Please don't flame me if you've seen a lot of similar threads or are fed up with brexit threads. Dh is Scottish. I'm English. We currently live in England but feel very disconnected with England following the eu ref. I've loved Scotland the few times we've visited and I'm v fond of MIL and SIL. Dh's job is very moveable. We're seriously considering a move. We are country rather than city loving people. Please tell me about where you live and love.

Don't live in Scotland now, but the Fife coast is lovely.

Stirling.

Quality of life is fantastic, community feel great, big enough town to have stuff going on, but also close to Glasgow, Edinburgh, access to Highlands.

Oh thank you all for replying! Yes, 2 dds (3,4) who MIL would love to get her hands on, which i would be v pleased with since i don't have a mother. Am excited about this already. Basically my dream is to have a house with a big garden in a little village which has a nice school in it, ideally where people won't throw rocks at me (my nationality is an openly discussed disapointment for MIL, but she's dealing with it well I'd say).

Scotland is no different to england.

The Borders. Beautiful, affordable and close enough to Edinburgh / Newcastle for city visits/commute. Also beautiful coastline and hills.

Wester ross if you want rural, Inverness if cityish? Although Inverness starting to look a bit shabby tbh that's not helpful is it lol

Hi where does your mil live? Borders is lovely but can be very remote away from main roads. New Borders railway line seems hugely popular with people who don't have to drive in to Edinburgh for work. Lauder very nice. Good school and you can drive to Stow for the train. But there is a thread on the Local Scottish Borders page that paints a mixed picture so you might want to read that. Some very good schools down there. Also have friends in Falkland in Fife which is lovely. Good luck with your search.

I live in Glasgow and love it (and will welcome and encourage anyone who wants to move to Scotland) but it doesn't fit what you're looking for.

How about Auchterarder (for a more village environment) or Dunblane (a bit bigger).

But as others have said, it depends on where your family is and how close you want them to be

I live in and love Edinburgh but I could happily live in London or places like Bath ,Oxford, Cambridge,Exeter or Winchester.

I don't feel any connection with the rest of Scotland.

Sorry to be a downer but there is a lot of anti English feeling in Scotland. Just be prepared for that, potentially. I would rent your house out for six months and rent somewhere in Scotland for those six months first. Preferably over winter because winters are long, dark and pretty miserable in Scotland. I will be flamed by Scottish mums betters and lots of people will say I am talking nonsense, but it is true, and I can only imagine it is worse after the eu result.

Well I live in Shetland and it's fantastic, but that might be too far away from the mainland for you.

It depends on how rural you want to live and where your family are.

Argyll is beautiful, but suprisingly remote & poor public services compared to other counties. Angus, Fife, Perthshire, Aberdeenshire are rural but with good connections.

Personally I find that Dunblane is no longer a village (disclaimer I was born there) & it's only the Keir roundabout that's stopped it joining on to Bridge of Allan, Causewayhead & Stirling.

I live in a town in North Lanarkshire, it's a perfect location. 15 min on motorway into Glasgow, literally a five minute drive and you're up in the hills. Love it here.

I live in a village in South Ayrshire. I'm English and have had only one anti English comment in the 4 years I've been here. That was in Glasgow after a Celtic game. I absolutely love it here. I'm 40 mins from Glasgow, ten minutes from the beach and ten minutes from the Galloway Hills and forest.

We live on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Love it here. Can get a train/tram/bus where we live. Lots of English accents round here too. Quite a lot of the girls in my brownies have English parents.

I drive from Stirling through BofA to Dunblane and back again every day. It's still very much separate imo. Hopefully the Keir estate plans will continue to be rejected.

We are in small town in Aberdeenshire, about 20 miles from Aberdeen. Beautiful countryside, friendly town, excellent primary and secondary schools (latter in top 10 in Scotland). With oil industry plenty of nationalities here, no anti-English sentiment I am aware of, and at least half of my closest friends here are English.
We have been very happy here now for 8 years, moved from central belt.

Sorry, didn't mean Dunblane is physically attached to Stirling. It just doesn't feel "village-y", more like the continuation of urban sprawl? Hard to put into words! Doune is still village-y. Perhaps it's when you get supermarkets building a place looses its village feeling & feels more urban for me?

Yeah, I get that mrs f2f I don't live there but it still feels like small town I suppose to me rather than a village. I do feel it does have distinct personality still. I'm from Edinburgh though and I still feel that places like Corstorphine, Colinton, Duddingston and Portobello etc. have their own distinct personality but that West Lothian just feels like a never ending succession of sprawl that continues right through to falkirk and beyond.
