Rat in wheelie bin

Hello there
For a while we have had a rat in our outhouse. We just left it and hoped it would be caught in our trap but it didn't after months. It is huge.
Today I go to my wheelie boba nd open lid and it's just there eating.
I scream and slam lid shut and tie lid down on bin.
Now what do I do to kill the rat???

Don't kill it, poor thing. Tip the wheelie bin on its side then poke the lid open - it will run away.

Are you sure it went in the lid. You need to look at the base for a gnawed hole.

We got the council to the ones in the house, the old dear who sold us the house liked them, he came along with a cricket bat to whack them with. That worked!

Ffs, it's not the plague, it won't harm you. Just open the lid and put the bin on its side and let it go on it's way.

I've got nothing against killing rats humanely if they are suffering or you are at risk of infestation. But one in your bin isn't an infestation. And no fucking way should you be killing a healthy rat just because you have a pathetic overreaction to the sight of one. And certainly not when you have so little clue how to humanely dispatch an animal you have to ask how.

Nope. You can't be sentimental about rats. They're vermin which can cause serious damage spread diseases. That includes parvovirus- dogs can't get their booster vaccination at the moment.

I've never heard of rats being solitary animals, highly unlikely there's just one.

Try your council, the may have a pest control officer though not all do.

Please do not use poison. You could poison all manner of other wildlife, to to mention people’s pets.

Following as we have a rat living under our shed and I can't decide wether to leave it in peace and keep as a garden pet or get a humane trap to remove it. I've definitely only seen the one.

We trapped a rat in our wheelie bin once. The next day we discovered it had gnawed a hole through the plastic and escaped. Rats are evil with superman powers!

We have an air rifle for shooting rats. It’s the most humane thing, imo. Poisoning is a horrible prolonged death and affects other animals either directly or indirectly. Traps could trap other creatures too. Not much use to the OP, unfortunately, as she won’t be able to get hold of an air rifle at the moment.

I hold no brief for rats and would not hesitate for a second to eradicate any that moved into my house but they are not 'evil'. They are just animals doing what all animals - including humans - do. Living and breeding. They are no more 'evil' than otters, sheep, red squirrels, or any other mammals you'd care to name.

You cant have rats in your habitation ffs.
They spread disease, they're vermin. Unfortunately nature is a bit shit that way.

I looked out my kitchen window today and saw 4 and don't know what to do
I have 3 kids that like to play outside.
I live in the country and wee rabbits and a squirrel around but rats and mice what can I do. I have put out 2 traps they came took the food and ran off

Just set it free , poor little beggar ! Why do humans have to kill everything! Take the bin to some bushes nearby and tip it up.
