Unattractive Hobbies

There's this fake survey image that's been going around about the least attractive hobbies for men to have.

Are videogames are a red flag?
Preferable to taxidermy?

For me, gambling the worst one, as it's not a real hobby— it's something that can ruin your life.

In my experience birders and taxidermists are very good at anatomy and attention to detail 😏

invisiblecat · 23/08/2024 23:57

Surprised that neither golf nor cycling are in that top list.

Still surveys is as surveys does, and we don't really know which demographic they asked, and that can have a considerable effect on results.

Carouselfish · 24/08/2024 00:44

cycling! any man who takes themselves seriously enough to buy fucking lycra.

Just to change the tone a bit, hobbies I have particularly appreciated my partners participating in (but not obsessing over):
Playing hockey or rugby (great legs)
Theatre (introduction to a fun and varied crowd)
Playing most musical instruments but particularly saxophone (it sounds sexy)
Various arts (because a decent drawing, poem or well written letter, etc. is a fantastic keepsake)

Edited: Sorry Carouselfish. Don’t know why I’ve quoted you. Didn’t mean to.

Online trolling is not a hobby! It's just being a dickhead AND a coward. Who wants a partner that is both of those things?

wickerpram · 24/08/2024 07:03

Gaming, gambling and trolling are huge turn offs.
Birding is lovely! I know a hunky, lovely funny, confident man who is into birds. He takes binoculars out when he takes his dog for a walk. Actually any hobby (aside from gaming, gambling or trolling) is attractive. It's worse if they have no hobby...

I agree that it’s not a hobby. It’s as character flaw!

EnterFunnyNameHere · 24/08/2024 10:23

Anyone who thinks online trolling is a "hobby" wouldn't even be a casual acquaintance, let alone anything closer! Imagine actually openly saying "how do I spend my free time? Oh, I really enjoy bullying people - how about you?"

Gaming is often brought up as this big red flag, but it's not for me. So long as its not getting in the way of the relationship I don't care. I'd rather someone who gamed a few hours through the week than someone who disappears for a whole day every weekend to play football or whatever.

I'm currently recruiting, and got a CV yesterday where the guy listed 'Dungeons & Dragons game nights' as his main hobby, then explained the skills he needed for these, such as logistics and planning, leadership, etc.

I mean fair fucks to him for trying but also <shudders>.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 24/08/2024 10:25

all of them would put me off. Gaming really really puts me off. I didn't grow up with this mindset so it's difficult for me to understand why adults want to play games. Especially when it takes time away from family

The thing about gaming is that it can escalate to the point where someone plays for hours and stops doing what they're supposed to. The stereotypical image of the basement dweller puts people off.

But most young men play games, GTA and FIFA (as the most basic and less nerdy ones). Most still have other hobbies. Doesn't have the same stigma in my age group for this reason.

It can also be a lot of fun when children get older and you can do multiplayer family games like Mario. Some of my favourite memories were playing games with my older siblings and friends.

Clearly never planned a D&D campaign yourself then.

Whats wrong with Warhammer and painting mini figs? There’s genuine artistic skill in doing it well.

Not all games are stereotypical Call of Duty type games. There are some beautifully made games with amazing stories out there.

Gambling could be ok if it was an occasional day at the horse races with a few small flutters, or playing the national lottery to a moderate extent, something like that. It doesn't have to mean gambling addiction. Just like an interest in fine wines wouldn't mean he was a raving alcoholic....

Online trolling is the only one that is actually a vice rather than a hobby....

I don't think any of the others are definitely facto unattractive, tho obviously any could become so if done excessively/to the detriment of time spent together.

The figurine collecting thing I probably would look a bit askance at, though I would have a word with myself about my prejudice if he was otherwise attractive.

My friend recently binned a man off for volunteering at polling stations on election day. I thought she was being harsh, but also sort of saw her point. But it's unfair really, as I do believe in democracy.

For me some of the hottest hobbies a bloke could have would be:

Riding big motorbikes
Playing the guitar/singing
Writing poetry (really well)
Political activist in cause I favour.
Speaks languages (that I find sexy) fluently
Reckless and daring explorer
Rescues puppies
Sex (with me)

DrCoconut · 24/08/2024 10:51

@Objectrelations exactly. They are basically saying avoid ND men. My DS loves gaming, collecting figurines, model making etc and although I'm biased he is lovely. But he really struggles with adulting still (it's improving slowly with age) so I could see a serious relationship being an issue for him. Which is sad because he'd really like to meet someone.

Oreosandwich · 24/08/2024 10:52

Ex dp has the most unattractive hobby which is smoking weed. Although for him, it's less of a hobby than a way of life. Every moment of his life is spent smoking, rolling, being stoned, trying to find some, going to meet dealers, waiting, moaning about quantity/quality, reminiscing about past weed that was better, borrowing money, and scheming how to find some weed/money.

It's absolutely exhausting and I would NEVER date another smoker even though I am a very occasional smoker myself.

IOnlyNeedTheSilence · 24/08/2024 10:53

That's not a hobby @Oreosandwich that's an absolutely crippling level of addiction.

There are people that find those qualities attractive! Don't despair for your lovely ds. My ds is similar and I'm sure he'll find an equally nerdy partner to enjoy those things with.

Agree, but he (and others like him) will insist it's a hobby.

Willoo · 24/08/2024 11:03

I’m the gamer in my family. I need to ask DH if he finds it unattractive.

dontforgetme · 24/08/2024 11:08

Golf should be on that list! If oh and myself ever broke up (I hope we don't, I love him dearlyGrin) I would never date a golfer again!

retinolalcohol · 24/08/2024 11:09

I think the problem with gaming is that these games are made to be addictive. I say this as someone who likes games and played hours of RDR2 during lockdown.

It can so easily become all encompassing and upholding the hobby is at the detriment of everything else - including a partner.

I have been with a gamer and it was hard work getting him to want to do anything apart from game.
He was so obsessed that I started to find him unattractive - he became almost child-like in my eyes.

I'm sure there are gamers who can maintain a normal life alongside gaming, but I would never, ever risk it again. Soon as they say they game regularly, I am out

retinolalcohol · 24/08/2024 11:16

Also I'd like to add: men way too into football.

The type that say 'we' won today as though they've signed for Man City personally, and basically cry if they lose/win.

I can't entertain it Grin

BeautyPageantDropout · 24/08/2024 11:21

Cycling is the one for me.

Whizzing about for hours in lycra. Droning on about competitive bikes races.

Go forth and enjoy it to its fullest, but it's such a turn off for me.

BeautyPageantDropout · 24/08/2024 11:22

Gaming is fine unless they spend hours and hours festering whilst pursuing this hobby. Those men always look like they smell of farts and stale popcorn. And they tend to have neck beards.
