Just thought I would start this thread as the results day will be here before we know it as the summer is flying past!

Dd has already seen next year's timetable and has 4 exams in 5 days!

Our school will haul in those who need remarked/courses changed when they go back next Weds. Then we get a letter to sign giving permission for a remark. Last year DS1 got history and French remarked. He got history changed but not French didn't care a jot and continued with H history, which he got an A for today Grin. He has what he needs for an HND at the local college leading into 3rd year at uni if he wants it. I think given DS1 personality that's a better solution than being packed off to uni next autumn, unless he has a great growth in confidence over S6.

ssd · 09/08/2016 14:12

some great results here

prettybird · 09/08/2016 14:22

Ds has finally come downstairs.....in tears Sad

He's got 6 As, a B and a C - so exactly what he predicted. Only problem is that his B is in Chemistry, which is what he wants to do at Uni Sad

No amount of reassuring him that at least we can work out which question(s) he misinterpreted and make sure it doesn't happen again for Higher will console him Sad

(The C was for French which he expected)

hidingwithwine · 09/08/2016 14:27

Oh bless him Prettybird, that's where we're were last year. DS did really well but had a D for history after being straight A's though the whole course. He got it remarked and continued to higher, which he got an A in today. He wants to do history at uni although he's now considering the HND first as I said earlier. I had to take DS for a consolation KFC last year once he calmed down. It's really hard when they can't see how well they've done because of one mark.

wigglybeezer · 09/08/2016 14:29

Oh what a shame, hopefully it will just make him more determined for his higher chem.

prettybird · 09/08/2016 14:30

We've tried to explain to him that he'll still be ok for Higher but he's not listening yet Sad

WankersHacksandThieves · 09/08/2016 14:30

:( pb it's so hard isn't it? They have all done brilliantly well but have put so much pressure on themselves that they are disappointed with good marks.

chemenger · 09/08/2016 14:34

7 A's and a C here. The C in RMPS which is a favourite, will have to see if she can do the Higher now. The A in maths somewhat unexpected given the virulence of her hatred of the subject.

Kr1stina · 09/08/2016 14:41

Pretty bird - Last year DDd got 7As and 2Bs, so almost the same as your Ds. But one B was in biology and she wants to do dentistry , for which she needs an A at higher .

She was gutted, couldn't appeal because she only got an A and not a band 1 in her prelim . Turns out she got one mark off an A, school were very happy for her to do a Higher and she just got an A.

It happens to lots of kids . Once he goes back he can get his exact mark from the school . I bet he just missed it .

Groovee · 09/08/2016 15:13

Oh PB. Hope he is ok.

Dd hasn't bothered coming home. I suspected she was meeting friends as they were all at the bus stop earlier. Feel quite sad that she couldn't let me know.

Aww grovee I guess she is just excited and caught up in everyone's news and just hasn't thought.

prettybird · 09/08/2016 15:23

Krist1na - we've said all of that to him, but for the moment he's not listening Sad Maybe the school will have more success at reassuring him.

Just checked - like your dd, he didn't get a A1 for his prelim (79% instead of 80% but he'd been ok with it at the time as he was comfortable with where he went wrong).

He's also going to be doing a 6th Year, so it's not as if he'll be applying to Uni from 5th year (like I did).

Kr1stina · 09/08/2016 15:41

I guess not, pretty bird , I mean what do old people like you know ? Wink

The school will sort him out . Does he like his chemistry teacher ? Maybe she can reassure him .

DD said she felt worse ( annoyed with herself ) when she found out that she'd only missed an A by one mark, but of course it will make him ( and the school ) less worried about H chemistry .

And if he's doing 6th year , he'll take AH chemistry, so Nat 5 won't matter . Though I guess that hard for him to believe today, when it's the end of the world .

And of course it's hard for him to moan to his mates because overall his results are great and ( I guess ) better than many of them .

Poor lad .

prettybird · 09/08/2016 15:59

He loves his Chemistry teacher - that's why he's so upset as he says she's his best teacher (and that's saying something as he loves his Maths teacher too). Unfortunately, he's not getting her next year - but there is a possibility there might be a re-shuffle and she'd already said to him at the end of last term that if he had any concerns during Higher to go and see her (as she likes him too)

prettybird · 09/08/2016 16:01

Despite being sporty, most of his good school friends are "geeky" so they've all got good results.

Belies what some people think about Glasgow state schools Wink

Groovee · 09/08/2016 16:08

Dd has opened her certificates (she's finally come home)

She has level 5 credits in modern studies as she was doing that as a 2 year higher. But what is the core skills one?

OP posts:
WankersHacksandThieves · 09/08/2016 16:10

I have no clue what everything is for Groovee. DS has two extra pages of gubbins - I read the back and was none the wiser

prettybird · 09/08/2016 16:22

No idea either.

Just looked more closely at ds' certificate: under National Units, he's also got a 5 for Numeracy (I presume that's the equivalent of the old Arithmetic "O" grade) and a 4 for RMQ.

Steppenwolfe · 09/08/2016 16:31

Thank you for the good wishes..hope everyone is feeling OK... I think they (DDs. And DS s) need time to process results ... Pretty bird. DD had awful prelims ,she suffers from anxiety and wasn't sure she'd recover herself in terms of confidence or commitment . The grades I am most proud of are her B in Biology🌟 and A in Modern Studies .... she failed both and had had a huge panic attack in Mod Studies exam. Her mindset was very fixed and negative.about both subjects She had to cope with a set of pretty mixed results and was mortified and crushed . Once she had processed and got over them we talked about what went wrong ..what she could learn from her experience etc.
I've been teaching her it's all about the effort and we've been looking at Mindset stuff . Your boy can easily turn that into an A for Higher. A little struggle and fight for something is good . He just needs a wee bit time to put it in perspective and pick himself up . Although she worked hard , some of those results came easier than others... but she learned something FAR more valuable.

WankersHacksandThieves · 09/08/2016 16:31

Under core skills it says that he got 5 for Communication, Numeracy and something that sounded IT'y that I've managed to forget on the way down the stairs.

Lidlfix · 09/08/2016 17:33

Grade Boundaries have now been published on SQA public site- may help if you suspect they were close and just off?

Schools will have component grades but policies vary on their distribution.

Took DD for celebratory brunch and walked into the entire Social Subjects dept who she was dreading seeing as she'd been predicted an A. But at least she's reassured that they're happy for her to continue AH History with a B.

prettybird · 09/08/2016 18:12

Thanks Lidl. I think the school is quite good at sharing results if you ask - and he's a well-liked boy ("a credit to the school" Wink) who I'm sure they'll want to be sure (like us) doesn't lose confidence in his Chemistry Smile

He was surprised by his A for English I wasn't

It's a shame because the overall results are better than he predicted but he's devastated that his "good" (= favourite with Maths) subject was below what he (and the school) expected, despite having revised well.

BeJayKayven · 09/08/2016 18:29

5 Core Skills are 'built in' to the taught subjects at different levels. Numeracy, Communication, Problem Solving, Working with Others and Information and Communication Technology. They aren't assessed individually, no exam, they are developed naturally through the teaching of the subjects and awarded automatically along with the Nationals and Highers.

BeJayKayven · 09/08/2016 18:37

grade boundaries here

rogueantimatter · 10/08/2016 09:14

Prettybird - I agree that your DS will be fine to do well in H Chem. DS got a B in nat 5 English. Actually he was worried he'd have a C, but he went on to get an A in H English. The subject (apart from music which is very practical - like PE) that he did best in the prelims in by a country mile, and the only one his teacher openly said he had a good submission in was the exam he did least well in - complacent probably, maybe he misread a question worth 10 marks....
