Results Day 2016 for Nats/Highers/Advanced Highers

Just thought I would start this thread as the results day will be here before we know it as the summer is flying past!

Dd has already seen next year's timetable and has 4 exams in 5 days!

Just back in the world of broadband. Sadly dd1 didn't do as well as she hoped - maths and physics not on the cert at all. As in English, Gaelic and D&M, B in Art (big shock, she and her teacher thought she was sure to get A), Cs in History (another shock, she was predicted A) and French.

Her Highers will be mostly fine, think she can redo maths in S6, and hopefully the history teacher will be ok ....... Others are Art, Gaelic, English and Graphics.

Groovee · 11/08/2016 21:32

Sorry to hear that Weegiemum. I'm trying to talk dd into doing Nat5 maths in S6 too. But it's been a tough few days. And she has to see the person who wouldn't listen to her before May with regards to choices on Monday regarding what she could do.

My DS1 is sitting N5 maths in S6, and DD will be sitting it in S4 on the same day - complete rerun of my brother and I doing O grade maths back in the day. However after his A's in History and Mod H this week I am half tempted to let him drop maths and do the AH Mods he wants to do but was denied as the school suddenly decided they were in the same column despite not giving them a column choice this year . I do feel that N5 maths means they have at least a certain standard of maths ability if he passes it

WankersHacksandThieves · 11/08/2016 21:50

That's a shame weegie but she still has 3 As a B and 2 Cs? That's great and she'll be well set up for her Highers on that. 6th yaers will be a lot less intense hopefully and N5 Maths can have a bit more study time devoted to it.

weegiemum · 11/08/2016 22:16

Thats what I'm hoping, and she'll be doing it alongside her little brother, to add a frisson of competition! I'm most impressed at how gracious and lovely she has been with her friends who did better. The boyfriend got 8 As and one of them was a higher!

Groovee · 15/08/2016 17:35

Dd has been into school and dropped Higher RME for maths. Have a new tutor lined up. While there she saw the drama teacher who told her she got the joint top drama result. Delighted for her.

I've spoken to the school today re DD and her D for maths. Apparently it is a fail but is on the certificate cos you get some credit points for it - I'd rather she failed altogether so it didn't appear on the certificate -if she can get a better grade.
I mentioned just doing the exam and they are less than keen but we are going into to talk to them tomorrow - I've said if she does badly in the prelim she will do the full year in S6 - so I'll see what happens tomorrow - not feeling hopeful...
Might head off to the home ed boards and see how they get qualifications for their DCs - see if I can fix up somewhere she can just sit the exam.

prettybird · 15/08/2016 18:48

Ds has been told that he was 2 off an A for his Chemistry: he got 70 and the grade boundary was 72.

It would appear he lost the biggest proportion of his marks in his assignment: he got 13/20 and was the highest in the class, so either his teacher didn't get across the CfE requirements or they had a particularly tough marker she suggests the latter Wink

It would cost us £30 to get a re-mark (re-funded if it changes, but the cost is not a problem). She's said it would be highly unlikely for him to drop to a C and that she's still confident he'll get an A for Higher, so she's left the choice of going for the re-mark is up to him.

I think I need to talk to the school! Hmm

Good news is that he was reassured by her about his ability to do Chemistry. Better to have this angst now over a Nat 5 than later over a Higher! Grin

Kr1stina · 15/08/2016 21:53

its a bit annoying isn't it ? I can't decide if it's better to miss by two marks or miles .

I hope he's feeling a bit better about his plans for 5th year and beyond.

DD has decided not to appeal her B in maths, despite getting an A1 in the prelim, because she doesn't need a A but a C woudl be a big problem . So not worth the risk .

They had a talk today about personal statements for UCAS and they woudl like to see a draft in the next few weeks . This has made Dd a little more focussed.

I fear I will have to go over to the higher education boards here and get up to date on UCAS etc . I'm not looking forward to it #overinvolvedmum

Last time I skimmed the threads they were full of mad people saying things like " well my child is simply not prepared to consider an institution as far down the food chain as Edinburgh university " and " it's so unfair that the scots discriminate against English students " .

I'm getting a headache just thinking about it .

Groovee · 15/08/2016 22:15

Maybe we could start a Scottish UCAS one x

dd1 called me at lunchtime to say she got the top mark in the school for her English folio (28/30). The history teacher has said she can do Higher though she has a C as her teacher is basing it on her A in the prelim. Other higher are unaffected and she'll do Nat5 maths again in S6 (with a tutor!) because she might consider teaching and she needs a B for that!

prettybird · 16/08/2016 13:50

That's great news Weegie

I'm sure dd will do fine in her Nat 5 Maths in S6. Nothing like a bit of distance (and some tutoring Wink) to give some perspective. Smile

Groovee · 16/08/2016 13:56

Great news Weegiemum. I've got a new tutor lined up for dd as I felt the last one didn't get her and what her issue was.

OP posts:
unlucky83 · 16/08/2016 16:35

On the whole good news here too - apparently she was 2 marks off a C in her maths - which is a bit annoying. And as she didn't do well in the prelim they won't automatically put it in for a remark (and in maths so less wriggle room than some subjects) - we would have to appeal through the council...
But subject to certain conditions being met - passing assessments and doing ok in her prelim - she can resit next year without doing the course/being in the classroom for the year... she may have to start going to revision classes after the prelim if nec in Feb. And at worst she would have to do the whole year again in S6.
It was a bit of a battle to get them to agree to it ...but they have. They have done it for other students in the past with mixed success. Hopefully she will be one of the successes -and maybe if she buts a bit more effort in she can scrape a B which would be better than a remark....

prettybird · 16/08/2016 17:39

She needs a B anyway doesn't she Groovee? So no real point putting in an appeal.

But it siunds like you've got a plan.

Is she motivated to put in the work if she's not in a class? And would she be receptive to a tutor?

prettybird · 16/08/2016 17:41

Sorry - meant unlucky83, not Groovee Blush. So might be getting offspring mixed up Blush

Groovee · 16/08/2016 19:32

My dd needs a B for teaching. Hence why new tutor and resitting.

AngryAngry and she's still stuck with higher dance as there is no space in philosophy.

OP posts:
prettybird · 16/08/2016 20:25

Can she make sure that the teachers know she's really keen on Philosophy, in case someone drops out soon?

Groovee · 16/08/2016 20:48

Knowing the twit who organises, he wants her in dance Sad. We get students at work and a number have slated him for similar things not knowing I have children at the school.

OP posts:
prettybird · 16/08/2016 21:18

Angry on your/her behalf.

She'll just have to keep her ear to the ground to find out if anyone drops out.

Is it worth putting in the request formally in writing to the school?

unlucky83 · 16/08/2016 22:06

pretty Grin I know I am getting confused too...
My DD doesn't know what she wants to do but I would say she needs Nat 5 maths for life..for choices -leaving her options open.
So if it was an easy remark and she got C ...it wouldn't be too bad...
but as it is with a little work I think she can get a B which would be better -more options.
She is rejecting the idea of a tutor at this point but that I will help her.
It is the sitting down and doing it she struggles with. She does need support with that (but then she is oppositional so you can't push too hard or it backfires). She point blank refused to let me help her do revision for the exams (apart from her Chemistry) but I am hoping she has learned something from the whole experience - that she does need to do some work/revision. She saw she could pass her chemistry with a little effort ... (but then getting 3As without any effort in some subjects maybe doesn't help with that)

She complains that Maths is a lot of repetition - which for someone is ADHD can be a challenge. In a classroom situation if it is something they can do they can switch off and miss the bits they can't do! If you look at the work they tend to start with the easy questions and finish with the harder ones -so if they have stopped paying attention /never get as far as the harder ones ... I get it completely.
I have been recommended a couple of maths tutors - so working on getting her to think about that being an option too....(I'll need the patience of a saint ....)
Honestly I can't wait until she is older - hopefully by university she'll know what interests her and will want to /be able to study ... she can't go through university like she is - I think I'll suggest a break to do something else before then if she still isn't motivated.

weegiemum · 23/08/2016 14:49

My dd1 also needs a b in maths to keep the teaching option open (she might like to do secondary art teaching) so is going to resit next year with a tutor. Right now she needs a break from it!

prettybird · 23/08/2016 15:46

Put in the request yesterday for ds' Chemistry to be re-marked. What will be, will be Grin

He seems to be happier now though - although he's not sure of one of his new Chemistry teachers (seems to have two Confused - the other will be going off on maternity leave in November) likes him as she told him off for talking he says he was trying to explain something to one of his friends Hmm Hopefully, that will settle down. Maybe she'll also think better of him if his mark is upgraded Wink I know that shouldn't make a difference

WankersHacksandThieves · 23/08/2016 18:59

First day back today seems to have gone okay. I asked DS if anyone said anything about his crash Higher in graph comm as our strategy is just to keep our mouth shut (he was supposed to get an A in art if he wanted to do the crash Higher and he got a C). He said "no" but that he'd been approached and asked if he wanted to do Higher Geography since he got such a good result. He managed to tell them that he hates Geography so, no he doesn't want to swap....lol

I am actually quite annoyed with his C the more I think about it. Not that I think he deserves more based on what I saw, I guessed he'd get a C from the work I saw. But more because the chosen subject matter was clearly inappropriate and demotivating and the support he got teaching wise was very poor. Can't really appeal on that basis though. If he'd submitted some of his work from s2/3 (different teacher who left), then I think it was closer to B/A level. Hey ho, he's not keeping it on anyway but he is gutted to not have done better but agrees he could have worked harder.

Also, apparently I need to write to school and ask for his actual scores though there is nothing on the website and no note that says we should do and I have no idea who to write to Confused. I've dropped an email to the office and asked for info.

prettybird · 23/08/2016 19:13

Fingers crossed that he gets to do his Graph Comm crash Higher.

Ds seems to be getting stuck into studying right from the start which is good. He's doing homework plus studying for a minimum of an hour a day already at least he says he is but his dad did buy him a new gaming computer last week as a reward for his results Wink)
