Hello there
For a while we have had a rat in our outhouse. We just left it and hoped it would be caught in our trap but it didn't after months. It is huge.
Today I go to my wheelie boba nd open lid and it's just there eating.
I scream and slam lid shut and tie lid down on bin.
Now what do I do to kill the rat???
Any ideas please
Thanks

Oh. You drowned it.

Oh.

IAmFleshIAmBone · 07/04/2020 22:19

You drowned a living creature? You are the lowest of the low. I actually feel sick. That's unforgivable.

catlovingdoctor · 08/04/2020 00:03

Poor little creature 😥

PutYourBackIntoit · 08/04/2020 00:23

The water makes them look elsewhere for habitation. It's the main recommendation online. Tipping the bin up is not going to do a thing if they have a nice nest going on in there..

JKScot4 · 08/04/2020 00:29

I’m starting to feel sick the amount of vile attitudes towards animals I’m reading on MN in the last few days.
Filling the bin with water, what are you? a fuckin sociopath?

Branleuse · 08/04/2020 00:34

You live in the countryside and you are shocked that there is wildlife around??

womaninatightspot · 08/04/2020 00:35

Rats are awful, humane trap and air rifle are the standard rural answer. Also a dog is a good deterrent.

7Days · 08/04/2020 10:49

Lol at the bleeding hearts.
Of course you kill rats that come I to your home in any way that you can.
As though being ripped up by a cat or dog is any better - aren't you against fox hunting as well?
Grow up will you. This is very annoying to read

IAmFleshIAmBone · 08/04/2020 12:04

Most sane minded people don't think it's acceptable to kill another living creature in such a cruel, inhumane way. There is something seriously lacking in a person that could do this.

7Days · 08/04/2020 14:56

Dont be daft. What was she to do fgs, a rat I'll n her doorstop, during lockdown?
I'm going to assume she didn't cackle with glee while devising the cruelest torture she could think of.

Honestly.

IAmFleshIAmBone · 08/04/2020 17:26

Well there are more humane ways to catch/kill rats than drowning... Honestly... Some people are very cruel, it's unfathomable.

Picklypickles · 08/04/2020 17:30

Well that was nasty. I see the occasional rat in my garden, its the countryside there's all sorts out there. I saw one this morning, just said hi and left it to its rodenty business. I've been living in the countryside for more than 30 years and haven't caught the bubonic plague yet.

Serenschintte · 08/04/2020 17:32

Op I wouldn’t blame you for not coming back with all the abuse you are getting.
For what it’s worth you did what needed to be done. Rats are vermin and you don’t need them living near you. Let alone in your bin.

Andi2020 · 08/04/2020 19:37

Can anyone give any advice on how to properly get rid off them. I'm really scarred they will come in through a drain to house.

TrainspottingWelsh · 08/04/2020 20:27

@7Days there's nothing wrong with killing rats when necessary. But humanely, and to control a population. Not killing one slowly simply because you are frightened by the sight of them. And for the record, terriers break their necks, an incredibly quick death. It's not an animals fault that op doesn't know and cares even less about how to humanely dispatch an animal when needed.

@Serenschintte Sorry, as someone that has dispatched animals quickly and humanely when necessary I'm not at all bothered whether I offend anyone that kills things slowly just because they have an unacceptable childish fear of them

ifowaa · 10/04/2020 14:50

I am scared of rats, but I think it's so sad you drowned it, what a horrible death.
You could have easily set it free, instead you have a wheely bun full of water and dead rat - you are an idiot.

LDN1 · 07/05/2020 02:14

People don’t seem to realise that we live amongst other species and it’s only when another animal poses a viable threat; that action should be taken. Drowning an animal because you’re squeamish is disgusting and I hope you’re haunted by the action that you’ve taken. I have a feeling you might be...

Mollymalone123 · 27/05/2020 20:32

Our dogs usually get rid- pain in the backside and there won’t be just one!

justanotherneighinparadise · 27/05/2020 20:46

Do you actually realise what the poison does to them? It’s not humane at all. They bleed to death internally. Don’t try and make out that’s painless FFS.

Chillipeanuts · 27/05/2020 20:47

Let it go?
Not surprised there are rats rurally, tbh.

thenightsky · 27/05/2020 20:58

Look on youtube for the clips of working jack russell terriers. They kill rats in seconds - so fast you can barely see them. Far more humane than poison.

Mollymalone123 · 28/05/2020 08:50

@thenightsky we had jack Russell years ago and it was quick- it is a quick and better way to dispatch
I have Shetland sheepdogs and until I let them out once and saw it for myself-they were so fast at dispatching too.i would not use poison anymore and think it’s better for dogs to do it.must be in their dna

donquixotedelamancha · 28/05/2020 08:54

They are no more 'evil' than otters, sheep, red squirrels, or any other mammals you'd care to name.

I agree about rats but Dolphins are clearly evil.
