Can you get over bad teeth when potentially dating someone?

I feel terrible and shallow but... I've recently reconnected with someone I used to see a lot when I was younger. Nothing ever materialised but we recently connected on social media. After exchanging a few recent photos.. he sent me one of him smiling and omg his teeth... he's missing a fair few, yellow, crooked and broken...

I always liked him and never recall him having bad teeth... but they're really noticeable and I don't want it to put me off but they do....

Is there anyway getting past bad teeth when you're dating when it's an otherwise really lovely guy who you know would treat you really well?.....

Nope. Means they haven't taken care of themselves or they cannot afford to pay for dental care. Of course they could be rich but anxious around dentists so won't go, but it's unlikely.

TheQueeen · 21/10/2024 17:21

Same with women who have excess fat, they are either too lazy and gluttonous, or can’t afford a tummy tuck

TheQueeen · 21/10/2024 17:22

Could be rich but anxious about the gym

Definitely not. Missing, yellowing and decayed teeth indicate a lack of self care.

Not necessarily true. Google Amelogenesis imperfecta

I googled it.

Found:

Treatment Procedures for Amelogenesis Imperfecta

Common methods for addressing both form and function include dental veneers, full dental crowns, or when existing dentition is unsalvageable, complete dental replacement therapy.

So treat ment is available, toothless boy hasn't got treatment, massive failure of self care.

I don't like the Rylan, whiter than white teeth, but I can't stand crooked, yellowing, missing teeth. I find it so distracting when people are talking, despite trying not to stare. Same as facial moles- even worse with hair coming from them! Yes, I realise some people have medical issues or can't afford treatment. It reminds me of these adverts.

My husband has large, crooked teeth and they don't bother me at all, although I am slightly annoyed his parents didn't get him braces (they did for his brother!). I don't think I could deal with missing and decayed teeth tho as it would hint at bad hygiene 😐

Snowpaw · 21/10/2024 18:38

I had a bf with very poor dental hygiene but I managed to persuade him to visit a dentist and he went on to have some really good restorative work and it really boosted his confidence. I supported him through his nerves and the journey of sorting them out, and he then regularly went to the dentist for checkups that he organised himself after that, and I was really proud of what he had achieved.

I think generally he needed help with a lot of things in his life though, and I felt a bit like he needed support in so many areas, and I didn't want to play a lifetime of a supporting role to someone else. E.g I really had to encourage him to learn to drive, tidy up, do the basics...just it became hard and I broke it off.

But I wish him well and I am hopeful that he is happy in life with his nice teeth now.

I can't have veneers because I grind my teeth. They are unable to stay stuck to my original teeth, no dentist will do it due to the damage it'll cause to the actual tooth.

Complete dental therapy means pulling out all my healthy rooted but yellowed teeth, which damages the bone structure of the face and ongoing pain and costs of a full set of false teeth top and bottom. It would also be thousands to undertake.

Some people need a hard lesson in vanity.

Gettingbysomehow · 21/10/2024 18:43

I absolutely cannot stand poor dental hygiene and awful teeth. I've had some dates ehere they have had such bad breath I've had to cancel thd date and leave.
How can you not know you stink. It shows a complete lack of respect.

Genuine question - why isn't a nightguard or splint suitable for you combined with porcelain veneers?

*

I dated somebody with awful teeth. I tried to ignore it, but I couldn't and persuaded him to see a dentist - the difference once he'd had everything cleaned up and some bridge work was like night and day. It also drastically improved his self esteem.

I wear night guards and have done for over twenty years. I still have the jaw strength of a pitbull (slight exaggeration), and I chew through them in a couple of months. The level of pressure in my bite - I also now have botox in my jaw - is too strong and the veneers will still pop off. The damage of applying veneers will also see me lose enamel and lord knows I have little enough of it as it is.

My teeth are clean and as healthy as I can keep them. There is nothing I can do about the yellow of the dentin or the look of the badly chipped and worn teeth now.

I'm having a re-root canal done tomorrow to try to save one of my front teeth, then they will try to rebuild it but it's costing me over £1k for a single tooth because a normal dentist won't touch it.

Doodar · 21/10/2024 20:13

No way, lack of self care and probably skint.

Doodar · 21/10/2024 20:14

possible drug use too

Same with my friend. Actually the broken Jaw was due to domestic violence, it meant her teeth were ground down and brown on top now because of the grinding and exposure of the underneath, because her jaw is in the wrong position. If she had her jaw fixed there are massive risks because there is nerve damage already and they’d have to break it again to fix it. Because of the instability not only are her teeth continuing to grind down, but she cannot get veneers and the amount of work needed would cost a fortune and would essentially be pointless. She chooses to put her children first, rather than have very risky surgery. That’s why I’m feeling a bit cross by this post. She has a figure and a face that I’m sure would put the majority of you to shame. She doesn’t judge anyone, and neither do I, I’m simply making the valid point that the gluttonous and unhealthy on here who sniff about hygiene, are just as vile to some as someone with bad teeth would be to others, but oh we aren’t allowed to just throw out judgement to fat people, we have to call them curvy (curvy doesn’t mean fat, it means curves in the right places), you see the double standard? Don’t judge other based on appearance. A fat person could well be a lazy mofo who eats fried chicken all day, and doesn’t exercise or it could be due to a number of factors, would most people realistically find an obese person sexually attractive on sight? No, but there is a person in that body who is worthy of love. Many men would find the average size 14 to be considered fat by the way. Who says the person with “bad teeth” is going to find you attractive anyway?

Do you have any idea how much this costs? How many people can afford this as it is not available on the NHS? If you do not have a dental condition you are lucky but your attitude is the same as saying someone overweight or with a facial disfigurement is automatically lacking in self care as they have not paid for a gastric band or plastic surgery. Absolutely ridiculous.

Exactly!

TheQueeen · 21/10/2024 21:03

In fact, overweight people have far more options available at a much cheaper rate, than people with dental issues. Some dental issues simply aren’t due to bad hygiene and are not easily fixed

It's a no from me.

The fact he sent a pic grinning also suggests he now has teeth blindness and doesn't realise or care how bad they have got.

If you know he's a kind and decent man, maybe go on a date and see how you feel.

Sorti · 21/10/2024 23:06

I couldn’t fancy anyone with bad teeth so that would be the end of it.

Pumpkinsoup24 · 21/10/2024 23:23

Imagine if we said we'd never date a fat person cause ....they are all flabby and lumpy and if they've let themselves go like that, imagine what their bits would be like. There would be uproar. Mot people had bad teeth until about a decade ago, we've got so used to these white smiles that anyone else looks apparently awful. There seems to be alot of uneducated people out there who presume yellow teeth mean bad dental habits. Not everyone is able to have implants...sometimes their bone isn't right for it.

Quitelikeit · 21/10/2024 23:28

Absolutely not. There’s just no way I could stick my tongue into the mouth that you describe!

Does he work?

The thought makes me retch I’m afraid

I do sympathise with the poster who explained her reasoning for having bad teeth but I’m sure the nhs would give free false teeth under those circumstances
