an independent Scotland will be more woke, and womens rights will be erased in favour of queer theory/gender identity bollocks.

Calyx72 · 02/08/2019 12:20

We're not 'breaking up' though. We're taking charge of our own finances and government and will be stronger friends and allies.

MorrisZapp · 02/08/2019 13:07

Why can't we be strong friends and allies with the EU then, after voting to leave them?

DragonNoodleCake · 02/08/2019 13:18

@MintChocAddict YES!! What you said!
And all those of you that also recognise the horrific useless behaviour of the SNP and their divisive tactics whilst ignoring the real issues here.
As someone who was born in the north of England bit lived more of my life in Scotland- I have never seen more nonsense division than now.

Calyx72 · 02/08/2019 13:39

Because tied to rUK we won't be strong anything. Our money will be given to corporations in tax cuts and spent on no deal preparations instead of on Scotland's people and Scotland's priorities.

It's not a consenting Union is it?

The SNP are voted in on an independence mandate and polls show half Scotland's people want independence at this point.

Half don't (yet) which is why I think discussion and debate is important.

reginafelangee · 02/08/2019 13:45

I voted no and would still vote no.

I am even more strongly no because of Brexit. Look at what a mess there is trying to negotiate Brexit and then imagine trying to negotiate the break up of a 300 plus year union.

And imagine a hard border at Carlisle and Berwick.

That's before we even consider that they promised to pay for everything with Scottish oil which has absolutely tanked in value since then and there is still no plan for currency.

My social media is different to yours. All those I know voted no are still no. A few yes voting friends have switched to no because they were leave voters and don't want an independent Scotland that would try to take us back into the EU.

But outside the microcosm of social media news feeds the opinion polls are not budging. It is still fairly solidly 55% No and 45% Yes.

cdtaylornats · 02/08/2019 14:27

All the military shipbuilding on the Clyde gone, The 20,000 jobs Rosyth supports gone. The air-traffic control centre at Prestwick down to Scottish Domestic flights only.

Needing to set up a central bank, a supreme court, an aviation regulator, a merchant navy regulator, a vehicle licensing agency - it would take forever - it's taken 3 years to fail to set up social security processing, 5 years to fail to get CAP payments to farmers.

I could imagine the hard border being at the central belt with the counties south of that telling Holyrood to fuck off.

I'd give it 3 years before independence is called off and Sturgeon and her cronies end up like Mussolini

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 02/08/2019 14:36

Having just moved back home from London I am agog at the amazing changes that have happened to my city - a city that has its own economic micro climate that had its very own recession in 2014 with plenty job losses and catastrophic personal consequences for many.

HOWEVER I would say that the Government’s cash injections to the City has transformed the place for the better. Public services are just better. Green spaces are cleaner. Playparks are modern and clean. Money is being spent on artistic and cultural initiatives that are making the (grey) city a bright and attractive place.

If I had lived in Scotland first time round I’d have voted no - I’d have been vindicated by the subsequent oil price crash showing how relying on precious and volatile resources can mess things up.

It is highly likely it was also cash injections from Europe funding the devolved administration and allowing the Scottish Government to financially prop the City up in its hour of real news.

This is why in light of Brexit and the widening gulf between Scottish identity and the identity of the UK as a whole i would vote Yes this time.

fraserofallander.org/scottish-economy/gdp-per-capita-the-importance-of-oil-and-are-scots-actually-better-off/

Oil and gas is significant but not doing Scotland any good, rather "UK" which interestingly doesn't mean Scotland here

reginafelangee · 02/08/2019 16:36

It's not a consenting Union is it?

Of course its a consenting union. 55% voted to stay in the Union less than 4 years ago - in the 'once in a lifetime' referendum.

Calyx72 · 02/08/2019 20:18

Hmmmm yes that totally means that a material change such as Brexit should have no effect, that people should never ever be allowed to change their minds

Not Hmm
