Eek it's only 18 days away!

Dd is convinced Nat5 maths will be another C. She's not too stressed about the highers results.

How's everyone else feeling about it?

Brillo my sis failed her highers in S5 and resat them in S6 gaining a few Cs. She's now a qualified careers adviser advising kids just like yours on today's exam results helpline. Please ask your DD to phone for reassurance (it's free) and tell her to search the hashtag #nowrongpath

Hugs to all

prettybird · 08/08/2017 14:45

Brillo's dd was sitting her Nat 5s iirc, so I think she's got time to "remedy" her Highers - especially as she's doing S5 in a much better school.

But it's understandably still disappointing for her and she'll take it out on her nearest and dearest speaking as someone who has just had her head snapped off by her ds Wink

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/08/2017 14:48

Yes, it was Nat5's so Highers in much better school and we're moving nearer as soon as we can so new start.
I think she'll be much happier in Glasgow.

Groovee · 08/08/2017 14:55

I'm already dreading next year! Dd will be awaiting UCAS updating and Ds gets his Nat5's!

Dd has just found her email in the junk box!

I'm going on holiday next year, on my own! preferably somewhere warm with young hot men to cater to my every need

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/08/2017 15:04

pb DS also got a B in Maths and also in Physics. both results a bit surprising. I think we'll need to see how close he was too. He got As in his Computing, Engineering and Graph Comm. He want's to do either something related to Computing or Engineering so I'm not sure if it matters too much but I think 4 As would be a better insurance policy.

He's doing AH Physics, Maths and Computing so maybe not the best in terms of the way the results have fallen.

DS2s just goes from bad to worse. The Maths doesn't fit well into the columns, he's also not sure he wants to do H English or BM but really has nothing to replace any of them with... so far that leaves him doing H Mod Stud, Nat5/H Music (not sure which yet), resitting Nat 5 Maths and if he doesn't do BM or English then the rest of timetable is empty and there is nothing other than History that he wants to do. He can't do History as it clashes with Music Confused.

SwiftAnchor · 08/08/2017 15:49

After DD being ok with her results this morning, she has now decided she is unhappy with her C. She had an A in her prelims and apparently had As all through the year in class work and test. I've told her to speak to the teacher next week once she is back.

I'm not really sure how appeals/remarking etc works?!

Sorry to hear there's some unhappy people today. It's a difficult day I think, a lot of pressure and emotions.

WineGin all round!! Smile

LordPercy · 08/08/2017 15:57

They just remark the exam paper. We needed a remark for history two years ago and the school also put in a remark for French, both of which he got. Even if he didn't get the remark for history, the school were still prepared to let him do Higher since during the 2 year N5 course he'd never had less than an A for anything and also had an A in the prelim. Sadly the days of appealing on prelim exam marks have gone.

dotdotdotmustdash · 08/08/2017 16:39

He can't do History as it clashes with Music confused.

My Dd had a clash in 6th with AH Music and another AH subject but since she was having music lessons outside school for her main instrument she decided to have a go without a class to attend. If your Dh learns music outside of school then he might be able to do the same with the Higher, even if he just makes sure he gets the handouts from the music teacher. There are plenty of SQA music resources online. Dd got an A in the AH.

prettybird · 08/08/2017 16:40

That's what I thought: the assignment doesn't get re-marked (despite, for example, the inexplicable variations in supposed quality of essentially the same assignments last year in Chemistry) SadConfused So last year he only got one extra mark from the re-mark (of his exam paper) but he needed 2 to change from a B to an A.

For AH Physics this year, we'll get his cousin (a head of physics at another school) to "double mark" his assignment so that he doesn't get lulled into a false sense of security.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/08/2017 16:55

I don't think that would work I'm afraid dotdot . he didn't do nat 5 Music so hence we are still not sure what he will be doing. he's only been taking lessons since Christmas (in the Bass guitar) it's hard to find tutors and I'm not that impressed with the one he has. He's (DS2) just bought himself a guitar as well to do for his 2nd instrument but hasn't started to learn yet. I think he'll need the classes. the reason we chose Music rather than the History is that if he only does nat 5 this year he can still do Higher in S6.

weegiemum · 08/08/2017 17:00

Dd2 got a B in nat 5 music.

She sat it at the end of S2, age 13, so I'm ridiculously proud of her. Means she can do higher in S3.

weegiemum · 08/08/2017 17:02

@wigglybeezer I think dd1 will do a Portfolio course after leaving school next year. Hoping she can still do AH art. Other option was English, where she got an A, but Art is her passion.

Imgettingdesparatehere · 08/08/2017 17:07

A very mixed bag of results here DS2 got 2Cs & a fail for his advanced highers. His text to me at work was well I got accepted for uni months ago. I will try not to show it too much but I am rather annoyed that he has basically squandered this year. DS3 got 6As at Nat 5 (LA will only allow 6 maximum). So rather muted celebrations tonight.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/08/2017 17:36

Oh and DSs text still hasn't arrived although the email came into his spam folder at back of 1. I think they'll have to review for next year, that's really not good.

Figleaf · 08/08/2017 19:00

Thankfully my DS2 doesn't need a remark/appeal (but would like to know how close to an A he came in his Nat 5 Music today as he already has a Grade 4 which I'm told is = to a Higher). If we did think an appeal was in order the new fee based system is totally unfair. Schools can not afford to pay up if the remark doesn't bear fruit so unless the error is massive our school say they just won't try. I wrote to The first Minister/Education Minister/all my MSPs when the new system was introduced and pointed out the stats differential between state and private schools were screaming about the inequality but the F.M/Ed sec wrote back saying they couldn't comment on individual cases. Evidently they both assumed I was moaning about a result I didn't like for my own child. It wasn't until I pointed out my oldest got 5 As at Higher and I was complaining on principal that I got a half decent answer - not good at all!

prettybird · 08/08/2017 19:09

I agree about the cost of appeals. I offered to pay for ds' re-mark last year for Chemistry but even though his result stayed the same (moved from 2 marks from an A to 1 mark from an A Hmm), they never asked me for anything.

I can afford it - not everyone can Sad

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/08/2017 19:10

I'm now thinking that I need to see how close DS1s Bs were to As as when I've looked at the courses he'd probably be looking to apply to, 4As seems to be what he needs.

You would think that someone who scored 98% in Maths at Nat 5 should have got an A at Higher no? Plus he was only one mark off a Band 1 A in physics too at Nat 5.

Sturmundcalm · 08/08/2017 19:42

DD got her 6 As at Higher - so she's both pleased and relieved (she has BIG ambitions). most of her friends seem to be happy, and most have got their predicted marks. think she may consider dropping her crash higher subject for next year and just concentrate on the 3 Adv Highers, will see how that discussion goes on Thursday with the school. And don't know whether it's coincidence but surname starts with an A and she had her text at 8 on the dot!

Groovee · 08/08/2017 19:46

@Sturmundcalm we star with C and it was here at 8am

SewIntoYou · 08/08/2017 19:54

Congratulations to everyone.

SQA fecking up the results is a bit of a rite of passage, no? Remember the year they got them all muddled up?

readsalotgirl63 · 08/08/2017 19:56

DD got what she needed for her conditional place - so off to Glasgow. Very relieved and so happy for her. It has been a stressful few days. Congrats to those who have done well and commiserations to those who are disappointed.
Last year dd got a B in H Philosophy which she'd crashed due to an appalling mark on the assignment - we were not happy with the guidance the school had provided and they submitted for a remark - the result was no change of mark and dd was pretty disappointed and felt her chances of getting into the course she wanted were reduced. However it did mean she was very motivated in S6 and has got the results she wanted. It may seem as if all is lost - but it rarely is - but it is hard to tell youngsters that when they're in the midst of it all. Hope all goes well for everyone's dc in the next year.
Good l

readsalotgirl63 · 08/08/2017 19:58

Sorry - that should have ended with good luck !

Figleaf · 08/08/2017 20:09

Prettybird - its shocking. Since the new appeal fee was brought in, state school appeals have fallen by 77% yet private school appeals fell by only 36%. Successful appeals in some subjects (notably English or History) have been reported at 50% and in all subjects at 27%. As a parent in the state sector I am forced to draw the conclusion that these SQA Appeal charges put private school children at a great advantage to mine and other state school pupils. In my school, due to a budget squeeze, you have to be 2 grades off predicted before they will even consider an appeal. My son has just got 6 As and a B rather than the 7 he was predicted but there will be no chance of an appeal at St Modan's unless he'd got a C or failed at Nat 5. My neighbour has a child at Dollar and tells me they can just request a remark and the school puts one in. The difference is the cost is just passed on to the fee paying parents over there but in the state sector the school is forbidden from doing the same. I just hope and pray my DS can get through next year without me having to go into bat to get him anysort of post exam service. Waxon - our e-mail didn't come until 1 either but the text came in 8a.m sharp.
