Getting increasingly annoyed by Scots who pronounce "ch" as "ck"

Yes, I know...in the grand scheme of things it's trivial.

But, it's intensely irritating to hear Scottish born and bred people talk about Auckterarder or Lock Lomond.

Just stop it! You're Scottish and you can say the "ch" sound!

Danyellasdonkey, it's worse when it's written as "use"! Wink

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2016 18:35

Fin-ochty?

So a silent D?

I think the locals of Kilconquhar in Fife pronounce it Kin-Ocher.

Dare I throw "Menzie" the surname into the mix?

It's one of our family names and traditionally should be pronounced Ming-is.

However, when Dundonians refer to Menzieshill they always say Meenis -hill"

Drives me mad!

I'm not even going to mention people who pronounce the name as "Menz-eez"...

Finechty. I was told Kilconquhar should be pronounced Kinacher, but that's a tiny difference.

I also hate the "yous" that is creeping in everywhere. Even worse when it's written as "you's

I'm increasingly seeing Use - as in "use ur lukin braw btw" Shock Confused Hmm

What about Colquhoun? Grin

Gaelic is most definitely not taught in schools - unless you're in one of the Gaelic Medium schools. It was never the main language in the Central Belt anyway. There's probably a stronger link there to Lallans/Old Scots.

There are some who've taken offence at the requirement in Curriculum for Excellence English for a Scottish author in one of the literature questions. I'm actually quite glad that ds has been exposed to Scottish writing.

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2016 20:06

I'd say it as "Cu-hoon"

Colquhoun = Kahoon

I'll save the political debate re Gaelic and Scottish literature for elsewhere... :)

It's pronounced "Culto-Why"!

Wrotham? Hmm... I'm going to guess "Roe-am"?

The "qu" in Scots is a "Wh" sound. Mad!

I'd say the same as Salmotrutta - with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable. **

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2016 20:26

Root-em.. I like it Grin

Here's a joke a pupil once told me (only works in Broad Scots)

Q: What do you do if you find a trumpet growing in your garden?

A:- "Root-i-Toot"
