DH told DD off for clyping on her brother and she just looked like this Confused

StaceyAndTracey · 14/08/2015 23:33

When I worked in Maryhill I discovered that a " flat " only refers to a multi storey flat. A tenement flat is called a house .

Littlegiraffe · 14/08/2015 23:34

Needing honners

(Possibly as a result of a square go bloodydoghairs )

PiesnThighs · 14/08/2015 23:38

Outwith is a Scottish word? How?!

I remember the Bon Accord lorries too, I guess it was a Grampian thing?

Love the word thole! And scunnered is brilliant too.

Current round here is, "sakes min" which I seem to use a lot (as in, "for gods' sake, man!")

MrsPresley · 14/08/2015 23:41

My favourite word is stookie!

You also know your scottish when you go to work wearing sandals, summer dress/t shirt but make sure you have an umbrella in your bag Grin

And a baw hair is a measurement Grin

Littlegiraffe · 14/08/2015 23:43

A 'piece' being any variety of sandwich.

Capewrath · 14/08/2015 23:44

I refuse to believe swithering is only scots ! Surely it's more widely used?
As well as a press we had the kists and I think the armoire, never seen it written.

An ashet is so much more useful than a platter, somehow.

Timeously and outwith are v civil service usages now.

My mil ( ex Barrhead) used to use kenspeckle if I was wearing something she didn't approve of.

Rain comes in

It's a nice soft day (normal summer drizzle/mizzling)
A wee thing wet ( bloody pouring)
They'll be getting it bad in Harris/Lewis ( stair rods with limited visibility)
Normal for Glasgow (impenetrable cold horizontal with nil visibility)

But I'm lost in the Doric.

Capewrath · 14/08/2015 23:49

Dh is just reminding me of Disneyworld where nothing works...

Behooven · 14/08/2015 23:51

Stock of rhubarb and a poke of sugar (1 of your 5 a day)
John Smeaton

Oh and .......

You know your Scottish when....
Kreeshsheesh · 14/08/2015 23:56

Quines and loons - Aberdeen /North East , surely? Never heard in central belt!?

A plate of soup. Dh (English) thinks it should be a bowl!

Ookmybanana · 15/08/2015 00:03

You know you live on the west Coast when you always take an umbrella with you, but you don't bother on the east coast it's too damn windy. I lost many a brolly in edinburgh and aberdeen to the lazy East wind.

I like oxsters for armpits. "He was oxstered oot the pub".

Cloudhowe63 · 15/08/2015 00:19

'Beach ready' means you've zipped up your jaiket and remembered a scarf.

Swearing every 3rd word? Amateur! Inserting swearies into the middle of words - genius.

Your live-in lover/dp is your bidie-in. (Doric, I think.)

prettybird · 15/08/2015 09:04

Bidie-in is also used in Glasgow (although it could've of course come from the Doric): one of the new Glasgow MPs' bidie-in is the sole Tory cooncillor. Should make for interesting debates at home! Wink

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2015 09:07

Mum said to me last week wheres the weans the day erm they are at work mam Grin

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2015 09:10

My favourite scottish word is Fud

prettybird · 15/08/2015 09:31

I got teased at work in England for describing a graph as going "up the way". Apparently that isn't standard English Confused

PrimalLass · 15/08/2015 11:11

Outwith is a Scottish word? How?!

No-one else really uses it. I'm an editor and always want to because it is such an efficient word. This isn't my blog, but I completely agree.

BlueThursday · 15/08/2015 12:45

Using "how" as a synonym for "why"

And one I regularly bring to MN: shareen nanjiani Wink

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2015 12:50

Love How instead of why .

ShuShuFontana · 15/08/2015 12:57

I do not sound in the least bit Scottish, but I say HOW? instead of why? and also I "remember and" ...most English fowks will "remember to..."

Messages is one I like....I don't use it though.

it's through the house .... just means something is somewhere in the building, not that it has been taken home

and Lobby or vestibule....only Scottish houses seem to have these :o

BuyMeAPony · 15/08/2015 13:08

This came up in Active Topics. Excuse the interruption, but I can tell you're all not english because no one corrected the lack of apostrophe. You all just got on with it. Good on you. That wouldn't happen in Chat. I'm Australian btw

HirplesWithHaggis · 15/08/2015 13:21

Do you mean the "your Scottish" in the title?

BlueThursday · 15/08/2015 13:22

Ah I read it as "know your Scottish" similar to know your onions
