I love my partner, but when England plays he turns into an absolute arsehole. I told him tonight that I’m glad they’re out for this reason. He’s kicked me out of the house, and I’m currently sat in my car. Can’t drive anywhere cos I’ve had a couple of G&Ts

strictly speaking they have one more match ?

that said hope all goes well op.

Edited

Yes because that’s the most important point in this thread (not) 🙄

Ethelspagetti · 16/07/2026 07:14

Sounds like he has an anger problem that’s been made worse by alcohol. That’s abusive to kick you out. You can call the police to make him let you in. Can you live like this? I couldn’t.

I wish I understood better the psychology behind that kind of behaviour. I love football but it's only a game. I suppose alcohol accounts for some of the abuse in some people but not in all. I can only think that when passion during a match turns to disappointment it must trigger violence in some people'a brains. It's dangerous and not something you ahould be expected to put up with.

Ocelotfeet27 · 16/07/2026 02:01

There are significant increases in rates of domestic violence when the England football team play - much higher if they lose but higher even if they win. You are not alone in this OP. I am sorry. I would tell him when things calm down that in future ue needs to go out to the pub or elsewhere to watch the football.

Sadly it's not just at national football level. It's at local level especially local derbys.

Football really attracts the worst in some men. And some women if the number of hidden posts are anything to go by.

Laurmolonlabe · 16/07/2026 07:48

When you get back into the house change the locks, and when he can't let himself in it will give him a broader perspective.

Lentilcakes · 16/07/2026 08:04

That is just awful. I hope you have the courage to leave him properly - and you got an uber to a friend or family last night.

As others have said, domestic violence massively increases after an England game.

Why are people taking her DH’s side? Normal reaction from a DH should be proportional disappointment, a bit of a moan about the manager and look forward to the next tournament.

Show him the statistics of domestic abuse during football l, maybe if he realises he's part of a disgusting toxic bit of behaviour he'll be humbled. But I couldn't stay with a man like this. My husband loves football and we watched the match together, he was quietly disappointed like a normal grown up and remained a sane, kind and polite husband. That's how it should be.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 16/07/2026 08:25

OP, please don’t stay with a man who thinks he has the right to force you out of the house. It doesn’t matter why he did it. That is not acceptable behaviour. His aggression is likely to escalate if you stay with him.

And from me, too.

If this happens again before you leave, OP, call the police. If he's drunk and abusive, they'd probably take him to the nick for the night and he'd miss the match,

Sereine · 16/07/2026 08:29

This is not going to improve, OP. I hope you're taking serious steps to leave.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 16/07/2026 08:47

Please get out of this relationship, OP. He’s being an abusive cunt, and as other PPs have said, I highly doubt he’s a prince of a partner the rest of the time.

As soon as the game was over the first thing my DD and my son’s girlfriend said was that they were glad they’d watched the match at home and not at a pub in the city, and the first thing I felt was a huge pang of anxiety for all the poor women and children who’d be bearing the brunt of men’s violence and anger over a fucking football match.

A friend of DS’s said he remembered as a child his dad telling him to go upstairs to his bedroom after England lost a game because he was going to ‘smash this place up’, which he then did. Why are they such arseholes?

Comtesse · 16/07/2026 08:58

This is LTB territory, hope you got on ok last night.

Bestfootforward11 · 16/07/2026 09:02

I hope you’re doing ok. Please take steps to leave this man.

Powerbungalow · 16/07/2026 09:21

BudeJellylegs · 16/07/2026 00:48

Because when England plays, he is absolutely awful to be around

Only when England play?

I bet you don't notice when he's being like this at other times. Start making plans.

Victorius19 · 16/07/2026 09:29

Dear God, is this for real? He's kicking off over a game?

Time to sort your life out today, and leave him in the pond scum where he belongs.

Nonsense. You can drive straight through the living room wall and blame him.

Asmileisworthathousandwords · 16/07/2026 09:36

It really does bring out the worst in so many people.
It almost makes me appreciate that my 27 year old son doesn't understand football and is happy in his own private bubble.
My ex however didn't need an excuse to treat me like rubbish. I still hear his words in my head telling me how worthless I am.

My husband loves football and we watched the match together, he was quietly disappointed like a normal grown up and remained a sane, kind and polite husband. That's how it should be.

Yes this. I left my husband to watch it as I am not a massive fan and he & the kids are really tense during the games so it doesn’t feel fun to watch together. Came down as it finished and we got a very disappointed child to bed each. His verdict after “Oh well. In the end the better side won and once the kids are less tired they’ll cheer up. It’s better than England played through most of my childhood and top 4 is hardly terrible” Then we watched something else on TV with a drink for an hour and went to bed. The idea that someone (even if invested in the result) would throw their partner out of the house over a comment on a football result is just insane and I can’t believe anyone is suggesting it’s ok. It’s absolutely abusive and if he can’t recognise that or doesn’t care then I’d join the LTB comments. It’s highly unlikely this will be the only reason he finds to behave this way.

Buscobel · 16/07/2026 09:50

You may love him OP, but it’s not reciprocated if he’s violent and abusive because a bunch of men he doesn’t know and will never meet, lost a game.

Whosthetabbynow · 16/07/2026 09:54

Everyone is disappointed today but it’s taking it to the next level to chuck someone out of the house. I’m guessing him and alcohol don’t mix. I’m guessing he always gets nasty after a drink.

FWC2026 · 16/07/2026 10:28

TheReflectiveQualityofGlass · 16/07/2026 03:05

NO! Don’t you dare blame her for ‘poking the bear’!

The bear is a grown man, not a toddler. He should be able to regulate himself. Its his responsibility to not be an abusive prick.

I wasn't blaming her.

i said she needs to leave him.

She knows he's abusive when he's watching the football (twat). Saying she was glad his team lost wasn't a sensible thing to do, leaving the twat is.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/07/2026 10:28

You know none of that is ok yes? I hope you are safe and get the courage t leave as treading on eggshells every time there is an international match is not right.

Mr Monkey had been getting frustrated trying to sort out his very flaky friends to all be in one place to watch the final on Sunday if England had won last night - this morning I said "oh well, cheer up, at least you are spared from organising Sunday now" he just laughed ruefully. That is a normal reaction.

XelaM · 16/07/2026 01:07

I wouldn't want to be around someone who said that to me tonight, bit I would have been the one to leave..

Oh here you are again.
Yet again making excuses for abusive men.
