Does your partner always lock the bathroom door?

My partner locks the bathroom door. Always.

Now, I completely understand this if other people are in the house, but even when it's just the two of us he has the lock on, whether showering, bathing or using the toilet.

I find this a bit weird, but fine, whatever. He tells me he doesn't know why he does it, but always has. Says he even does it when he's in on his own.

I know this is true because three times in the last few years he's ended up locked in various toilets 😅 Once in our house, when handle broke and I came home to him trying to remove it from the inside using nail files, scissors and a toothbrush, once after staying at a mates house (thankfully had his phone on him this time as his mate had left for work and hadn't told him the lock was broken) and once, most embarrassingly, at a hotel on a work trip.

Does anyone else's partner do this? And if so why?

To get a few obvious things out of the way...

  • He's not texting another woman in there - there's no wifi or mobile signal in our downstairs loo so he rarely, if ever, takes his phone with him.
  • He's not watching porn/wanking - He's quite welcome to do that in much more comfortable places than the bathroom and as above, no internet.

He unfortunately suffers from Crohn's, which means he can be in the bathroom a lot and it isn't exactly a pleasant experience. He says he doesn't think the two things are related, but I guess if that's a habit he's gotten into over the years, that could be it?

This is super light-hearted obviously, but I'm curious if anyone has experienced similar!

I always lock the door. It's a reflex. Leave him in peace!

Ditto. I don't bother if I'm alone in the house, but if everyone else is around I have no interest in being walked in on while I'm having a poo thanks!

ohyesido · 07/11/2024 18:35

He's very unfortunate for that to happen three times.

I lock the door when I'm using the toilet, and when I'm having an "everything" shower because I don't want anyone nipping in for a wee while I'm doing my ablutions.

Hardtobepositivesometimes · 07/11/2024 18:36

I don't understand what the problem is with him locking the bathroom door.
I also don't understand why you are happy he watches porn.

NoraLuka · 07/11/2024 18:37

I always lock the door, I can’t relax otherwise. DP doesn’t bother if it’s just me and him at home but I always know when he’s in there and don’t go in.

Same here

GivingUpFinally · 07/11/2024 18:40

I never ever lock the door. If a door is closed in ours, we always knock.

Both dh and I float in and out of the bathroom when we're showering or bathing. Often to continue a conversation or pass on info. Not always but a few times a year.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/11/2024 18:40

Bloody hell the poor guy has crohns and you’re wondering why he wants to have a bit of peace on the loo and not want anyone to walk in. You say it’s lighthearted but it obviously puzzles you. I have no idea why you’d be puzzled. Why do you think bathroom doors have locks? Because people want some privacy.

Lund · 07/11/2024 18:40

I’m on my own in the house - I’m having a bath and I’ve locked the door! It’s just a habit I guess.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 07/11/2024 18:41

nope, the door to our bathroom does not even have a lock, and as soon as anyone goes in, the cat wants to come in (frosted glass - you can see), so you have to open it anyway

pretzel1212 · 07/11/2024 18:46

Ours doesn't have a lock but when I was suffering with a bowel issues I would def have locked it if I could have. Instead I just had to keep telling DH to not disturb me, I'm gonna be a while Blush

Futurethinking2026 · 07/11/2024 18:46

Another crohnie here, always lock the door if there is any sign of it being poo visit. Happy for DH to wander in whilst in the shower for example but absolute no to anyone walking in on those toilet trips. Can’t really understand why you are evening thinking about this.

mamajong · 07/11/2024 18:47

I always lock the door, even when home alone. It's habit/peace of mind.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 07/11/2024 18:48

I lock the door when I have a bath because it's in the main bathroom that one of my sons uses. I don't lock the downstairs loo unless we have visitors. There are no locks on the en suite doors. My husband never locks either of the doors that can be locked.

Growlybear83 · 07/11/2024 18:52

My daughter doesn't even bother shutting the door when she has a poo let alone lock it 😆. I've never locked the door when it's just the three of us at home - we know if the door is shut someone is using the toilet

CadoAvo · 07/11/2024 18:54

Mine shits with the door wide open 🤣

Anononony · 07/11/2024 18:55

I lock for a turd but don't even close it for a wee 🤣 my kids happily shit with the door open, OH is the same as me

Gross!

BookishType · 07/11/2024 18:58

We have no locks on our bathroom doors, so no.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/11/2024 19:02

I lock. DH thinks it's weird but I think privacy in some aspects of your life isn't a bad thing.

Not porn or other men 🙄

That's disgusting

NewGreenDuck · 07/11/2024 19:05

Of course we do! It's the 1 place where I can actually have complete privacy. Why would I want people strolling in?

Boutonnière · 07/11/2024 19:06

I reflexively lock ours and so does my husband - I don’t want to walk in on him and I don’t want him walking in on me. The lock can be opened from outside with a screwdriver in case of emergencies.
