The moment your crush withered?

What was the moment the lightbulb came on for you and a mad crush just died?

I’ve posted about this before but the moment that killed a totally consuming crush was he developed a fixation on keto, ‘raw food’ and intermittent fasting, and I saw him eating ‘dinner‘ that was just four plain very soft-boiled eggs and then lick the yolk off the plate and I nearly threw up. He also called it the ‘keto protocol’ with a serious face like he thought he was in the army, in some ways that was even worse.

Met a guy on holiday with my friends, wonderful holiday romance, was besotted.

He travelled to see me in my home time when we both got home, at my mum’s house. He’d written, and recorded, a song for me which he played (on cassette because I’m old) and made me listen to in front of him, and in fact my mum.

It was excruciating. The words ‘maybe we could drive in a big old car’ were featured. I can’t remember more but best mate still sings that to me on occasion now.

MargoLivebetter · 18/08/2026 21:19

@NovemberMorn that has turned my stomach too! Gah, such a grim mental image of that strand of saliva briefly linking you both. 😱

Optimisticdramalarma · 18/08/2026 21:29

Aged about 15,I had a massive crush on a lad

He was so cool-out of uniform,he wore skater shorts/tee shirts and vans style trainers (very fashionable back in the day) and had a mop of thick blonde hair

He never really noticed me and life went on

Years later,I was walking the kids to school and we had to pass a shell garage on the way

Skater boy walked past me-he hadn't changed at all-same clothes, same style bag, same trainers and same hair

I felt teenage me die a bit inside-i mean everyone changes a bit in 25 years but that memo seemed to have passed him by

What i saw in him I do not know

PaperMachePanda · 18/08/2026 21:36

He didn't smell nice.

Super handsome man, smile that could make a woman instantly wet. I'd seen him loads in the gym a lot and we'd caught eyes.

Anyway, after a shower I caught him in the elevator on the way out. He smelled like a teenage boy (Lynx Africa - boak) and it just dried me up so much.

When he said 'hello' I pretended to have a sore throat and made sure to avoid him.

He plunged his cafetière in a really slow, intense way like it was a spiritual experience rather than just making a coffee.
Nope.

This is hilariously specific.

ByRedBee · 18/08/2026 21:44

Shorts socks and boat shoes!

MarilynMerlot · 18/08/2026 22:11

Oh my Lord id almost forgotten a man who was so damn handsome and charismatic I was properly swooning, and then he started arguing over the price of mackerel, like an extra 40p for olive oil was the reason we would lose the next war. Cannot stand penny pinching . I get saving money but literally standing with me - a woman considerably better looking than him - comparing the price of ham like a 70 year old. No no no.

Both of is in our 40’s. They tried to initiate sexy phone chat seconds after I’d just informed them my cat had passed away af the vets overnight (and was very obviously devastated)

I was 16. He turned up for a date in socks and sandals.

It was sandals for me too. Not with socks, but that was irrelevant for me, I just find men in sandals a real turn-off.

MadMAGA · 19/08/2026 02:49

I had a crush on a chap I knew through social circles, made a big effort to be at events he was likely to be at etc. He was gorgeous: dark hair, hazel-green eyes, chiselled jaw. We got talking one evening and something I said made him laugh. It sounded like a hyena. End of crush.

SchnitzelAgain · 19/08/2026 03:39

Young teenaged crush, best looking guy in school with beautiful curly hair, I was devastated when he said I had big hips. Saw him last year and he’s not only aged badly but he has a tiny patch (soul patch?) of hair between his lower lip and chin.

🤣🤣 I love this, and your best mate!

Fuckmyliferightnow · 19/08/2026 05:06

I fell in love with a lad at 18/19 I used to see regularly in a club, I couldn’t bring myself to talk to him, I would get so bashful. He was so good looking and sexy but was quiet. When ever I went out I would pray he was out. One day I came out of a pub and saw a fight happening. When I looked closer, it was him, repeatedly punching another guy in the face, it was vicious. I later found out he was in with a racist group and had clearly been radicalised. It broke my heart.

WhatNextImScared · 19/08/2026 07:55

I had a devastating crush on a guy I sometimes worked with when I was about 30. He had beautiful eyes, gorgeous hair, a Mancunian accent, and was even a part time musician working with bands including MBV. Absolute catnip to me at the time. I think the limerence was reciprocated too, but I didn’t act upon it because I was already living with my then bf (now DH).

One summer day he turned up to the office wearing flip flops and he had the most appalling feet. The end.

MarilynMerlot · 19/08/2026 08:03

Feet seem to be a dealbreaker

Mine was at uni. Really tall, handsome guy in one of my classes - he looked like a model and was a nice guy too. While chatting one day it became apparent he was a big Disney fan. Instantly turned off! He was a lovely guy though!

Oh this has just reminded me!

In my early twenties when I’d just moved to London I pulled a guy in a club, we exchanged numbers and met for a coffee date a week later. He told me that his older sister had recently got married and it had been a Dr Who themed wedding, which he thought was amazing. Nope!

When I found out that she (I am male) had had a one night stand when she was under the influence. That was a bit of a red flag.

well, doubt you like many of us then

Chesatony · 19/08/2026 08:21

Beautiful looking man who was racist - that was one.

Another couldn’t tell a sparrow from a blackbird.

Another gorgeous young man spoke about his ex like she was a state - she wasn’t.

Good looking guy but tearful at the most banal thing. Made me feel like a brute with no feelings or that he was a little boy.

Humanswarm · 19/08/2026 08:39

Lovely guy post my divorce. He was vegan but initially thats not a deal breaker for me. I do eat meat but can easily go without. Go to the stage of going to his place, he was cooking for me..veggie curry. Fine. Post meal he suggested a film, he had one in mind. It was a vegan documentary on Netflix. Complete with his very own PowerPoint..one slide included cows being slaughtered. Yeah. No.

Jamtomorrowneverjamtoday · 19/08/2026 09:19

Discovered all the interesting outdoorsy activities attractive school dad talks about are pretentiously documented on Instagram, like some kind of weird advert of his life. Also an arty picture of his new dark green wooden front door (replacing the white PVC) #farrowandball.

Listened to an interview with an old crush who moved to California, who now has a weird new accent where he drops all his ts and says pardy and compuder…. So unattractive

It's excruciating being with a man who has an embarrassing laugh.

I had a blind date in my teens; I only went because I was convinced the date was a young man I had seen around in the GPO canteen, he was lovely; I thought I had seen him looking at me in admiration, so when my workmate said someone had seen me in the canteen and wanted a blind date....I was sure my luck was in.

However, the blind date was a short (I am tall) ginger-haired man, the dead opposite of who I expected, but that was OK...looks arent everything.

However, he took me to see a Peter Sellers film, and laughed harder, longer and higher than anyone else in the cinema.

Moral...blind dates can be humiliating.

dropitbobbie · 19/08/2026 14:28

Got chatted up by a gorgeous guy in the park many years ago. Agreed to a date. On the date, it became clear he was one of those people who have saliva gathered in the corners of their mouth all the time when they’re talking (didn’t notice it during our brief chat in the park). Not a chance in hell I could kiss that mouth.

pomegranatescent · 19/08/2026 15:13

Early stages dating a guy. He was quite extroverted and often talked about how he was a great singer and his friends would often ask him to sing at their weddings and birthdays! I never asked him to sing for me because I think I’d have cringed to death.

Anyway he invites me to his for dinner. Just before I arrive he messages me telling me the front door is open and to walk straight through to the kitchen.

Then texts me as I’m pulling up telling me where to park.

As I walk into the house, he’s in the kitchen chopping veg and crooning at the top of his lungs 🎶 as if he’s on a West End stage. As I enter the room he stops and says “Oh! Wasn’t expecting you to be there! Was just singing away to myself” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

He was so desperate for me to hear him sing. I know that for some people that would have been lovely, but not for me thanks Elvis.

Ariela · 19/08/2026 16:13

I had a huge huge crush on someone I worked with from time to time (every few weeks) in my early 20s. One time we both got stuck at a work related thing a bit later than usual and he said he was going to the pub straight after would I like to come too? Well I thought it could be the start of something but no the pub he suggested we went to was his local and in there were a group of very glamorous girls none of whom I had ANYTHING in common with (they were all haidressers/beauty types, made up to the nines looking smart, I was just scruffy after a day's work) and it was clearly those girls he wanted to chat to all evening (and not chat to me).
It was awful. I wondered why he suggested my going. I still don't know the first thing about hair or make up! To make matters worse I was starving hungry as I'd had to skip lunch, and so in the end I crossly said I had to go and he barely noticed!

Saw him a year or two ago, having not seen or heard from him for over 10 years apart from the odd phone call but we do have mutual friends in common, and he's not aged well. He is a nice bloke as a person but just not my type at all, think I dodged a bullet there!

Ah, so you would hate it if your partner thought about the Romans a lot (interthreaduality, sorry!)?
