Unattractive Hobbies

There's this fake survey image that's been going around about the least attractive hobbies for men to have.

Are videogames are a red flag?
Preferable to taxidermy?

For me, gambling the worst one, as it's not a real hobby— it's something that can ruin your life.

Any grown man who plays video games deserves to be terminally single. Big babies.

I dont mind depending on the time. It's a hobby like any other. I'd probably avoid someone who is being judgmental calling people babies because of a hobby they dont approve or understand.
Id also rather see a man who games sometimes than a sports fanatic that I have to wait for in a car with a cup of warm beverage after his 10th marathon a week and who spends every breathing moment in the gym.

Is online trolling a hobby?

For me the unnatractive is the time spend on it, not the actual hobby. Gambling a no no because it is more of an addiction often. Actually any hobby done excessively that turns into addiction can be unattractive, whether it is sports or art or whatever else.

I remember watching programme about a woman whose husband started doing parachute jumping, and ended up so into it that he spend every weekend out with a mate doing it, and the other free time he was just talking about it all the time or being on the phone with mates who were doing it. A cool hobby if it is not frequent, but it turned into a nightmare. I think they ended up divorcing.

Beekeepingmum · 23/08/2024 19:54

Woohoo Beekeeping isn't on the list!

GhostSpider68 · 23/08/2024 19:56

Bit harsh @ChrissyWaddle What is your idea of a gamer to make you think they deserve to be single and they are babies?

Ponderingwindow · 23/08/2024 19:56

If a man doesn’t play video games, then who am I going to game with?

if he doesn’t collect something, how will he understand my massive Lego collection?

the only problem with video games is when people get into real time online games they can’t pause. Then they are just as bad as the people who just leave the house for hours to play golf or cycle.

what is unattractive is people who can’t find balance between hobbies and responsibilities.

I would be turned off by gambling or online trolling, but I would not consider those hobbies at all. Taxidermy would be a tough one, but if done ethically, I could get over it.

Icedcoffeeforme · 23/08/2024 19:57

I can’t believe gambling and online trolling aren’t at the top! I enjoy playing video games so I wouldn’t mind that at all, or any of the others apart from taxidermy

I wonder what Akela would say if my son said he was going to do online trolling to get his hobbies badge....

Gambling and online trolling aren’t hobbies.

Any hobby is fine, in the right measure. It doesn’t have to appeal to everyone. I’m sure a lot of men would find my hobbies unattractive (not that I care). Different strokes for different folks. You don’t need to insult people with hobbies different to you.

DH games. But he also cycles and watches just about any sport. And does lego. And he reads. And he cooks and he does DIY. He goes walking. I think it’s better to have a diverse range of hobbies but know the limits on your hobbies, that adult life comes first and then you can do your hobbies. I find gaming less annoying than some of his other hobbies. Cycling there’s a lot of planning routes, telling me about routes, telling me about cycling friends, explaining why he needs new pedals. Watching every sport is tedious. But other people will like that stuff and like talking to their partners about it. I don’t find him unattractive with the more tedious (to me) hobbies but there is a limit on how much I can hear about them.

Objectrelations · 23/08/2024 19:59

A lot of these collecting pasttimes are very neurodivergent. My son who has autism does a few of them. He is a lovely, loyal, affectionate person who would do anything for the people he loves.

Gambling can be a hobby. Going to the bingo once a week, going to the races a couple of times a year. Doesn’t mean you are straight on the path to addiction you know

TheMarzipanDildo · 23/08/2024 20:04

What’s wrong with magic tricks? Sad

Dweetfidilove · 23/08/2024 20:04

Excessive gaming, gambling, figurine collecting, trolling and taxidermy - no thanks!

sunseaandsoundingoff · 23/08/2024 20:05

Major turn off hobbies to me: cycling, fishing, cricket, golf, going out to watch football - especially if rowdy drinking, watching F1, getting the shit haircuts that are shaved at the sides and look like someone's cut around a bowl for the fringe/top, bird watching, stamp collecting.

Edited

bingo is also a shit hobby and the races are just animal cruelty

Sidebeforeself · 23/08/2024 20:08

@sunseaandsoundingoff I didnt say they were good hobbies..just pointing out that they are real hobbies.

Crushed23 · 23/08/2024 20:08

Geeky hobbies are off putting because I like outgoing, sociable men who love exercise and keeping fit as much as I do.

(Yes, I love the cycling bores MN hates!)

Sethera · 23/08/2024 20:14

The trolling and gambling would be a no from me.

Online gaming - would depend how much time he spent on it (which is true to an extent with all non-shared hobbies, but worth specifying for gaming because it is one of those hobbies that some find all-consuming).

No problem with any of the others. I collect figurines and model trains myself; magic tricks would be an ace hobby for a partner; and the others are inoffensive.

Surprised football (as a fan) isn't on the list! It would drive me mad if we had to have football matches on the TV at home.

I once dated a guy who played Warhammer. He was the most sociable and outgoing person.
Geeks aren't all unsociable loners. Hobbies don't define your personality 🤷🏻‍♀️

How is “online trolling” possibly a hobby?

Was “being a dick to people in person” on the list as well?

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 23/08/2024 20:21

Gamers is definitely an unattractive hobby, as is anything that takes up a considerable about of time which affects other people in the household

Whynottrythis · 23/08/2024 20:23

Birdwatching and magic I'd find actively attractive! Train models are fun too.

Taxidermy I'd find quite intriguing.

Gambling and trolling I view as morally wrong so absolutely not.

Gaming is a boring waste of time to me so unless it was done in such a way as to not impact on our lives at all (eg he only did it when I was out of the house, no chores neglected, no very violent games) I would be turned off.

The others I feel neutral over.

@Nineinchgash I think you will find most men enjoy playing with their joystick well into old age 🤣

couldn’t help myself
