Scottish Labour

I've voted snp for the last while, but would align my political views with a traditional labour government, not new Labour. I can get on board with Jeremy Corbyn, but can't get past Kezia Dugdale. Are Scottish Labour more Corbyn or milliband?

OneMagnum, I agree about questioning and rigorous debate. My natural inclination is left of centre, but no debate means the latest brainchild can get through without real scrutiny - at least that would be my fear.

Not checked the candidates in my area, although the SNP were out in force yesterday. Good idea - I need to start somewhere!

ClopySow · 03/04/2016 09:28

The labour candidate in my area is disappointing. I'm disappointed.

Is there a simple explanation for how the Regional members are voted in.

Don't you have a less partisan source than wings itsall?

peggyundercrackers · 03/04/2016 10:11

Wikipedia has a good bit on it en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Additional_Member_System

If you scroll down the the piece specifically about Scotland and look at the table asking questions about how the system works it's quite astonishing that the majority of people don't understand what they are voting for at all.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/04/2016 10:14

I've had to dip my tablet in a bucket if bleach after using that link.....

HazyMazy · 03/04/2016 11:27

Hmmm, that's straightforward Hmm (wings website)

I'm not clear on what the job of those in regional posts is.
Partly as I'm in SW Scotland and have nothing to do with anyone east of Langholm. But the region crosses the area.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/04/2016 11:29

Don't you have a less partisan source than wings itsall?

  1. It's the best explanation I have seen.
  2. The political leanings of the website make no difference when it is explaining a simple mathematical method - unless you think folk will somehow catch the SNP Hmm
OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/04/2016 11:33

It's the fear of the subliminal brainwashing that puts me off. I'm already thinking that maybe I'm less Scottish than SNP voters.....:o.

It's the fear of the subliminal brainwashing that puts me off.

...and demanding the prescence of a 16 year old boy and girl from every school for a personalised brainwashing by Nicola and the offer of a dummy election pack for every school by the SNP. If any other organisation was promoting themselves to children there would be an outcry.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/04/2016 12:03

Ermm - my link was an April fools... Grin

I think it is fairly important that 16 year olds (adults in Scotland for many things) should be encouraged to get involved in the election process as they can vote? However I'd hope that the scheme you allude to is being run by the Scottish Government rather than the SNP?

OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/04/2016 12:03

And I wish they'd keep their paws of our national flag as it is not an SNP flag it's Scottish. They'd do well to remember that they were elected to represent everyone in Scotland regardless of whether the person voted for them or not.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/04/2016 12:04

It doesn't come over as an April fool :)

And yes, you'd hope that it was but it wasn't.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/04/2016 12:06

And I agree that children should be engaged in politics. My 14 year old is a card carrying political party member - not the SNP.

ClopySow · 03/04/2016 22:32

I'm not sure you've been clear in telling everyone how you feel about the SNP.

OP posts:
OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/04/2016 23:12

Oh well, I'll try harder next time :o. I also forgot that we are not allowed to criticise them so my card will be well and truly marked.

ClopySow · 03/04/2016 23:21

By who?

Shhhhhh! You know........them! Wink

morningtoncrescent62 · 04/04/2016 10:21

Just realised I've only got the choice of the 'big four' for my constituency vote. So I'll have to vote Labour then, despite my misgivings about the party as it currently stands. Even if Kez stands down after the elections I'm not sure it would mean SL moves to the left - part of the reason they're in such disarray is the number of leaders they've got through in such a short period of time, and I don't see a credible socialist leader waiting in the wings. Neil Findlay is probably the closest to where I am politically, but I don't think he would even begin to take the party with him.

Definitely Green in the list vote. I really like some of their candidates in my region.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 04/04/2016 10:46

I've only got 4 to choose from as well. Our Constituency Labour candidate seems to be 4th on the Regional list - I'll need to read up a bit more on them all though.

peggyundercrackers · 04/04/2016 12:43

i have no idea how many candidates I can choose from as there always seems to be quite a few.

morningtoncrescent62 · 04/04/2016 14:25

peggy, there will be a list of who's standing in your constituency and region, but I haven't been able to find a website that has links to all of them. I found mine by googling 'Scottish elections 2016 statement of persons and parties nominated' with the name of my constituency - I got both the constituency and the region that way. It looks as though the smaller parties are concentrating on the list vote so you may find you only have a choice of 4 for your constituency vote.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 04/04/2016 14:41

I just googled "election 2016 (my region)" and got a link via the council website.

And then found this from the herald:

rombri · 04/04/2016 18:59

I've been lurking. Like some others on this thread, I am always baffled by how people see the SNP as a progressive left party. They really aren't. If this is what people want then voting SNP is not the way to achieve it.

I've just spotted this open letter to Nicola Sturgeon, which articulates it better than I can.
