Snow - never seen anything like it

At least a foot here in Glasgow, have never seen anything like it in the 11 years we've lived here.

Thinking back to my childhood in the east of Scotland I remember snow, but nothing this bad.

How long is it all going to take to thaw???

South side of Glasgow. Haven't measured but think the snowfall is over 12" judging by the "caps" on tables and pots in the garden.

I can't remember it snowing like this and it isn't halting but it is meant to rain on Sunday so hopefully it will wash away.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 01/03/2018 21:36

I'm in North Lanarkshire 1st pic was this morning & it's got worse since then, and the 2nd pic was a lull this afternoon.

It's still blowing a blizzard so I'm wondering how much worse it'll be in the morning.

We're near Stirling - about 40cm I reckon, and still snowing. I think it's deeper than 2010 but not nearly so cold (that lot started early Dec, not March?) so think it might disappear fairly quickly once we get some rain? Here's hoping...

RebootYourEngine · 01/03/2018 21:43

It is fine where i live in NE Scotland however further out it is quite bad.

MrsJayy · 01/03/2018 21:51

I am in Stirling too it is so deep my Dds car is almost buried

Appin · 01/03/2018 21:57

We have about sixteen inches here. It's been relentless - cleared, built up, cleared, built up. Drifting. A snow plough went along our street first thing this morning, by lunchtime you couldn't tell.

We've pulled a sledge to the shops, got some supplies, and are slowly going stir crazy. Too cold to play out for DC, and it's very soft snow, not great for snowmen and too deep for sledging- they just sink!

It's going to take a long time to clear, just hoping we don't flood when it melts!

Garmadonsmum · 01/03/2018 21:58

8misskitty what was the point of you being in a random school with no pupils? You could have got more done at home with a computer!

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/03/2018 22:02

Still falling thick and fast and blowin' a hoolie at the same time :(

MyNameIsNotSteven · 01/03/2018 22:04

We had nice thick snow like that back in December but this stuff is shit. It's powdery, horizontal and the wind is blowing so hard it isn't settling in rooftops. God knows where it's ending up. Heavy snow forecast all night.

OldTimeStringBand · 01/03/2018 23:27

Is anyone else as baffled by the amount of skis, snowboards and general snow gear on display as I am?

It's really making me laugh. The Lidl aisle of crap saves the day!

8misskitty8 · 02/03/2018 00:12

garmadonsmum haven’t a clue. It was what the chief executive asked all council staff to do. If you don’t do it you will not be paid !
Some of my colleagues went to their local school, just sat there doing nothing until the call came that staff were to go home at 10am

I went to my own school as I am one of the few staff members in walking distance.
I actually can’t do anything from home as we are not allowed to take anything home that has pupil details. So no printing of photos or tracking allowed. Anyway the council sever can’t be accessed from home so nothing computer based could be done.

k2p2k2tog · 02/03/2018 09:17

It's not getting any better. More snow overnight, it's drifting really badly and the Council have posted on social media that they're having to draft in heavy plant as the drifts are too high for the snowploughs to cope with. Starting to reassess plans for Sunday as I can't see our road being passable by then.

NE Scotland here too and yes, 2010/2011 was far worse for us. It started in Nov 2010 and continued through to the following March. The worst of it was Nov-Dec but we had a 9 month period from Sept 2010 - May 2011 with snow every month, albeit very little in Apr & May.

In Nov 2010 we didn't leave the house for 2 1/2 weeks and we lived in a town. The smaller villages were completely cut off, but 2 weeks off school for a town-centre school was unheard of. The snow was over our ground floor windows and when we put our 3 year old out in the back garden - it went up to her chest height.

Groovee · 02/03/2018 10:20

It cold here today!

HuckfromScandal · 02/03/2018 10:24

I’m in perth
This is the worst it’s been since 2010.
First times schools have been shut since then too!
It’s bloody cold, the wind is bitter.

WickedGoodDoge · 02/03/2018 12:28

I went out this morning to Sainsbury’s. We’d dug out our cul de sac yesterday so it was fine even with the overnight snow but the rest of the estate hadn’t been touched. I bought a new(ish) Tiguan just before Christmas. This was the first time I’d ever had an opinion on a car and even DH was very impressed by my choice today. Grin She is fantastic in the snow and I don’t think I’ll ever go non 4WD again.

I think we got about a foot which is the first decent snowfall we’ve had since 2010. Am from New England so it takes an awful lot to truly impress me. Grin

OldTimeStringBand · 02/03/2018 13:59

2010 definitely wasn't as bad for us, but we lived city centre with no kids then.

People are starting to venture out but the shops are bare! DH reckons there is more snow on the way as the sky looks very heavy, I really hope he's wrong. Cabin fever now starting to set in.

Our neighbours went out and cleared the snow in the street but underneath the snow was a 1 inch layer of sheet ice... Good intentions.... eeeeek.

ItsNachoCheese · 02/03/2018 14:09

Day 3 of house arrest chez nacho in alloa began on wednesday and tensions are now running high between me ds (2) and ddog Grin over a foot of snow in my garden Shock its up to ddogs neck and hes quite tall.

MrsJayy · 02/03/2018 15:04

My dog dug a hole so he could do the toilet i thought that was genuis then realised I had been watching him dig a poophole and i need out the house Grin

Readermumof3 · 02/03/2018 20:17

These should be the back garden stairs, this morning (Fife) Hmm

Snow - never seen anything like it

Also had to reinstate the cat litter tray as madam won't venture further than the door mat. Thank God we still had a bag of litter stashed away. She's not used a tray in about 18mths 🙈
