To ask how Scottish Indyref1 NO voters are feeling about it today?

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/06/2016 22:22

I was just chatting with DH about the possibility of a second Indyref whilst watching the news and I wondered how those who voted no in 2014 are feeling now?

Cards on the table, for those who weren't on the Indyref threads, I was a strong no voter and campaigner last time. I work in financial services (have changed company since) and I had huge concerns about the impact on the economy of a No vote - all the issues around currency etc. I also found a lot of the campaign arguments very unconvincing and like we were being promised the moon which could never materialise.

I still feel that way about the last referendum. But I have to admit that watching the news today, seeing people proudly declaring they voted out because of immigrants...this isn't a country which currently reflects me. I still have massive concerns about the economy although it's a lot less clear cut given the likely turmoil over the next few years.

I'm well aware that an independent Scotland may have huge issues getting in to the EU btw, it's not so much about the EU membership but about feeling a bit less affinity with being 'British' today.

A no the first time and an even bigger no if it was to happen again.

cdtaylornats · 14/03/2017 21:51

Deeply pissed off and frankly not in the mood to accept a Yes result this time around - if Yes wins then it'll be time for Indyref3.

We settled it. This time we should finish it.

Thegruffalowswife · 14/03/2017 22:19

I can't believe how many signatures the stop indyref 2-westminster petition has got!!! We are nearly at the 100000 to have it discussed in parliment already. Let's hope May tells her where to shove her referendum.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/03/2017 22:40

No first time and NO now.

Bejazzled · 15/03/2017 20:34

I feel let down and betrayed.

Bejazzled · 15/03/2017 20:34

Oh, just noticed it's a zombie thread....

Still feel the same mind

Thegruffalowswife · 15/03/2017 21:41

I know it is awful

Thegruffalowswife · 15/03/2017 21:47

Have you signed the petition. I can't believe there are nearly 140000 signatures on it already!

MercyMyJewels · 15/03/2017 22:00

I remember your posts Stat and they were brilliant.

It was English Nationalism that caused the Brexit vote. I think it's just the start of the right wing racist hate. And I don't want to be part of it. At least Scot Nationalism was based on something vaguely positive. Thinking of leaving tbh but in Scotland, who the fuck would you vote for? It's all screwed and I'm seriously fucked off

Fontella · 15/03/2017 23:17

It was English Nationalism that caused the Brexit vote

Absolute bollocks.

In England 15,188,406 voted to leave the EU

In Scotland 1,018,322 voted to leave the EU

In Wales 854,572 voted to leave the EU

In Northern Ireland 349,442 voted to leave the EU.

The Wales and England vote could not have won it. It took leave voters in Northern Ireland and Scotland for Brexit to happen.

UK total 17, 410, 742 to leave.

UK total 16,141,241 to remain.

Thegruffalowswife · 16/03/2017 07:40

Yes it is very odd that people say "english nationalism" caused this.

I voted leave and I am not an english nationalist.

And it is also striking to suggest that english nationalism is somehow different to scottish nationalism. It is a bit whacky if you ask me.

Yes I am sorry SNP in my eyes you are the same as the BNP but with a different target for your hatred.

To paint english people out as racists is ironic at the moment.

Thegruffalowswife · 16/03/2017 07:42

And worryingly the SNP have more support.

Bejazzled · 16/03/2017 17:00

Unfortunately there are some Scottish Nationalists who could rival the worst of English far right nationalists in their hatred and vile language. They are as bad as each other.

Anyway, thank goodness it looks like indyref2 is postponed at least for a couple of years. It makes total sense to see how the Brexit pans out before making such a momentous decision. I doubt Sturgeon and Salmond and their party will see it that way though.

rogueantimatter · 16/03/2017 19:37

I voted no and remain.

Still no.

I'm very annoyed at the request for another ref. There is no mandate for it. The majority of Scottish voters did not vote snp.

I am utterly depressed by the number of people who would vote yes as a protest against the current Westminster gov't. Independence would be for a very long time indeed whereas we have no idea what the make-up of the Westminster gov't will be like in ten+ years.

I would love to have a proper debate about the benefits, if any in being a very small country, the positive reasons for wanting independence - not the fact we would no longer be 'tethered' to rUK, the ethics of dismantling a union and the notion of a Scottish identity.

Also an answer to the reduction ad absurdam criticism of the supposedly greater representation we would have in an independent Scotland.

We also need a proper look at the idea of nation states; their history and future and a good hard think about the effects on the whole world of climate change.

We're fiddling while Rome buns imo.

I agree with SirChen that there's no evidence that Scottish people are any more accepting of immigration than rUK.

I suspect the real reason NS and co want independence is that she/they want more power for themselves because I can honestly see no justification in breaking up UK, especially as a consequence of a referendum that less than 10% of UK would vote on.

rogueantimatter · 16/03/2017 19:38

reductio

Thegruffalowswife · 16/03/2017 20:43

I agree completely rogue.

remoaniac · 18/03/2017 16:33

Anyway, thank goodness it looks like indyref2 is postponed at least for a couple of years

Well it would be, if the Scottish Greens would see sense. I see Nicola S is going to ask for the time to be voted on by the Scottish parliament too. Come on Greens, you can say yes to indyref 2 but say not before Brexit has happened so March 2019 at the earliest. The SNP can't do it without you.

StatisticallyChallenged · 22/03/2017 15:00

It's always funny when you see a thread, think "that looks interesting I'll have a gander" and then realise you started it yourself a couple of months ago!

Hi StatisticallyChallenged glad to see you. Hope the pressure of saving the union won't be too great. We are relying on you !

I'm sure I'll be there with stats galoreGrin

GloriaV · 24/03/2017 07:59

I voted yes and leave. Now I see what the numpties in Edinburgh have come up with for 'the Scottish People' (named person, even stricter drink laws, etc) I am voting No this time.

Fontella · 24/03/2017 11:45

Morning all!

Did any of you see the Andrew Neil intro last night?

What struck me is that it was delivered in a Scottish accent. Here's a man, whether you like him or not, who is proud to be both Scottish and British, as I am proud to be both Welsh and British. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/03/2017 12:26

Totally agree, they're not mutually exclusive at all. I travel quite a bit for work - both to London and to other european countries and there is a big difference in how I feel when I'm in them. When I'm in London I still feel like I'm in 'my' country, if that makes sense. It doesn't feel different to me. On the other hand as soon as I'm in France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Austria there is a noticeably different vibe to each of them.

Hard to explain what I mean, but I don't really think of England as another country.

Hi fonty Grin

OoarOoarAyFontyItsMe · 24/03/2017 12:48

They definately are not mutually exclusive. I love Scotland England and britain.

Let's face it there is nowhere better really is there.

Still a no.
