Do you 'match' your DP/DH physically?

Oh the things you ponder on a quiet afternoon when the baby is napping and you should be working!!!

I was wondering if people usually 'match' the looks of their partners ....
For example ... DH and I match quite well I think. We are both slightly over average height (I am 5'7" ... he is just under 6 foot) ... we are of average build ... neither fat nor skinny.

I have friends who match so perfectly they could be related ... one couple make a striking pair, he is 6'4", she is 6' tall, both dark hair, green eyes ... another couple, both on the short side, stocky with blond hair and blue eyes ...

I once went out with a bloke who was 6'4" and although he was gorgeous (to die for actually) and lovely, I never felt right with him ... I had to stand on tip toes to kiss him and felt like a little girl holding his hand walking down the street ... also sex didn't work that well ... Also, because he was so good looking it felt wrong ...
Not that DH and I are ugly you understand we are nice looking I think but not model material .... but we 'fit' together IYSWIM?

So, do you 'match' your DP/DH ... if so, how? If not, how not?

I completely blow your theory Ghosty: I am a 5'3" curvy (when I'm not just fat anyway!) type and dp is 6'4" I can assure you we don't have any er, height related problems though!

Catbert · 04/05/2005 07:19

Yes - DP and I I think are of comparable looks, size and build... There's some apparent basis for people choosing similar types to them - something I saw on Desmond Morris "Naked Ape" I think. It was very interesting!

Most of my friends see to "fit" their partners in this sense.

The celeb couple that always make me laugh in this respect are Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman! Odd - but well matched! (Assuming they are still married!)

almost40 · 04/05/2005 07:27

I'm sure this is not what you're saying, but my sister always says that after a couple are together for a while, they start to look alike. By that, she means that they start to smile similarly, mimick mannerisms, say the same types of phrases and idioms, etc. But to answer your question, I think DH and I do look alike, medium build, medium height, medium looks. medium everything actually, except that I am overweight atm. My sister would say we look alike because we're a couple though.

throckenholt · 04/05/2005 08:02

nope - we don't match.

I am short and fat and lazy, he is tallish, skinny and has much more energy than me ! He also eats much more fattening stuff than me (he is a biscuit junky ). He comes from a family of skinny people, I come from much more solid stumpy stock.

We are both dark haired though.

Not sure which way our kids are going - but think they are pretty solid and short too (one has been christened "bone-crusher" at the age of not quite 2 )

suzywong · 04/05/2005 08:32

nope not at all
I am 5'8" and he is nearly 5'3", I have long legs he has very short chunky ones, though thankfully not hairy, he has fabulous cheekbones, I have none and we are different races

but our kids our luminously beautiful even if I do say so myself

suzywong · 04/05/2005 08:32

nearly 5'5", he's not a dwarf

TrophyWife · 04/05/2005 08:33

dh and i dont match at all.

dh is 6'4" and im 5'4",
i have short wavey brown hair and dh has salt and pepper hair.
dh is well built (could do with losing a bit) and i am slim(ish).
other then that we have similler tastes and ideas and most of the time we agree.
we have never had any "height" related problems IYKWIM

Kelly1978 · 04/05/2005 08:43

Nope. Only couple of inches in height difference but other than that totally diff.

I'm very pale, light hair/blue eyes, slim. DP is Indian, so darker skin, black hair, brown eyes. He is rounder, and has a cute face, and is broad built. I like the fact that he is a lot bigger build than me, nice and cuddly!

Our twin boys have come out as one very Indian looking, dark skin and hair, and the other could almost be white! Although he still has brown eyes and dark hair. The darker one is also a lot slimmer than his chunky bro. Their faces are gettign more alike, but the fatter ne looks more girly!

ghosty · 04/05/2005 08:50

suzy, I am sure I have seen pics of your children sometime ... and yes, they are beautiful
Not sure it is a 'theory' as such ... my parents are very different ... my dad (when he had hair ) was sandy/almost ginger and has blue eyes and my mum is very dark ... my grandfather was 6'5" and my grandmother was 5'0" ...
I was just curious about other people ...

dh and I don't match - we are both fairly short (I'm 5'2" and he is 5'7"), which is nice 'cos I fit under his arm perfectly!! But otherwise, I am slim and he is fat, he is blonde and I am kind of brunette(ish), and we have quite different facial features - where mine are big, his are small and vice versa. Both our dds have elements of each of us, both in looks and personality.

marialuisa · 04/05/2005 09:22

The matching hypothesis-stuff of a million undergraduate psychology projects.

DH and I "match" although he has proper English skin and gets sunburn (which I don't!)

fuzzywuzzy · 04/05/2005 09:35

Don't look alike at all
Dp is 6' well built (used to be a gym junky when he had time).
I'm 5'3" and stick thin. many moons ago when on holiday, an Arab approached dp (who was holding my hand), and said 'This she's your daughter yes???' Thought Dp would deck him (he didn't).

ThePreciousIdiot · 04/05/2005 09:40

Sorry not read all the response I would say yes dp and I match each other physically

A while back, wasn't there a theory (or something) that went something along the lines of the fact that if you married someone with similar features to yourself you were self obsessed(?) I am so it would figure in my case

dh and i quite similar now that you mention it.but in subtle things, like limb length. We both have outrageously long arms, long fingers, long feet.We both have fair skin that burns easily. There is only 2 inches between us in height. We both have broad shoulders.
Our ds1 looks like a clone of his father.Facial features, build, colouring everything.I have had people stop us on the street before now to comment on it...yet sometimes he turns in a certain way, and he is the image of my nephew.(digression there, not really relevant!!)

nikcola · 04/05/2005 09:45

god no dp is georgeous!

crunchie · 04/05/2005 09:45

I think you can consider a match if you are both similar on the 'attractiveness' scale. Although dh and I do 'Match' We both have naturally dark hair (although mine is dyed red) we both have blue eyes, small chins and look similar - although I don't see it Our children favour him (DD1) and me (DD2) but they also like like each other.

I am not boasting but I do think/have been told that DH and I are both attractive people and therefore a very similarly 'matched'

PinkFluffPudding · 04/05/2005 09:49

Yes, DH and I match so much that people have often commented on it. We're both v slim and tall (I'm 5'9, he's 6'4), both dark, same light olive skin, brown eyes, similar shaped oval faces. No prizes for guessing how our children will turn out!

Sounds a bit wierd actually (shudder) I really hate all that smug matching Posh 'n' Becks coupley stuff but you can't help who you're attracted to. Perhaps we're both incredibly narcissistic!

coppertop · 04/05/2005 09:54

My dh is almost an exact opposite of me. He is very tall whereas I'm short. He has dark hair and eyes and tans very easily. I'm very fair-skinned due to my colouring. He is naturally slim no matter what he eats. I put on weight very easily and am a long way from being slim.

Lizzylou · 04/05/2005 10:16

We are around the same height, he is 5ft 10", I am 5ft 9", but he is blonde and I am brunette, he has slim build, I am built like a brickie, we are both fair skinned...............DS is exact split of the two of us.....all the good parts obviously

bonym · 04/05/2005 10:20

We are the same height, both naturally slim but getting porkier as we get older , same size feet, both have dark hair, similar level of attractiveness.

NoPearls · 04/05/2005 10:20

DH and I look pretty similar - same colour hair, same height and similar build. I like to think his moustache is more obvious than mine !

Gwenick · 04/05/2005 10:21

ermmm lets see..........

Him - 6ft, black, dark eyes, quite 'stockly (not fat!) built

Me - 5ft, white, blonde hair, blue eyes, petite - and slightly 'plump' at the moment..........

No I guess we don't match each other physically LOL

Tinker · 04/05/2005 10:35

Not sure we match - he blue eyed blonde, me green eyed dark hair but we "fit" ish. Have a theory that there needs to be an approx 6" height difference (he's 6' 2", I'm 5'6" - so not quite right)and similar build - we're both average to slim.

Have "gone out with" (do people still say that?) a few men who were shorter or same height and it felt very uncomfortable for me.

suzywong · 04/05/2005 10:39

amazed at the concepts of men needing to be taller. It dosesn't bother me in the slightest except for the rare photo of us together standing up and then it registers and conditioning kicks in
