Snow - never seen anything like it

At least a foot here in Glasgow, have never seen anything like it in the 11 years we've lived here.

Thinking back to my childhood in the east of Scotland I remember snow, but nothing this bad.

How long is it all going to take to thaw???

Dh went out and cleared the cat's usual path, even clearing the hole under the fence that she has made. By my reckoning she hadn't had a pee in about 48 hours! we threw her out and she went under a bush and straight back in. Today I threw her out and she went straight round, under the fence and was about to come back in but did a quick standing pee in the snow. Then tonight she actually wanted to go out and did exactly the same - normal service has been resumed... :o

Just wanted to show you Scots this from Wales.

LtGreggs · 03/03/2018 11:00

I hope whoever made the footprints up it it not stuck underneath it!

DowntonCrabby · 03/03/2018 11:24

NE Scotland here too, I remember the 2010 snow that lasted into March. It stopped snowing about 3 weeks before it had all thawed away! It was bitterly cold.
I quite often took the sledge along to school
to pick up my DD.
We're going to make the most of this weekend as DS is 5 and never really seen proper snow to play/sledge in unless we've been visiting family further north.

BakedBeans47 · 03/03/2018 15:33

I hate it. Our boiler has broken (and it’s not the condensate pipe) so doubly miserable. Sick of the sight of my kids too lol. My parents are in their 70s and said they’ve never seen snow as bad. I will be skipping to the office with joy on Monday morning (I hope!)

k2p2k2tog · 03/03/2018 16:37

Touch wood, things are on the up. We still haven't seen a gritter or snowplough in Bearsden but yesterday afternoon and again this morning all of the neighbours were out clearing the snow and we can now get in and out of the street again.

Are we all back to school tomorrow? I was about to brave my first drive in days but it’s snowing persistently here now.

Readermumof3 · 04/03/2018 11:05

Bloody hope not. Our council is doing a grand job in emotional blackmail by rallying the parents to clear paths at their local school. Many have taken this as a given that the schools are open although no one seems to have stopped to think that perhaps the bloody staff still can't get out their own streets never mind try driving 15 miles.

k2p2k2tog · 04/03/2018 11:09

Our COuncil too - putting out appeals for people to help clear access to school. Some have responded, but many are knackered after spending ALL Friday and ALL Saturday clearing streets and pavements with fuck all sign of a gritter or snowplough.

I know the weather is exceptional, and I know the Council has been stretched, but remind me again what we're paying Council Tax for?

I have no school kids but I saw a few posts on facebook about clearing playgrounds today the council has also been sharing these posts Hmm tbf parents need their Dc at school so this is probably a rally round to restore normality and sanity

MsHomeSlice · 04/03/2018 11:20

it's weird here!

Spent the week in Edinburgh...lots and lots falling, and on the ground, but we got home (up past Dundee) yesterday, expecting "The Day After Tomorrow" scenarios, but there is not that much here, whereas all the way to Perth it was more or less deep and crisp and even, drifts, snowy trees, snow plough evidence and snow blowers on some of the slip roads
Most of the fields here look like a heavy frost rather than snow, it seems to have all fallen on the roads in two or three key points which have caused abject chaos and massive massive drifts

We got back to the house via a trial and error of random country roads, the ones usually blocked are okay, the ones usually fine are at least knee (and even waist) deep in places

DD made it out to Dundee yesterday in her tiny car, and DH is out to panic buy milk and bread already today.

We had much much more everywhere in 2010 and our washing machine froze up, it's in an outhouse, AND the LPG for the gas hob froze ...it was a much more prolonged cold snap throughout December

The amount on the roads seems completely incompatible with the amount elsewhere!

Garmadonsmum · 04/03/2018 11:20

I live near some elderly people council properties and their paths have been cleared and gritted each day, except the red warning day. And have seen a snow plough on our street, but then obviously it snows again on top. Agree re schools most teachers will live much further away from work (and at secondary, they need to really) than the pupils do. But I think there’s be public outrage if still shut so likely to make heroic efforts today to get them open.
Going to a supermarket now.. so will not be on mumsnet for a loonng time!

Lucked · 04/03/2018 11:21

I am in Lanarkshire, live in South and work in North. Where I live they have done a great job with the main roads and lots of pavements too, no residential or side streets but I am pretty impressed. The schools are in residential streets so I don’t know what they will be like, hopefully they did them too but they didn’t last time which is madness.

North Lanarkshire didn’t seem to have done as much as if Friday when I left work.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/03/2018 11:42

People are randomly clearing drives and bits of road in my street (dead end). imo it's a bit stupid as the snow is better to drive on than the random icy clear bits. We had a nice steady melt going on, there are no grit bins in the entire estate (nearest bin is 3 miles away and council have said they've made a temporary salt dump 2 miles away) to grit the bits they've cleared.

Lightly snowing again but more expected tomorrow. Haven't heard about schools yet but main roads are clear and it's high school I need open so playground not so much of an issue as long as road/path/car park are clear.

MrsJayy · 04/03/2018 12:03

Me and he are just talking about that wax there is random cleared bits of road /pavement up and down our street but no grit on it so doesn't really help, I think folk àre bored and trying to do something

k2p2k2tog · 04/03/2018 12:06

And it's snowing again. Sigh.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 04/03/2018 12:07

I think it's the drifting that makes the roads so bad?

Was expecting rain all day today but it's be properly snowing for a couple of hours Confused

Justaboy · 04/03/2018 12:12

When i were a lad waay back in 1963 we had snow that deep that in some county lanes you could walk in the snow and at the same time stand on the top of telephone poles as it was that deep in parts of east anglia.

Mind you differing mindset in those days a very strong we can cope attuide was around and i only missed Two days off school and that was becase the local bus depot had run out of diesel, they never turned the engines off!

stargirl1701 · 04/03/2018 12:19

2010 was worse for us in Perthshire. This hasn't been too bad.

Snow - never seen anything like it
MoreProsecco · 04/03/2018 12:42

It was snowing here earlier (Edinburgh) but it's now turning to rain. Hoping it doesn't freeze overnight & make conditions treacherous.

Need to get back to work tomorrow. DP went to the school earlier & cleated the ground, along with lots of other parents desperate to get kids back to school.

Darkbendis · 04/03/2018 15:18

Apparently the schools and nurseries in Glasgow will be open tomorrow. DS cannot wait, DD not that sure about it, DH totally eager to see them out of the house for a few hours (he's been on annual leave and he's got a few more days left and he has PLANS, all the things he wanted to do and couldn't Wink )

... has the whole country run out of milk and bread? If I believe what people write on FB, it looks like people stocked up like Snowmaggedon will go on and on and the shops are empty.

Garmadonsmum · 04/03/2018 15:27

Dark I was in a very large supermarket earlier and while there was plenty of bread, there was not a single pint of milk.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/03/2018 15:27

We are back tomorrow too. Limited school meals and we've to all take care on the roads though :)

DH nipped out and got real milk today. We have enough food in to do until mid week (without resorting to plain pasta and sauce) so I'll leave any further shopping until then.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/03/2018 15:28

There was no milk yesterday but clearly deliveries at some point. Dh said it was going fast when he popped in while out looking for a sunday paper.

Darkbendis · 04/03/2018 15:56

Thanks, Garmadonsmum I was just wondering. We've got all we need for a good few days so not worried (did our weekly shop yesterday ).
