Brexit - would Scots mnetters vote to leave the UK following a fresh referendum post Brexit

Hi, if Brexit happens (I'm for Remain) a fresh independence referendum for Scotland seems likely. Would Scots mnetters be more likely to vote for independence with the prospect of EU membership?

I've had my "loyalty to my country" questioned by SNP supporters.

This is because I don't give a fig about being "Scottish". I was born and live in Scotland but I don't think of myself as Scottish. I'm not proud of being Scottish which seems to upset them and seems to make them think I have no right to the opinion that I want the part of the UK I live in to remain part of the UK.

Oh and of course nonsense about my not having a Scottish accent as if that counted for anything.

Lucky you never having experienced anti English sentiment. I know SNP supporters who would never dream of being racist but talk about white settlers.

As a matter of law of course it is possible to be racist about English people.

Maybe racism is the wrong word to use - but whatever label you want to put on it, being on the receiving end is really shocking and unpleasant.

It had never happened to me either, until the referendum. I know it's not universal but it is there.

So, my child with SEN being told by our LA that his issues are 'having a right English accent like his parents' is not racism then - it's bigotry?

The elderly Edinburgh couple who tried to cancel the sale of their flat to me when they discovered I was English (home counties accent to boot)?

The (current) SNP MSP who was my neighbour who said that 'if the English all fucked off back over the border we'd all be a whole lot happier'. This was not at a well oiled dinner party but over a cup of coffee, 11am and stone cold sober.
He was also upset by his 'English sounding' surname and said he'd been teased at his Edinburgh ( merchant) school for it.

By and large, Scotland isn't particularly racist, but racism against the English is a different matter. It is met with a self indulgent chuckle, unless you are on the receiving end of it. Then it can be insidious and really nasty.

Change English to, say, Polish, Nigerian, Chinese and tell me it's not racist?

snp isnt racist, but no doubt have racist supporters, just like every other political party. Ive been subject to scottish racism from English people in England (proper toff tories) but dont think that Tories are by and large racist arseholes maybe tho.

Actually, the SNP have a very long history of failing to condemn Racism perpetrated by their members and supporters.

Which looks very like condoning it to me.

Hardcore No voter in indy1; voting Remain now. In event of Brexit will most likely miserably switch to Yes for Indy2.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 29/06/2016 21:09

I reluctantly voted aye in Indyref1. Voted remain.

Would vote yes with bells on if Sexit/Indyref2 happens.

Sorry about the above "deleted" post. I was not fully aware of Mnhq policy and accidentaly broke the rules by posting a petition on here instead if the petition section. Apparently it upset some people enough to report me Hmm
Sorry if it offended anyone, but it was a bit embarassing having a deleted post in case anyone thinks I was being rude or heaven forbid being sweary or offensive Shock (that is what I would think if I saw a deleted post)

No I wouldn't vote to leave the UK. I don't want to leave the EU either. I guess I'm not good at break ups!

And I hate the term Brexit as much as I hate Indyref 🙈🙈🙈🙈

Me too LordPercy someone above mentioned Sexit instead of indyref 2. I'm trying to think of something else for brexit any ideas? Grin

Oh yes, Scottish Independence all the way. And retain trade deals with the EU...hell, retain membership! Westminster has never had Scotland's interest at heart and never will!!

I sometimes think I live in a different country from everyone else. I've never had money refused or been called "jock". People are just people regardless of their accent. Seems it's ok to be racist and a Scottish nationalist but only if the race you are against are English people. Some people really need to grow up!

It seems that it's easier to forgive every other nation that we've fought wars with except the English.

To answer the original question, I would not vote to leave the UK under any circumstances.

I voted remain. Regardless I'll never vote for independence. I do think it will happen in my lifetime because they won't stop wearing us down but hopefully it'll be after our dcs have all completed education and DH and I can move away.

Ha! Just realised I've already commented on this thread from February. Creambuns just popped up to stir the pot. They seem like the sort of Scot I love to be associated with not. I've never been called Jock outside Scotland or anywhere else either

Happily the SNP seem to be in decline - even supporters of the blessed Nicola have noticed concentrating on independence means they let everything else go to shit.

Before another independence referendum we should have a UK wide referendum on ending the devolution disaster.

Report
Nyx · 13/09/2017 09:59

A UK wide referendum on 'ending the devolution disaster'? That would be fair, yes? If everyone in Scotland voted to keep the Scottish parliament and only some of the rest of the UK voted otherwise, Scotland would still be outvoted and that would be fair? As far as I know only 19% of voters in Scotland want to 'end devolution' anyway.

I don't think Scottish independence is inevitable at all. The SNP are in terminal decline and with a bit of luck will be out at the next Scottish elections, and their independence nightmare with them.

I don't think people are being worn down towards supporting the idea either - if anything it seems to me that attitudes are being hardened against it. After Nicola's foot-stamping and demanding another referendum in the Spring, and then being told no, many expected a surge for the SNP in the subsequent election, but the opposite happened. Indeed, the dreaded Tories made massive gains despite probably the worst election campaign in living memory by Theresa May! It seems to me Scotland has made up its mind, and is sick to death of the Independence question.

It's been a long time since we were asked. Devolution has been a waste of money and has done Scots no good at all.

Sturgeon keeps mentioning that Scots should have a say in English policies that affect us so surely the reverse is true?

I get called mac but then a lot of people i know get called by shortened versions of their surname. Rarely jock (and never twice).

I've had Scottish (and ni) notes refused and a local newsagent tried to charge me an extra 50p for Scotland on Sunday because it was a foreign paper!
