Getting increasingly annoyed by Scots who pronounce "ch" as "ck"

Yes, I know...in the grand scheme of things it's trivial.

But, it's intensely irritating to hear Scottish born and bred people talk about Auckterarder or Lock Lomond.

Just stop it! You're Scottish and you can say the "ch" sound!

I'm LOL at burn tis land

And I thought it was LLan did no rather than LLan dud no? ( although I know nothing about Welsh )

Have we done Milngavie and Muthill ?

unlucky83 · 10/08/2016 08:37

I don't know Strathaven - imagine its strath-aven ...but probably wrong.
I think place names are difficult ...everywhere
I've just remembered another one - when I first lived in London I was meeting my friend who worked in 'suth urk' -couldn't find it in my AZ -then worked out it was Southwark...

Kr1stina · 10/08/2016 08:38

It's stray ven

Zogthebiggestdragon · 10/08/2016 08:44

Kirkcaldy - I'd go with Kircoddy personally. Any other pronunciation is WRONG.

MissMargie · 10/08/2016 08:49

If you go on to the Scottish Library Maps website and look at old maps of Scotland the spelling of place names has changed a lot over time so I would suspect some of the pronunciations have too.

Kalispera · 10/08/2016 08:57

I'm reading Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson and it's making me crazy.

He keeps saying 'British people', as in:

British people routinely drop syllables in words such as 'libree' and 'proply'.

Erm, no BILL, that would be English people. We say library and properly.

Between this and that godawful Little Dribbling book I've gone right off him. Angry

So is Stratheden is 'stray eden' ?
There was some fuss about the MH hospital called that a few years ago and I have a (Scottish) friend with a relative with MH problems and they were defending it - sure they called it Strath -eden but might be wrong..

Duns isn't Dunz or even Duns it's closest to Dunce but with a very subtle soft s sound. As I've heard it from borderers anyway.

WankersHacksandThieves · 10/08/2016 09:23

I wouldn't go by train announcements either try being on a train through Camelon.

Diamogs · 10/08/2016 09:29

I'm lurking here as an interloper, in a new relationship with a proud Scot and due to meet the family shortly...

wibblewobble8 · 10/08/2016 10:28

rogueantimatter · 10/08/2016 14:15

Duns?

Worried now Grin

Tough in Aberdeenshire anyone? - determined not to be left out Grin

TulipsInAJug · 10/08/2016 14:21

I've lived north and south in Ireland and lough is pronounced loch everywhere I've been.

prettybird · 10/08/2016 15:12

Just to confuse matters, Milngavie is pronounced one way and Milndavie Road (not far from Milngavie) is pronounced as you read it Confused

But even English English has its idiosyncrasies: the English frequently mispronounce Greenock as they think the "Green" is pronounced like Greenwich Confused

April241 · 10/08/2016 15:22

pretty I had a work colleague who asked me "where abouts is Mill-in-gah-vee???" Couldn't move for laughing!

April241 · 10/08/2016 15:25

And yes to Greenock!!

"gre-knock" no no no no!

😡

LovelyTrees · 10/08/2016 15:36

There are lots of places in Aberdeenshire that totally confuse me. Think pp already mentioned Strachan ("straaan") but also Finzean ("fing-n"). Peterculter ("Peter-coot-er") is another one especially when Cults is just "cults"

HirplesWithHaggis · 10/08/2016 15:39

Salmo I did point it out, I couldn't help the pedant in me. I got a "like" back...

Stratheden is pronounced as strath eden, I used to live near there and our school cross country training run went close to their grounds. No idea why Strathaven is different but the local accent is quite different to the NE Fife one. Confused

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2016 16:07

wibble - hang your head in shame!

Good on you Hirples!

I was brought up in England from an early age and distinctly remember my mum drilling 'it's a braw bricht moonlicht nicht the nicht' into me and having to repeat endlessly to get the 'ch' right.

I still sound very English, now living in Scotland again, but always 'ch' not 'ck' in loch etc. In fact, just remarked to someone how dreich it is today!

DanyellasDonkey · 10/08/2016 17:55

We used to go on holiday to Findochty - any takers for how that should be pronounced?

I also hate the "yous" that is creeping in everywhere. Even worse when it's written as "you's" - Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Think I will retire to pedants' corner..............then again, this is too much fun!!
