Not in the UK there aren’t. I defy you to find one and post the details on here.

Dogs trust have 5 dogs under 6 months on their website and say that they have many more dogs who aren’t on the website.

I see puppies in rescue quite often, I worked in rescue and it's common for litters to be handed in and mum too.

littlebilliie · 16/02/2025 09:54

I would consider rescue

https://www.manytearsrescue.org/displaymtarr_dog.php?id=43166

They have many young dogs and they take the pups from the puppy farms which haven't been sold.

HellofromJohnCraven · 16/02/2025 10:08

To all those saying rescue, best of luck with that. We spent 2 years trying to find a suitable dog to adopt . But having children was a barrier ti many.
We bought a Westie puppy eventually. Good with dogs, people, kids and a hardy little breed.

I asked for a bank transfer but she's saying cash (who carries £500?)

Well you can draw it out of the bank can’t you?

This is something I would raise with RSPCA, as an experienced dog handler. This sounds like these dogs might have generic issues and the breeders are desperate for money to get them vet checked, or make sure they are sold.

This is a massive red flag.

I would consider adopting from places such as - 8 Below Husky Rescue (they have some beautiful huskies in need of adopting! They all come neutered, jabbed, flea&worm tableted, trained etc. Some of them are a few months old to a few years old), Hope Rescue (a place here in Wales) - They've just had a massive influx of abandoned puppies, golden retrievers, labs, Damns (pregnant dogs) etc...if you're up for travelling a bit! 29 dogs dumped over 2 weeks.

I also understand wanting a puppy and making sure they are from a verified breeder. You have lots of options, but this does sound like a massive red flag.

I've already reported a backstreet breeder to the RSPCA a few weeks ago, after rescuing alleged pure-bred, Siberian Huskies from them. I have one of them which my female GSDxHusky x 2 are mothering him no end and treating him like their little golden balls 😅. Picture for tax (Rocket-Raccoon).

They are asking for part cash payment on the day of viewing puppy for the first time..

The reason for a breed is great with kids, supposedly calm, low allergy etc.,

I sent an email and her reply is this...

'I’m not sure where this has all come from but I asked for cash on viewing day and it’s you who has asked to pay by bank transfer so I’ve asked for it to be done before you come. If you’re not happy to part with money beforehand then cash on the day is my normal protocol after your appointment and cash for collection otherwise bank transfer is to be done prior to both arrivals.

I’m not sure what you’ve been reading at this time of night but I think you’ve driven yourself into panic mode, I’m a 5* licensed reputable breeder as you can clearly see from my Facebook page and reviews and I won’t be tarred with the same brush as whoever you’ve dealt with in the past.

I’ve operated the same protocols for the last 8 years and I’ve never had anyone dispute the way I work. Firstly there are lots of parts of paperwork to the contract, you have the first part after viewing day which is your holding deposit form and then contract of sale you when you collect. And no I don’t want you taking your puppy to the vets within 72 hours- firstly vets are places where people take poorly animals so you can pick up all sorts of germs, secondly you are having a full documented and signed health report from a vet upon collection and lastly it already states in my contract that if anything is found which deems your puppy unsuitable to be a family pet then you will have a full refund. You will be visiting your vets at 10 weeks for second vaccination and further check up once your puppy is more settled so you do not need to take them to the vets prior to this.

I’ll send photos of my paperwork tomorrow at some point when I’ve had chance to print.'

Any thoughts??

Omg this is awful. Absolutely no reputable breeder would tell you not to take them to the vets! No reputable breeder makes you sign a contract, either. As I said in my previous post as an experienced dog handler - Report them to the RSPCA.

They are asking for cash so they cannot be traced and you cannot raise it with your bank as potential fraud and for the payment to be recalled. Cash in hand doesn't leave a paper trail! It also means if they are receiving benefits, then large amounts of money will not be flagged to the DWP (it's my job to know this before anyone argues.) - It also means avoiding paying tax.

Run for the hills, OP!

Lots of posts saying rescues don't have puppies - Yes. Yes they do! Puppy breeders are going boom and bust because nobody can afford them in a CoL crisis, or they didn't realise how much work these puppies are.

Forgot to add - Facebook doesn't allow for the sale of puppies. It's against their rules and i think the law, or any social media platforms to allow this anymore. Any type of animal.

I totally agree, they need a very active outdoor life not one confined to a house and garden.

SnoopysHoose · 16/02/2025 22:42

@MustWeDoThis
I suggested Hope upthread and mentioned the influx of dumped ex breeder int he last two weeks. Too often everyone goes the easy route and only approach the 'big' rescues, lots of brilliant small rescues out there.
Your wee raccoon is gorgeous, I have a husky x spaniel, amazing boy

Mervyco · 17/02/2025 07:46

There are Cavapoos and Cavadoodles. It depands on which is the sire. I have forgotten which way it goes

Mervyco · 17/02/2025 07:51

On Tuesday we are getting a second Mini Schnauzer. It comes from Cape Town Schnauzer Rescue and is in good health having been checked by them. They also check us out.
Barkley came from a breeder. We could have been a Korean Restaurant for all she knew, or cared. And he was riddled with parasite when we got him. When we complained to the breeder, our number was blocked.
Get a breed rescue is my advice

They're just called different things depending where you live, that's all. In the US they have groodles. We call them golden doodles in UK.

Agree - and there are many rescues who will rehome to families with children, depending on the requirements of the dog.

OP (or anyone else interested in adopting), if you're on facebook please consider having a look at the following groups:

  • Paw Help UK - Foster And Adopt - Urgent & Overlooked Dogs
  • Save a Paw UK
  • Help4paws UK & overseas
  • UK Chihuahuas And Toy Breeds For Rehoming (some of these rescues will also have medium/larger breeds if that's what you're looking for)
  • Foal Farm Animal Rescue

I thought she wouldn't - and if her position is backed up by a written or verbal contract which stated your reserve payment is non-refundable, it's no surprise unfortunately. Chalk it up to experience OP - at least you didn't give her another £2,300.

Hdjdb42 · 17/02/2025 13:17

They normally keep the deposit if you cancel.

Catpuss66 · 17/02/2025 13:49

I would name & shame her for not returning your deposit.

A deposit is a holding fee the buyer pays to hold the dog.

OP has changed her mind and the deposit should not be refundable. However if OP can show the breeder is unreasonable with the terms of the contract, there may be leeway.

@Itsfiiiine if pet plan do insure for the first 4 weeks - why on earth would she not want that for us??

I dont know if they do or dont - but she says "free"

This is exactly why breeders take a deposit, because people change their minds.

Rescues get messed around a ridiculous amount but are usually bound by not being able to take a non refundable deposit to cover the pre adoption vet checking at least before someone changes their mind. The pre adoption vet check then needs completed for the next person who messes around too.

You should have read the terms and conditions before handing over any money.

Pet plan offer discounted 4 weeks to charities and breeders. This is passed on to the adopter, who can register during the "free to them" 4 week insurance or not as they will usually have their own in place before collecting their new pet. Pet plan charges the charity (or breeder) based on the registration details from the paperwork provided, they may give additional discount if a full policy is taken out as a result depending on the agreement with the charity. This is the case for some.

Not all charities offer this and certainly not all breeders, they would advise you to have a policy ready to start on collection date. Personally I advise to have it start two weeks before so it is in full effect on collection date.

I checked when OP posted this and it's still free.

This is the most suss thing to me as she has no legitimate reason not to offer it, so there must a less honest reason why she isn't.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 17/02/2025 14:35

you can try arguing that the £200 was a holding fee and you no longer wishing to have a puppy held for you, so she can release the puppy to the next on her waiting list and return your money to you.
