I've never seen 'cavapoo' in my life. But it seems to be a UK thing to just write 'poo' and not poodle. I cannot imagine anyone using such (imo) unsavoury terms where I am. It would be cavapoodle or cavoodle. Always with the 'oodle' at the end. 'poo' would not be left on the end like that.

I know this is often very difficult for Americans to understand. But not all countries are exactly the same as yours. HTH.

Unsavoury terms? 😂 Awww do you struggle with the word poo? Here's something you might not like to admit... we all poo 💩

How many staff at a pound do you know that leave their duties at the pound and go home with you and check your home out. Its a pound. A shelter. Not a designer breeder.

Ours did -- for a cat adoption, and even for a guinea pig. Also, they tend not to be called "the pound" but a rescue or shelter. I do think you're writing about a different country's customs and finding they don't translate to the UK.

Our guinea pig rescue did a home check.

My response was to the no one carries cash comment. Personally I'm completely against buying puppies at all, rescue all the way.

I've seen the effect of puppy farmers first hand. On a large scale. The devasting effects on the discarded mothers, the health issues of over bred pups, the boxes of dumped pups that are sold or can't be sold or that died from neglect. Have seen the same and worse with kitten farming.

@fandangored wants a cavapoo though so she can withdraw the cash to fund it. Not like she doesn't know there are thousands of dogs needing homes.

I am totally with you on this. Personally I would ban ALL online puppy/kitten/pet ads except for accredited registered rescue centres.
Puppy farmers and kitten farmers are the scum of the earth. I just wish people wouldn't go online to buy animals, they are enabling terrible animal abuse.

Any reputable breeder gives the puppy home to the new owner at 10-12 weeks. That's enough of a red flag and I'd run a mile.

I would actually argue - 8 weeks as they have the first, and most important, socialisation window between 8 and 12 weeks if memory serves me right. When we got Rosie, I read up on that and it felt important to line up puppy classes asap (before you get the puppy even) so that they would start at about 8-9 weeks. I had to call several puppy trainers to find out who would have the appropriate start date, luckily (and as common sense dictates) the start dates spread out among trainers. That first set of puppy classes is normally indoors as no puppies at that age would be fully vaccinated to step on the ground outside. You also need to carry them around town/village in your arms so they can meet different people. This was a time in my life when I was incredibly popular - everybody wanted to say hello (well, it wasn’t me who was popular obviously 😀)

I had to get a buggy for mine as she was too big to carry... much to my partner's horror 😆

Do you wash your hair with shampoodle?

(Sorry, that was childish but couldn’t resist.)

We got a dog sling for our current Weimaraner. She weighed a ton in it 😳

I couldn't do that to my back 😂 My pup was given the lepto 4 vax so she wasn't allowed on the floor for a bit longer than usual and by then I practically had to shoehorn her into the buggy and the wheels were practically buckling 🙈😂

I couldn’t have carried her. My husband got the short straw. 😂

Though so :(

My son has been waiting ages poor thing.. looking for a good puppy breeder has been a nightmare!!

Definitely do not hand over money. I am a licensed breeder and any reputable breeder should be licensed with the council. Puppies should be fully health checked via a vet before leaving at roughly 8~12 weeks old.
viewings are normally from 4 weeks old where any good breeder would ask you to pay a deposit then & the remainder on collecting your puppy. The kennel club website and champdogs is good for finding reputable breeders. Also check parents are health tested for health conditions related to the breed.

Farmwifefarmlife · 15/02/2025 21:27

fandangored · 13/02/2025 16:39

The breeder reply:

I tried to call you a little while ago to have a chat, all the parents health certificates will be ready for viewing day I’m not going to keep sending you details as there needs to be a level of trust here. Also I am travelling to Guildford on the 23rd for my annual heart testing with the BVA for all of my girls.

Petplan do not offer 4 weeks free insurance anymore they stopped this back in October last year.

Everything is as promised in my initial email to you before you paid your pre reserve fee.

(I do get the feeling she has been messed around hence tone)

Agria and petplan still offer insurance she is trying to avoid being picked up by the tax man and the insurance companies now give them Puppy sale details. I would definitely be avoiding. All health testing should be available to view before any money changes hands. Cavaliers suffer with quite a few.

I am NOT proceeding and am trying to get £200 back from my bank..

I have realised from talking to her, she has been awful, rushing things along and applying pressure tactics.

I also realise 10 mummy Cavs is FAR too many. She's only just sent address on her 'contract' it looks crappy and I don't believe she even lives there...

It's all not stacking up and I can't believe I have paid any money... I have also showed my kids the video of the puppy they are getting.. very disappointing..

Thank you all for some excellent advice here. I have read each and everyone and appreciate it massively. I am a first time owner and understand I need to research way more!!

Please report her. Those poor animals could be living in hell. I hope you get your money back also.

My heart breaks for the poodle breed. I grew up with a rescue one and there are amazing, intelligent and elegant dogs. I wish people would just stop subsidising this puppy trade. I’ve also seen some pretty bad injuries inflicted by a cockerpoo to someone’s calf, they are not invincible and should not be interbred in the way they are as inheriting health and behavioural issues.
Rescue wise, my goodness there’s hundreds of options. I see that potential owners justify their decision by quickly googling their nearest rescue and then saying ‘look it’s full of Akita’s’. That’s like going to only one shop for that ‘elusive outfit’.
It’s not true that all rescues don’t rehome to families, you only have to watch The Doghouse to see that’s not the case. And if you live in a flat, bluntly it’s not ideal to have a dog unless it’s a service dog or you are particularly dedicated to training.
I do understand that for some a puppy is the only answer but for the love of god please have some originality and look at other non poodle ones.
I honestly don’t think you can a genuine dog lover and support this trade.

You've made quite a few sweeping statements there!

So we now have poodle crosses that are fast becoming the next XL bullies do we? EVERY dog has the potential to attack - you'll probably find a story of somebody being bitten by every pure breed if you look hard enough... even poodles!

I actually made the comment about mainly unsuitable dogs for families with young children being in shelters. It's not just my local shelter either... it's most of them. Of course there will be better suited dogs as well.. but these ones are snapped up quickly. I still wouldn't recommend them though... nobody truly knows the past history of a dog like this and often nothing about it's health.

"Adopt don't shop" types really grind my gears. Always pointing the finger at the wrong people for others poor choices/selfishness and expecting them to graciously mop up their mess.

Yes, of course there are dogs in shelters due to owners change of circumstances, through no fault of their own but the majority are there as some idiot bought an unsuitable dog... hence we're seeing the same large or powerful breeds in there over and over again. I certainly won't be made to feel guilty and pay the price for these morons.

I'm not sure why bank transfer on the day isn't an option. The days of having to wait for money to clear are well gone.

i have accounts in 2 different banks.
An online transfer between them is not instantaneous.

I have a banking app and payments between my own accounts and to other people’s accounts is immediate. I sold my son’s car on eBay and the buyer turned up, had a test drive, and transferred the cash app to app and drove away with his new car. Simple! Otherwise you could use PayPal? But I’d just go and get the £500 from a cash point!

I haven't read all the replies as I'm on my way to a hospital appointment but if you have an address, please report this breeder to the RSPCA and also the local authority. If she is all above board she won't mind and nothing will happen but you could be saving poor dogs being overbread in dreadful conditions and prevent other people being scammed.
