Dating would you find this weird?

Heya. I met someone quite recently and went to his place yesterday for a meet up. All went well and he was very nice and we had a lovely evening. He seems to be a bit unusual though and although it didn’t creep me out it confused me a bit if this makes sense so was wondering what other people would make of someone who collects weapons (not guns). I just found it a bit strange to see them mounted on the walls but I know that it’s a hobby so maybe I just watched too many horror films 😂
There was also a baseball bat under the bed which I found really odd (it was sticking out so I saw the handle). I did ask him about it and he said that his biggest fear would be someone breaking into his house at night and that the bat made him sleep better. Do people really do this? I have only ever seen stuff like this on the tv and I almost wanted to laugh but didn’t because it would be mean if he was seriously worried.
Now he seems super nice and interesting but definitely a bit quirky and I’m not sure if other people would find this weird or just me. Thanks!

Is he into martial arts? My son has a few weapons associated with that but he doesn't display them on the walls. But it's not that unusual I don't think. My dad always kept a baseball bat down the side of the bed in case of intruders 😂 we did actually have a prowler/peeping tom looking in my sister's bedroom window in the night and when she went upstairs to tell my dad he shot up, grabbed his bat and ran down the stairs (stark naked!!) and out the front door and chased the guy up the road but didn't catch him luckily 😂

Daisymae55 · 12/07/2024 13:05

What kind of weapons? DH and I have weapons from video games/GoT on our wall 😂 also various weapons around the house from doing martial arts (some stored under our bed)

As for the baseball bat, I have a friend who had a traumatic childhood and she has something similar under her bed “just in case”. Admittedly I was quite shocked when I first saw it.

gardenmusic · 12/07/2024 13:11

Still weighing up wether I would prefer 'decorative weapons man' to the date I had - he had several pictures of John Wayne in every room.

Crispsarethebestfood · 12/07/2024 13:17

My husband has a heavy wooden chair leg under the bed for this purpose; however as I sleep nearest the door I do often wonder if he’s expecting me to use it if required.
TBF as I sleep fully naked; the sight of an overweight sweaty naked menopausal woman with mad sticky up bed hair would probably be enough to frighten any baddies to death anyway, no chair leg needed…..

If there's a reason like my dh who is 3 times world champion in Chinese kuoshu then maybe, but having said that his swords etc are put away in a cupboard out of sight.

The baseball bat is very off putting - you'd only have that if there was a genuine reason you thought someone was going to potentially break in - drugs or similar.

Personally I'd steer clear.

Marshaboymumx2 · 12/07/2024 14:25

My husband suffered with two slipped discs, and used a cane to help him get up and around the house when it was at its worst, he’s ok now, but cane stays down the side of the bed, he said it’ll come in handy if anyone tries to break in….
so once we’ve had two little ones, he’s more paranoid of this, and cautious. Plus how common is it becoming, people capturing footage on ring doorbells of strangers breaking into sheds/cars etc. I don’t think the bat makes him odd, my dad also did this when he had a limousine business, the amount of times he caught idiots on the driveway trying to break into them. So he kept one under his bed. I think it’s clearly more a male thing to do by the looks of it lol.

Farting · 12/07/2024 14:46

Not freaked out at all. Been burgled once when I was in the house.

At some point in the not so distant future were all going to be keeping baseball bats under our beds.

You’ll change your tune on that when you’ve been robbed. Even if you’ve got nothing really, they just need anything they can change up for a drugs fix sometimes.

I'm married to a 3 times world champion martial artist and cage fighter.

My husband on his way to work, was jumped by 2 Africans armed with a knife - he choked them both out even though they'd stabbed him in the chest and snapped off the blade inside of him and sliced open his arm.

I think I'll be ok 🤣

You might be or he might not be around when you need him.

Our street (nice area) had a spate of break-ins during Covid. DH bought a baseball bat to keep under the bed and a thing to jam the front door. So I don’t think it’s that unusual.

Haha! I'll be fine 😜🤣

Findinganewme · 12/07/2024 18:16

The baseball bat thing i have heard of, to be honest. Maybe a burglary in his area, or a violation against someone he knows may have triggered this? The weapons on the wall however, that’s concerning.

Nosygirl01 · 12/07/2024 18:39

Every single person I know has a weapon of some kind in there bedroom or close by to where they sleep. No red flag

No1toldmeaboutit · 12/07/2024 19:07

My ex husband kept a hammer under the bed for this reason 🤣

Grah · 13/07/2024 08:28

We have always had a baseball bat in our bedroom, it's in the wardrobe. If anyone comes upstairs uninvited, I'm hitting a home run on their head.

Emj86 · 13/07/2024 09:18

I don’t think it’s weird, I used to keep a bat under my bed. As for the other items, it wouldn’t be my taste all over the house but it doesn’t give me ‘red flags’. When I first met my now step dad he was an avid gun enthusiast and licence holder and his house was full of replicas. Taxidermy animals etc. they now live in a new build and his hobby has been relegated to the box room. He’s perfectly ‘normal’ btw!

AmelieTaylor · 13/07/2024 09:36

CleanShirt · 09/07/2024 09:25

I always keep something under the bed - so did my parents!

@CleanShirt

how do your dust bunnies feel about that?!

@Lavenderfields121 someone who displays knives etc on the wall wouldn't be my kind of person anyway (not because they're knives though really, I'd feel the same if they were plates or drinking glasses etc, just not my vibe).

I wouldn't like the bat.

I don't have anything like that because a) I don't want to go to bed thinking like that and b) it would just give the intruder something to hurt me with (they'd be able to take it off me easily and I wouldn't be able to use it even if they didn't grab it from me)

IcedCoffeeLover · 13/07/2024 12:42

My grandparents lived in a lovely area and for as long as I’ve known my grandad had a baseball bat next to the bed.
and from that my mum always has too.
when you’re asleep you’re vulnerable. I don’t think having something to protect you is a red flag. Especially if you’re on your own.
Sometimes it’s the nicer areas that are targeted by burglars as stereotypically they would usually have better things to steal.

The weapons however is a bit odd maybe, but everyone is allowed an interest.

AgileMentor · 14/07/2024 09:43

My dad keeps a baseball bat by the front door and before me and my partner moved to a more rural house we kept a hockey stick next to the bed. People collect all types of things doesn’t mean it’s red flag. Someone could post on here saying their partner breathed too loud and most women would say divorce him red flag run

cockadoodledandy · 14/07/2024 16:43

Yes people do that. My partner is a cricket player and we have cricket bats ‘stored’ in most rooms just incase. It’s highly unlikely to ever be needed, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

ginasevern · 14/07/2024 17:02

Personally the combination of weapons on the wall and a baseball bat under the bed would make me wonder. One of them, maybe, but both? I don't want to judge but it would creep me out.
