... for a couple of weeks, how regularly would you expect him to phone home? Just trying to get a sense of what might be 'normal' ..!

My grandad used to call everynight at 10pm when he worked on the oil rigs.

Every night - and he does when he is away. I usually get a few texts at various points as well.

when my dh away on business he usually makes contact a couple of times, so, say, once a week. I know other dh/dps who phone home every night but a) my dh wouldn't have time/chance esp as he's often in the US but b) it would bug me if he phoned every night when I'm trying to watch all the tv he doesn't enjoy and when I have my friends over!

My DH is away every week for 2-4 nights and calls me every evening.

At least once a day. Usually 2 or 3 times at the moment but we're tryng to organise a wedding!

When he's on ship then it's once a week if I'm lucky, although in Lebanon he'd call when it was about 1am if he was bored.

Every three - four days. A text or e-mail normally, very rarely a phonecall.

My DH worked away for five years.... home at weekends though.

He called me approx 2 or 3 times a week.

I probably speak to him once in each 2-3 day trip on average, sometimes more, sometimes not at all. It depends on what's going on at home, how I am, how the DCs are, what the time difference is and how busy he is.

Some people he knows have a policy of never calling home, others call more often. I think you just need to be happy. For me, the most important thing is being able to contact him if I need to, rather than waiting to hear from him.

DH has worked away a lot in the past. He would always call at least once a day, usually more. Just checking in. And because he missed me.

That's what worked for us, but different strokes for different folks & all that.

once dh is working he is WORKING. He sometimes forgets to eat his own dinner.

since we had kids (9 years) when he is away he makes an effort to talk to them at bedtime etc because they miss him; he's read a bedtime story to dd1 over iChat before now

me, he tends to email. I quite enjoy it actually, it's a different kind of conversation.

My DH is often away 3 nights a week. He call twice a day usually. Once around seven for a chat to our teenagers, and we might also have a brief chat at this point . He then calls just before bed and we have a proper "how has your day been?" chat. We often text on a morning as well.

He usually calls twice a day when he is away, once at the kids bed time, then later when he has eaten and we can chat.

Probalby text two or three times a day or if he is able to we chat on Skype/messenger once or twice.

I think it depends on whether there are dc or not. I dont mind if h doesn't call every night but it annoys me now we have dc and he doesn't call for days on end and they are crying

Mine travels for about 4 days at a time, maybe every 3-4 weeks and we speak every day when we wake up (whoever is up later if there is a time difference, he is often in US) and again at whoever's bedtime is first, also often at some point during the day, when he will speak/Skype with DC's too.

depends on the time zone he's in! use skype/txts/emails more than calls

When DH is abroad (not v often) we will text each other every night, but I wouldn't expect him to call if he wasn't in the UK (although he does sometimes).

I would expect a call or a text every night I think.

Every 2 or 3 days, plus a text when he lands and when he's about to board the plane back.

Mine only calls if he is working in one of his firm's offices. Rarely (if ever) calls if he has to use his mobile.

Usually sends an email or two each day (more if he is at a conference and very bored with schmoozing).

A phone call every night at the minimum, unless he's somewhere where the time difference makes it tricky in which case a text or two. Often more - would never go for more than a day without contact and my dh travels a lot.

Mine was in US for 2 weeks a couple of weeks ago. He phoned most days. The timezone made it a bit more awkward, but he tried to ring in his lunch break to catch dd and I teatime. I didn't fret too much the days he didn't call.

Every evening to talk to the girls and then (unless I say I'm tired and am having an early night) poss later to speak to me, and then again in the morning to speak to the girls again.
