Was chatting to a guy online who admitted he'd date younger women - feel sick

Chatted to an online guy who seemed nice. 51 years old. Not a looker, but seemed ok.
I asked why his age range for women was 21 to 44 as I assumed he'd made a mistake. He said he wouldn't rule out any age if there was a connection. His daughter is 27 and I asked if he'd date a 28 year old (for instance). He said yes.

I accept that we were just chatting but this gave me the creeps. I also appreciate that some people do have big age gaps but does anyone else find this odd?

Yuck, I would find this very off putting.

My husband’s uncle at 58 found himself a 26 year old on a Russian brides site. He was very defensive about their age gap telling everyone they just fell in love and had so much in common.
He had to choose who to start chatting to in the first place though and I’d be astonished if those sites had many almost pensioner babushkas trying their luck!
He did lose his adult children and did have another baby when he was 62 but he was honestly just proud and smug. They don’t care what we think.

Why would they care? It's their life. Have you considered that they might actually be happy or are you too busy judging what other consenting adults do?

Yuk. Stupid, deluded, pervy twat.

It's not odd.

Men have very restricted prospects on dating apps and receive very few matches. A man swiping right on every single profile may only receive 1 or 2 matches a month. A small percentage of those matches will engage in a conversation. A very tiny percentage of those matches will want to meet up for a date.

This is why men generally don't impose any restrictions on dating apps. They need to be open minded and willing to meet all kinds of people, otherwise they won't have any dates at all.

Sorry but I think the pearl clutching about age gaps on here can be a bit much at times.

As long as there isn't a power imbalance, it's okay to want to date a different age as long as you're a consenting adult, I think over 20. 20 is not a child.

I think people forget that some women do like older men and don't have daddy issues in their 20s. It's not on to infantalise women who can make their own decisions.

Yes some older men are grim, especially if they have red pill attitudes. But I don't believe everything is just plain wrong. People have different tastes and that is okay as long as it is legal and above board.

I'm sure I'll get jumped on for that but not everyone in their 20s is a silly little girl. People have their own autonomy and it's up to them who they date.

I’m surprised you’re surprised by this.

Would he be happy with a 51 year old trying to date his daughter? He sounds like a creep who will always be wanting a younger, better looking model.

Jb197806 · 03/07/2026 17:39

Would this be an issue if it was a woman saying this about younger men or would you wish them good luck. Personally if I was single I would always prefer a woman around my age but would never rule anything out if there was a connection.

The wife as been to watch male strippers on girlie nights out these are obviously men at least 20 years her junior and she certainly gets excited by them as do women much older than her. Are they all creepy?

There's a big old influx of MRAs today isn't there? Wonder what stirred their pot.

Bringemout · 03/07/2026 18:32

Dh told me about the half your age plus 7 thing this morning, he’s just discovered it and was horrified, I think there are still men out there who think 21 yr olds are basically kids. Not many though. He was like aside from it being creepy the chances of a man achieving that can’t be that high. Very aspirational to think a 20 something would be into 50yr olds men. I thought men in their 30’s were ANCIENT at that age.

I mean, feeling sick is a bit melodramatic. Fine to be put off but it’s not exactly shocking or especially unusual for man to be attracted to someone 20 years younger. I’d find him off-putting and I’d be unmatching him, but a 28-year-old is a grown woman. He’s not proposing to groom a teenager. I’d roll my eyes and move on, not ‘feel sick’ and start a Mumsnet thread about it.

I know its so dramatic and immature.

Except he set his upper limit several years younger than himself ergo losing all women aged 45-55 from his pool which makes the above complete nonsense , doesn't it?

Dgll · 05/07/2026 09:29

I think a lot of men and women are a bit unaware of the sexual preferences of the opposite sex. Online dating highlights these differences and misunderstandings.

Eww yeah, a 51 year old should absolutely not be looking at 21 year olds as potential dates. And on what planet do they think they would be interested anyway?! I’m 35 and I wouldn’t consider someone over 50 myself. It’s absolutely grim.

I wouldn't date anyone old enough to be my parent or young enough to be my child (-16). Everyone else is fair game 🤪
