The moment your crush withered?

What was the moment the lightbulb came on for you and a mad crush just died?

I’ve posted about this before but the moment that killed a totally consuming crush was he developed a fixation on keto, ‘raw food’ and intermittent fasting, and I saw him eating ‘dinner‘ that was just four plain very soft-boiled eggs and then lick the yolk off the plate and I nearly threw up. He also called it the ‘keto protocol’ with a serious face like he thought he was in the army, in some ways that was even worse.

Oh Golly.

I fancied a boy who was two years older than me all the way from primary school, through secondary, and he never noticed me.

When I was 17 he came back from his first year at uni wearing 'indy' clothes, including socks and sandals and he chatted me up in our local pub before asking me out. I was horrified by his footwear and declined.

Handsome, charming mid 30s school dad, went to pick my child up from their home and he answered the door in navy velour old man slippers. Instantly turned off.

He got blackout drunk at a work thing and fell over. ICK.

It was more than a crush, it was a fairly long-term boyfriend, and I thought I was in love with him.
Then my beloved 14 year old dog had to be put to sleep at the vets. When he picked me up that night, I was crying so much I could hardly tell him what was up. When I eventually got it out, he said "Is that all?" I actually fell out of love with him that very moment....and soon after I called it a day.

Bogstandardname · 17/08/2026 19:00

I was 16. He turned up for a date in socks and sandals.

shivermetimbers77 · 17/08/2026 20:24

Snoring. For me, it’s almost always snoring. Or chewing with their mouth open. 🤢

rainbowbrong · 17/08/2026 21:32

Guy at gym, never spoken to each other. Intriguing, silent man of mystery. Tall, dark, passable. Occasional eye contact. Once asked him if he was using some equipment and he shook his head and smiled at me. Ooh, what could happen? Left the gym one day shortly after to find him sitting outside talking on the phone. His voice just wasn’t right. It was kind of higher pitched and squeakier than I’d expected. Any butterflies I’d ever wondered about immediately stopped flapping, just withered and died. What a shame. I like having a gym crush as it makes me work out harder!

That would have been it for me as well I reckon.

He plunged his cafetière in a really slow, intense way like it was a spiritual experience rather than just making a coffee.
Nope.

LittleJustice · 17/08/2026 22:34

Old man slippers, that would be it for me too. Ditto socks and slides.....

With my ex, it was his snoring, his heavy mouth breathing (he couldn't breathe through his nose) and lack of good personal hygiene. It gradually got worse as he aged. Couldn't bear to be in the same room with him by the end.

Nonnimuss · 17/08/2026 23:47

Thumping crush on older boy when I was at school. It was like a cartoon when I first saw him(eyes popping out, heart leaping out of my chest. He floored me like no one before or since). I didn’t know him at all, just admired from afar. Left school and didn’t see him for a few years. Came across him through work and he had not aged well. I barely even recognised him, it was only because someone told me his name that I realised who it was. I think my lack of teenage hormones may also have helped me get things in perspective.

We really need the laugh reaction back. I know what you mean about making a constipated serious scene about the most mundane things ever as well.

He wore beige socks and his feet looked like they belonged on a corpse.

Mollymaid64 · 18/08/2026 10:56

He was lovely, ditched his friends every time he saw me, to stay with me, flirt and chat me up all night. Then one night he went and bought a drink and didn't offer to get me one.
I could have gone to the bar first and offered to bring a drink, but he beat me to it. If it was the other way round I'd have offered, especially as it was so busy.
Not only that, he was up for taking things further with me; but with zero effort from him clearly. I went off him after that.

Mollymaid64 · 18/08/2026 10:59

I've seen a photo of my tight fisted crush recently and his beer belly has expanded somewhat. Yuk.

Whatbloodysummer · 18/08/2026 11:24

Handsome, tall, blonde, green eyed, well built, great career, great dresser...
and the most boring person I've ever had the misfortune to date.

He looked like a damn model and treated me very well, but I could fall asleep whenever he opened his mouth because it was just sooooo bloody boring!

Zero interest in anything other than flying helicopters (he was taking lessons) and being a printer, and how difficult it really was to get the colours right...yawn

The schoolgirl crushes have brought back memories.😆
From age 13 to 15, I had a crush on the local butchers son. He was only 15 himself, and some mornings he would help his dad in the butchers shop before school started. I used to hope my weekly cookery class contained meat so I could go in on the way to school to buy my sausages etc.

He never spoke to me, it was a worshipping-from-a-far relationship (on my part)
Moving on a year, I had left school, went to a local dance with my friend, two lads split us up to dance. Mine was tall and pimply; I made my escape as soon as the dance ended.

My friend joined me and pointed out the boy was my 2-year crush ... and I hadn't even recognised him.

Sat next to a lovely funny man on a 6 hour flight…we chatted the whole time and hit it off…in my head I was imagining him meeting my family and all the lovely times we would have. Stood up to get off the plane and turned round to find out he came up to my chest and I was a good foot and a half taller…and I’m not that tall! Crush instantly faded (yes shallow I know) and we both said goodbye and exchanged numbers and I studiously avoided answering my phone for a month after.

Shallow....but understandable.😎

These have really made me laugh, especially the feet like a corpse.

He got a corporate job in London and turned into an arrogant yuppie. The final straw was him ringing Next about a refund and using the phrase "I'm not saying it's the fault of yourselves"
Honestly I clamped shut

MargoLivebetter · 18/08/2026 12:50

Two instant turnoffs of mine have been:

The use of the word "Ta". I'm not snobby about so many things that would send many pearl clutchers into spirals, but I am repelled by the word "ta". Back in the day when girl met boy at bar on a night out, I was having a long flirty chat with a very handsome man. He ordered us both drinks and then said "ta" to the barman. It took every iota of politeness to remain present to drink the drink with him.

Earwax. I had a crush on someone at work and one day I was sitting next to him in a meeting and was immediately repelled by a large piece of earwax in his ear. That was it, crush over.

kellygoeswest · 18/08/2026 13:09

We were both 21 and I was his first girlfriend. We were around his house watching a film in his bedroom when he spotted a spider. He immediately jumped up and shouted "MUUUUUM" to call his mum upstairs.

I don't like spiders but it was tiny so I was like "erm its okay, I'll get it" and he continued panicking the entire time until I took the spider outside.

Omg the pretentiousness would have dried me up like the river wye.
