Partner of five years no longer seems as perfect as I believed

I have a partner of 5 years who I believed was the most perfect and innocent man.We met on a dating site and after 3 weeks of dating he moved in.I met his parents soon after. He had previously been in a 28 year relationship, 2 years of which he was banished to the spare bedroombuntil he left back to his parents and we met 6 months after.
Recently he fell asleep browsing on his phone and I discovered he was on tinder.I questioned him and he said he was not even aware that he was on that site.
This made me curious so I secretly logged into his phone.Apart from tinder he had logged onto an escort website called adultwork.
I also discovered he had enquired about sensual massages dating back to the year we met....once asked if happy afters were offered with the massage!
Last year he did chat with a girl from a dating site asking if he can share her bed!
I was heartbroken...I never suspected any of this.He is a quiet non confrintational shy man.

So with all this information,we had a discussion.Told him that I went into his phone and diacovered all this.Offerd him that if it is that he now wants something different,I am happy to let him go and enjoy his life with someone else as life is short.
We are planning to get married in 2028...it does not make sense.
He started crying, that he is angry with himself for doing all this, that he has hurt the best person who ever happened to him ,that he never met anyone of these liaisons.I asked him why he did not and he said because he realised that it was wrong.
I asked him if he has ever been with another woman since we met and he said he hadnt.I even asked him if he has any fantasies that he is not getting from home,he said no !
I told him that I loved him,has always loved and believed in him and that he shocked me by all this.He promised not to do it again and was profusely apologetic.

He has recently retired am always worried if the temptation will come back when I am at work.

He has had some health issues the past 3 years and we have been to hospital for investigations and all that....he takes regular meds.
Recently he received some good £ inheritance from his late dad and have me some which I have invested.
I used a lot of chat gpt to help me process all this.
I have been secretly in his phone here and there to monitor things and for now there is no new concerns.
I still love him but can never trust him....am in that limbo....my brain is messed up.
The thing is if I got home and find that he has left .....will not want to ever be with another man...I will devort my time to charity causes....he ticked all my boxes from the beginning.

Three weeks. Three weeks!. That's all.

StandingDeskDisco · 11/09/2026 15:27

There is no man so "in love" as one who needs a place to live.

He never loved you. He just wanted to get out of his parent's spare room.
And is only so upset now because he will have to go and house himself elsewhere, look after his own health, do his own housework and laundry, and he will no longer have regular sex on-tap like he does with you.

Sorry.

BunnyLake · 11/09/2026 15:27

@Nishnash Why did his ex banish him to another bedroom? Could it be, perchance, he was doing then what he’s been doing now?

Anyone who comes out with the ‘you’re the best thing that ever happened to me’ manipulative crap when they’ve been caught is full of bs and never to be trusted.

Exactly this. And also why his parents liked you so much - because you'd taken their problem off their hands.

He needs to leave. Sorry.

What have I just read?! You moved in a man who had been in a 28-year relationship after three weeks and thought he was the "most perfect and innocent man". I'm not sure why innocence would be so admired in someone almost of retirement age but you put this man on a, frankly, unachievable pedestal and he took advantage of it. Why would anyone in what must have been his 50's need to move back in with his parents after coming out of a relationship? Why on earth wasn't he renting/buying something? You came along at just the right time to rescue him.

He has been hiding things from you the entire relationship and is now lying to you. You have lost all trust (understandably) and have resorted to monitoring his phone. This relationship is dead in the water.

pinkyredrose · 11/09/2026 17:35

Whose idea was it to move in after 3 weeks, yours or his?

whippersnapper55 · 11/09/2026 17:36

How would you know he's 'perfect and innocent' after 3 weeks??? Totally bonkers to move him in when you barely know him.

Now you have got to know him you realise that he's still on dating apps and looking for sex workers. THIS IS THE POINT AT WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE PUT HIM AND ALL HIS SHITE OUT OF YOUR HOME!!!

Honestly, if you choose to stay with him after that, I'm afraid you deserve all the crap that is coming your way. He's a liar and a cheat. He won't change.

unsync · 11/09/2026 20:56

Don't marry him, dump him. You cannot trust him. Of course, he'll do whatever it takes to try to persuade you to stay with him - he has you lined up to look after him as he ages. He's about to lose his housekeeper and nurse.

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 11/09/2026 21:06

He’s a liar and a would-be cheat who has managed to keep his true nature hidden from you. This is who he is. Nothing will change whether you stay or go.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 11/09/2026 21:15

Do not ever marry this man!

Nishnash · 12/09/2026 09:14

It was more me than him

That's pretty nasty, why would she deserve it? None of this is her fault, it is all on him. Many people choose to stay. Maybe think before you type. Basically you are taking out your frustration on op.

Nishnash · 12/09/2026 09:14

It was more me than him

Why exactly? Why on earth would you want to live with someone you've just met?

NoHotGirlsInHell · 12/09/2026 14:19

Hard? Get some self respect.

Disturbia81 · 12/09/2026 14:27

Bet they were all younger than him weren’t they?

phoenix098 · 12/09/2026 15:23

Yeah... no wonder you're still with the loser

Nishnash · 12/09/2026 18:25

Of course you give it back!

LetGoLetThem1234 · 12/09/2026 18:33

Yes return the money. You have morals and a conscience don't you?

Zanatdy · 12/09/2026 18:35

Yes, return the money.

LadyLolaRuben · 12/09/2026 18:37

Getting him out of your home and life is the best thing for you. The hardest part is over. You need to not take him back - he will never change. Look after yourself and yes return the money he gave you

FannybygaslightinGovan · 12/09/2026 19:59

Don't return the money. Take it as damages for having to put up with someone for five years who wasn't who he said he was.

Lou2026 · 12/09/2026 21:05

He cried because he was caught. He, no doubt has always behaved like this.
I strongly suspect hes not a good man when hes purposely creating and speaking to women on dating websites, hes paying for sex and other things.

If you continue to allow him to use you, you'll end up very unhappy and stuck in your own home.
