And now I have to burn the house down ...

Seriously though, I canโ€™t find photos online or an adders nest to make sure I recognise one should I see it.

The snake was basking in hot plastic ๐Ÿ˜ญ

My God how scary. Beautiful creature though. Live rurally and am always worried I'll bump into one.....

mookinsx · 20/04/2019 21:55

I don't believe they do nest. They don't attack unless frightened/threatened.
Likely to be found in a compost pile. Grass pile or similar.

Not sure what you can do to not get them, but just be aware and I'm sure you'll be ok

AwdBovril · 20/04/2019 21:55

Wow how beautiful. Lucky you! Definitely walk carefully through the long grass though.

QOD · 20/04/2019 21:56

*of an adders nest ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Oh man. Itโ€™s not beautiful. Itโ€™s hiseous and horrifying and awful

I screamed so loud and ran in circles

Neither dh, dd or dm whose annex I was right by, heard me. So I had to run round panicking in a complete flap.
Fuckin hideous things

We get Adders in the garden, they love it when the temperature warms up and it's sunny. Just watch where you walk and what you turn over. They're generally shy and like a reclusive lifestyle.

It's usually much later in the year when we see them out though. Shows how hot it is at the moment.

Finfintytint · 20/04/2019 21:58

My cat was found licking an adder in our paddock a few summers ago. The cat did a fake fainting act and I thought sheโ€™d been bitten! DH hooked it up on a broom handle and dropped it into longer grass (the snake not the cat).

camelstraw · 20/04/2019 21:58

I hope you didn't scare it!

Once you're over the shock I hope you'll realise how very lucky you are.

(They're a protected species btw)

WatchingTheWheels85 · 20/04/2019 22:00

My cat brought a live one in through the kitchen window and dropped it right by my youngest (4m at the time) who was in the bouncy chair.

TeenagersandFurbabies · 20/04/2019 22:00

At least it was in your garden, I found a young adder underneath the cats litter trays last year.

Still18atheart · 20/04/2019 22:01

We had one when I was very small on the garden parents just basically said the bottom end of the garden was out of bounds because of the big scary snake. Didnโ€™t even investigate out of curiosity

FadedRed · 20/04/2019 22:03

Must have been a shock, Op, but they are a protected species.

Singlenotsingle · 20/04/2019 22:05

We saw one in my ddil's garden last year but it hurried off out of the way. You're so lucky, they're an endangered species. Beautiful creatures.

Pascha · 20/04/2019 22:08

How lovely (from an internet distance).

Although, I seem to recall that we dont live that far from each other going by previous conversations so perhaps I shouldn't be so smug...

Lemoneeza · 20/04/2019 22:12

I saw one at the end of my garden yesterday. Would not have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes. Only saw his head but he looked fairly small

Vinorosso74 · 20/04/2019 22:12

I am terrified of snakes so that would give me the real heebeejeebees!!!! I can't go in the reptile house at the zoo which is a shame as I quite like iguanas and lizards.

QOD · 20/04/2019 22:16

We didnโ€™t hurt it, they donโ€™t have ears do they so my high pitched screaming and actual wailing wonโ€™t have hurt it.
My bro in law put it over the fence into the woods and it slithered off.

Looks like a beautiful female! We saw this male on a walk the other day.

Our garden is riddled with slow worms currently, I love seeing them! We had a few grass snakes last year, but no adders so far!

TwitterQueen1 · 20/04/2019 22:27

They're not hideous! The sun has brought them out. We saw a young one on the common the other day - they like to lead a quiet life Smile

Smokeahontas · 20/04/2019 22:27

I would have shat my pants Shock

sackrifice · 20/04/2019 22:28

Oh that's fantastic.

Why did you scream, did you see something scary at the same time?
