The fact she wasn’t clear about how many of them are bitches is a disgrace and tells you all you need to know.

Good breeders have no more than one breeding bitch at any one time. No more than one litter a year (usually one every 2-3 years tbh).

Why are you still engaging with her? As I said on my first post, ten pages ago, she’s clearly a puppy farmer.

Because she’s clearly not listening. I think we’re all wasting our time here. She isn’t going to listen anyway. I’m unfollowing now and suggest others do the same.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/02/2025 12:58

The more you post, the more we know you are buying from a puppy farm.

Do you know her address yet...

whynotwhatknot · 14/02/2025 13:04

10! she running a farm-report dont bloody buy from her

fandangored · 14/02/2025 13:04

I am NOT proceeding and am trying to get £200 back from my bank..

I have realised from talking to her, she has been awful, rushing things along and applying pressure tactics.

I also realise 10 mummy Cavs is FAR too many. She's only just sent address on her 'contract' it looks crappy and I don't believe she even lives there...

It's all not stacking up and I can't believe I have paid any money... I have also showed my kids the video of the puppy they are getting.. very disappointing..

Thank you all for some excellent advice here. I have read each and everyone and appreciate it massively. I am a first time owner and understand I need to research way more!!

as I suggested before, put a thread up in the ' dog house ' pages and ask
I am sure you will be given suggested breeds - which you can look up on Google etc. and then once the breed has been decided upon, it is very likely someone will suggest where to buy from.
Be prepared to be added to a waiting list.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/02/2025 13:24

p.s. I once was a 1st time dog owner, and chose a .....
rottweiller !!!

I did my research and got a good one from a good breeder.

However one ' breeder ' offered me one of their dogs there and then on the phone without knowing anything about me and without me meeting the puppy - I did go and meet the puppy and he was willing to sell me a male puppy. So wrong.

The breeder I did choose my puppy from interviewed me on the phone, then in person before she agreed to allow me to reserve one of her puppies and invited me back one Sunday so I could meet the father dog with his owner.

notatinydancer · 14/02/2025 13:26

Seriously @fandangored find a rescue dog.

A reputable one will match a dog to your family.

ImagineRainbows · 14/02/2025 13:53

@OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon Haha our first ever dog was also a Rottie! A 6 month old male rescue. We naively thought we were the perfect home for him as he had fear aggression with males and we are a lesbian couple.

Wow did we have to learn fast! I was on the phone to behaviourists within 2 hours of bringing him home begging for help. Thankfully it all worked out and he was an amazing dog.

Lost him 2 years ago now and miss him so much.

Very good decision OP. It's quite likely you won't be able to get your money back, but if so, just chalk it up to experience - you've had a lucky escape and not lined this suspect breeder's pocket with a further £2,300. That's a win in my book! 😊

BumpandBounce · 14/02/2025 14:25

@fandangored Just to clarify something about health checks because you sound a bit confused. You don’t DNA test for hip and elbow scores.

Hip and elbow scores are done by sedating the dog and taking x-rays of its limbs. Then you get a report with the scoring.

DNA tests usually involve blood or saliva samples being sent to a lab to test for any hereditary genetic conditions.

I’m glad you’re not going ahead. If it makes you feel any better, I almost bought an expensive Cavador several years ago but thankfully realised that it was a complete rip off. Went back to the drawing board, did lots of research, joined some online breed groups, and found a fabulous Labrador stud owner who provided a list of expected litters from her boys. It was a long process, over a year, but worth the effort.

mumtoababygirl · 14/02/2025 14:31

I knew it would be a -poo breeder as soon as I read your OP. Breeding these dogs is unethical and all about money, they charge a fortune for them and anyone buying them is gullible and ridiculous. I’ve never met a “calm” one! I’ve known loads and they’re actually all very anxious dogs. Look up all the worst traits from both breeds as that’s what you could end up with.

My one is the calmest dog in the world... you must meet her 😂 She does get a little excited at the start of her walks (bit like me on a rare night out) but is very laid back and gentle around the house.

Many of the poodle retriever crosses are actually used as therapy dogs so they can't all be neurotic and anxious.

oh my Goodness..TEN breeding bitches?
That’s bloody industrial.

She wanted CASH?

HMRC might be interested.

My Whippet I have now, she was handled gently from day one of being born

Loves people, is a therapy dog, People say how calm and gentle she is .

Ideally you want a one off litter bred by someone who wants to perpetuate their line - one litter and that’s it, and who raise pups in their house with all household noises - these people are very fussy about where their pups go ( I’m still in almost daily contact with person who bred mine via what’s app as we chat as each other’s dogs!

Personally I think it should be illegal to profit from the sale of animals. If they made it illegal they would shut down the puppy farming industry overnight.

It’s precisely because there is so much money to be made that puppy farming is so rife. And I’m not talking about someone breeding once from the family dog. I’m talking about these people who have ten plus dogs and breed multiple of them at once. there’s a bloke who lives round by me who breeds cockerpoos and who even takes them for walks and treats them as family pets. Doesn’t change the fact that last time I saw him he told me he currently had two litters of puppies, three females in season and one pregnant bitch, and all in all he currently had 30 dogs which included 11 puppies all of which were being sold for £1800.

The puppy farmers who keep their dogs in a tray lot and rent a house for the purposes of selling them.

The overseas so called rescue industry which is rife with people who breed puppies and then import them as “rescues.”

You could get rid of all of that if you just tightened the law to say that no-one can profit from selling their animals.

Animals are not and should never be commodities.

I agree with you. I have heard breeders mention that their last litter paid for their new kitchen! No wonder they plan out several litters a year.

I'm not sure a new kitchen would tempt me to raise a litter of puppies! If done properly you practically have no life for 2 months! I have nothing but respect for my breeder as I couldn't have dealt with x9 of my puppy 🙈 I'd happily have paid towards her kitchen and don't care if I actually did 😂

Strawberrypicnic · 14/02/2025 16:39

Just get a rescue greyhound that's been assessed as being suitable with kids

I’m sure your breeder would say that as she did things properly, she could really do with that new kitchen but it won’t be the puppies that pay for it 😂

When the puppies were about 5 weeks old she was all enthusiastic about a second and final litter the following year. We all met up for the pups first birthday and I asked her husband if they were still planning another litter. He gave me the death stare 😂

Diddlyumptious · 14/02/2025 17:57

Is the UK? registered breeders? We bred dogs to me a massive red flag. Count your losses and run. Good luck

tommyhoundmum · 14/02/2025 18:14

We always go to see and then choose a puppy and leave a deposit. Final payment to be paid on collection

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 14/02/2025 18:31

Good final decision, OP. Please forward any details to HMRC to make sure this “breeder” is paying correct tax.

Evan456 · 14/02/2025 18:36

No definitely not

Timble · 14/02/2025 18:42

My sister in law has two cavapoos. Gorgeous but absolutely mental. My rescue on the other hand is the most relaxed sweetest crossbreed. Rescues get puppies too.

LandSharksAnonymous · 13/02/2025 08:00

I’d also add that Katy Price could get a 5* licence if she tried - it’s not hard. In fact, it’s the bare sodding minimum anyone breeding should do - gloating about it, or claiming it’s a mark of a good breeder, is just embarrassing.

Actually it is hard, they come and inspect your premises and want years of accounts and isolation areas and inspection of the dogs and where they live etc food and where it’s prepared

Evan456 · 14/02/2025 18:47

I would never take a deposit as it obligates people, I’d prefer them to be able to change their mind without any consequences
