So results day is here and I knew it would happen but in just over 3 weeks Dd will be moving to Dundee.

Thought I would start a thread to get us through those moments that we as parents find hard.

I hope she gets the accommodation thing sorted - I'm sure she will Smile. Talk about jumping in at the deep end! Shock

Superjaggy · 03/09/2018 22:20

Groovee hope your DD gets her accom sorted out quickly.

I've heard nothing more from DS but I took him to pay his rent on Sat so at least I know he won't get chucked out of his flat! His student loan was due in today so I'm guessing he's currently on a massive bender carefully planning how much money he has per week until the next instalment

Groovee · 04/09/2018 06:09

The manager went to the wrong room 🙈🤦🏻‍♀️ she arrived back later as one of her flatmate's key was broken! So all that drama for nothing!

Superjaggy · 04/09/2018 19:32

Thank goodness for that Groovee.

I had a text from DS... at 2:21am. He's been politely reminded that I love to hear from him, but during normal waking hours is preferable 🙄

Groovee · 04/09/2018 19:42

Dd is delighted it's been sunny!

prettybird · 04/09/2018 21:24

Mentioned your post to dh superjaggy Smile

His comment was that you need to be sure to have defined whose waking hours Wink Midday to 3am may well be your ds' "normal" waking hours Grin

Got a message from ds, saying that "btw you are a good driver". Asked him where that came from - and he said his new flat mate's twin brother (who only starts Uni next week) drove them into town and it was a bit "heart in the mouth" Shock

He also said that the tin of chocolate chip cookies that I made for him is going down well with his flat mates. Smile He says he hasn't got out the container of tablet yet.

Today was a good day for communication Wink

haggisaggis · 04/09/2018 22:25

Yep - ds had a “quiet night in” last night - which translates to drinking with flat mates until 2 am! Nightclub tonight...

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/09/2018 22:53

Laughing at all these drinking tales. Which is easy to do since DS is at home and hasn't been to uni yet.

I was chatting with my SIL who was telling the tale of when my nephew started at Uni 22 years ago aged 17. He rocked up to the Union with his new flat mates only to find a board behind the bar with lots of photos on it. On closer inspection it was revealed that it was photos of all the 17 year olds so they didn't inadvertently get served.. :o

He got round it reasonably easily by turning up in a group and finding a quiet corner and his flatmates buying the rounds :)

Darling bloody child forgot to take his gum shield up to Aberdeen Angry. Realised this as he was going out to the rugby trials Sad. No time to go to Tesco or Sainsbury's for a cheap "mould in boiling water" gum shield. Hmm

Dh said he was just going to go without a gumshield Hmm

It's now been posted 1st class.

Sturmundcalm · 07/09/2018 07:08

1 sleep to go for us. I think Glasgow Uni halls are today though? Good luck to anyone getting organised for this weekend! DD went out last night so think final packing may be a bit of a struggle for her Grin

weegiemum · 07/09/2018 09:19

Yes Glasgow is today/tomorrow. Dd starts freshers week on Monday, registration is on Tuesday. She's not part of Glasgow uni freshers as the art school has its own stuff organised all week, all very arty (who else has life drawing as part of freshers week!). She's been cooking for us all week as she doesn't plan on being here at teatime all of next week! Good choice, her paella on Wednesday was superb!

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/09/2018 09:28

DS has a couple of induction events and a meeting with someone on Wednesday and Thursday but otherwise no plans. I don't think he's really looked at the Freshers stuff as he is too shy and wouldn't go alone (or probably with anyone either). I'm trying not to make him any more anxious or to feel like he is missing out. :(

wigglybeezer · 07/09/2018 09:49

Yes, last bits of laundry and packing here. Tea out with Grandparents last night was nice, lunch with my Dad was a bit meh, he didn't even wish DS2 good luck, just said bye to all of us, turned round and walked off! He takes being unsentimental a bit too far sometimes ( see also weddings, pregnancy announcements etc.)
I think we have all the admin sorted ...we've had issues with getting a student bank account due to being 17 but he's fine with his young person's account for the time being. Going to try to squeeze in a haircut today.
Went to see Mama Mia II with some other mums of students the other night, there was quite a bit of sniffling but generally I am fine at the moment, I know it will hit me next week and I'll have to keep busy.
His DSA equipment hasn't arrived yet but he won't really need it for a week anyway so that's fine, I was hoping they'd get him a new laptop but they have deemed his old one adequate for the time being but it is getting slow...

prettybird · 07/09/2018 10:44

I also came across the "17 year old" problem when I looked into student accounts too wigglybeezer. Hmm

But given that he turns 18 next week, I told ds that it meant he could check out which banks looked convenient and/or his friends felt had offered a good deal and then change/set up an account. I think he's going to go with HSBC for its Amazon £80 credit and Student Prime.

He already has a debit card with Bos/Halifax account, which is the one his SAAS has been paid into. He's got more money in his account than we do! GrinShock

weegiemum · 07/09/2018 10:53

I was a 17 year old fresher. Back then my matrix card had "MINOR" stamped on it in red ink, which meant I couldn't get into any of the unions (Edinburgh) after 7pm. I got good at eating there and so being in, or knowing the good pubs!

I was down to the card people first thing on the January start date (was 18 during the Christmas holiday )

wigglybeezer · 07/09/2018 12:35

Unfortunately you have to turn 18 within 2 months of starting your course with DS2s bank ( which he doesn't) or have a different account for at least 12 months which he also doesn't but he will next summer... Bank accounts were a right hassle, the combination of his passport having expired and being 17 meant he could only go with one building societies teen account, it took several appts with various banks to find this out and was highly aggravating. The Nationwide were the only ones who were helpful and had enough staff in branch to sort it out! It must regularly cause problems for Scottish students.

prettybird · 07/09/2018 13:00

Indeed Hmm

...and that's with kids starting after S6 Shock. God help the ones starting after S5 Confused

Groovee · 07/09/2018 16:10

Dd is home as we have a wedding tomorrow.

She's absolutely knackered and admitted she's been dreadfully homesick. Feel like such a shit mum. One of the girls she's sharing with has been really bad too. So they've been supporting each other.

Good luck to everyone making the move this weekend x

OP posts:
wigglybeezer · 07/09/2018 18:55

Laundry finished, will pack after tea of DS2S favourites. His older brother has gone out with no agreed return time, I don't think he's enjoying eveyone making a fuss of " golden boy". Will try and head off early due to StAndrews parking but will probably toss and turn tonight.

Sturmundcalm · 07/09/2018 20:37

DD has 2 boxes, 1 suitcase and 9 bags to get transported tomorrow... will see how it goes! she's in the hall that is separate from all the rest which for tomorrow at least will probably be a good thing.

1nutcracker · 07/09/2018 22:47

Wigglybeezer
We'll be there tomorrow too. What accommodation is your DS in?

prettybird · 07/09/2018 22:59

I have very happy memories of John Burnett Hall Smile

Even 40 years later (minus 1 month Wink), I can still remember the wave of panic that hit when we went through Guardbridge and I say was the signpost that said St Andrews 4 1/4 miles Shock

My other recollection once we got to the Hall was how much of a rabbit warren the place seemed to be and wondering if I would ever find my way around! Grin

wigglybeezer · 08/09/2018 07:14

1nutcracker, DS is in St Salvators, where's your DS? I think we'll hang around until the afternoon, go to the beach etc. and then get lost, not going to bother with the parents reception on Sunday!

1nutcracker · 08/09/2018 08:24

He's in Agnes Blackadder. We have a flat in East Neuk, so we'll stay for weekend, although we wont see him after drop off this morning. We have been warned😂
