I love my partner, but when England plays he turns into an absolute arsehole. I told him tonight that I’m glad they’re out for this reason. He’s kicked me out of the house, and I’m currently sat in my car. Can’t drive anywhere cos I’ve had a couple of G&Ts

Op please do whatever you need to do to keep yourself safe.

Despite some of the comments here, what he has done is not ok and it is not your fault.

Please if you feel able reach out to an organisation such as Women’s Aid and talk this through them

Unfortunately this type of behaviour is all to common.

It's ridiculous to claim that the @OP was being unkind: she was expressing relief that her ordeal was about to come to an end.

The only saving grace is that international games are not as frequent as league games.

New study links Old Firm games to domestic abuse

St Andrews University research claims to have found "firm evidence" of a link between domestic violence and games between Rangers and Celtic.

There are significant increases in rates of domestic violence when the England football team play - much higher if they lose but higher even if they win. You are not alone in this OP. I am sorry. I would tell him when things calm down that in future ue needs to go out to the pub or elsewhere to watch the football.

avilsdedvocate · 16/07/2026 02:04

Taxi, friend, bus, train, walk. Just get out of there. Get advice. Its not your fault and its horrifying that mn mods havent deleted the vile victim blaming comments. They dont change. I understand you love him but this isnt how relationships work. You're at risk. Go now

AlgaeDreams · 16/07/2026 02:07

Was he happy with you when we were winning? Were you happy with him? I'm not sure what your domestic set up is, but it sounds like time to call it quits. Completely dysfunctional. What happens now? Are you locked in this dramatic cycle - both of you. Up and down, falling out, making up?

This isn’t the slam dunk you think it is. On the contrary, sounds like the DD needs to get out more.

Trolling? Or just witless?

Yes, moderate your speech to appease your abuser. Keep him happy lest he explodes. If you don’t, you’re asking for it…

RigsbysCat · 16/07/2026 02:24

So it's all the OP's fault 🙄.

Give your head a wobble, it's a bunch of blokes kicking a ball around. Literally no excuse to mistreat someone

strictly speaking they have one more match ?

that said hope all goes well op.

Iyamnotayam · 16/07/2026 02:38

I'm sorry to say it, but your partner is abusive. When you're sober, go back through your relationship with a fine tooth comb, and see what other red flags there are.

It may be worth contacting a domestic abuse support line tomorrow so you can prepare a safety plan for when you're ready to leave him.

LouiseMadetheBestBroccoliPasta · 16/07/2026 02:45

So many abuser apologists on this thread. It's disgusting

NO! Don’t you dare blame her for ‘poking the bear’!

The bear is a grown man, not a toddler. He should be able to regulate himself. Its his responsibility to not be an abusive prick.

I wouldn't want to be around someone who said that to me tonight, bit I would have been the one to leave..

I'm glad they're out.

mamakoukla · 16/07/2026 03:18

@BudeJellylegs sadly, England will play many games in the future. While you do state that you love him, is this the future you want for yourself? I hope you’re safe and this evening remains uneventful

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/07/2026 03:40

BudeJellylegs · 16/07/2026 00:26

Well, quite. I’d rather be in the car than anywhere near him, to be fair.

OP, your spouse is abusive.

Let this be that moment where you realise this is abuse and you separate.

Of course a victim of dv is never asking for it. Never. I’m just saying, if he is drunk and violent, it is better not to antagonize him. That’s just common sense.

Zanatdy · 16/07/2026 04:04

If I hadn’t have left my ex for other reasons, football would have driven me away. Not England, but bloody Arsenal. Even now after being separated for 15yrs I still received tens of messages about them winning the league. His moods were around how they played, the language was terrible. Forget i’ve been up with kids all night, he wouldn’t keep the volume down when they were playing, so selfish. My now adult son also loves football, but he does not behave like that. Largely because I would have told him to wind his neck in, where his mother used to joke how awful he was around football. God i’m so glad I no longer have to endure that.

Wordsmithery · 16/07/2026 04:15

It's shocking that he turns into an arsehole. And it's outrageous that he thinks it's ok to KICK YOU OUT OF YOUR HOME. What human being does that?
Please, OP, gather up your stuff as soon as it's safe and leave.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 16/07/2026 06:01

Im not sure you do have a perfect gent. What do you mean he kicked you out. Becuase surely you just say ‘no, don’t be a nob’ then walk to your room. Why did you actually leave? Do you mean he physically removed you? Surely that’s a wake up call if so?
