Guy on OLD asked to message him an interesting fact

Puffpuffpuff · 13/01/2024 10:50

To see if women read his profile to the end, the last sentence of his blurb asked to tell him an interesting fact.

Maybe filtering out bots?

Would you find this fun or twattish and which fact would you share with him if any?

It irked me because he sounded too experienced and strategic at OLD and I wanted someone new on the scene like me and unjaded not someone creating more hoops and barriers at the offset. It's him and guys who should make more effort
He puts the onus on women to impress him, while he sits back. I like traditional roles of men pursuing and trying to impress the lady, not submit an audition for his approval..
I ended up blocking him (I got notified he looked at my profile so I looked at his and then blocked without either of us talking)

Reason 999 why OLD is not for me! 🙄

Wouldn't put me off. An excellent filtering system imo!

This sounds pretty wanky, to be blunt.

Someone dodged a bullet here, but it’s not who you think it is.

Puffpuffpuff · 13/01/2024 12:15

I would much rather discuss something that organically grabbed my interest on his profile than have it prescribed to me how I first must message him like it's a school assignment.

I have no issue messaging first and agree it's done me a favour and saved me time seeing his style in profile.

You are all right, it's enough that his type of approach wasn't going to work for me even if everyone commented that it was a brilliant idea. I suppose I just wanted to see whether other women would see it as off putting too.

It's just not worth you time or energy, and the same applies to anything else that makes them incompatible.

Any time you see something off-putting: riddles/topless pics/poor grammar/cryptic passive aggressive profiles/whatever, they've done you a favour, so cross them off.

Save your energy and interest for potential matches.

At its extreme (not saying this is you for a second) undue focus on the unsuitable ones can be a form of self-sabotage. They are an irrelevance to you.

Maybe wanky but as a woman, my inbox is full of real men. His inbox is fill of OF bot messages. He has more to gain by making an effort. It's his lay back and cherry pick energy, I prefer a more proactive man with passion and enthusiasm in pursuing women he is interested in.
I'm not attracted to passive men. 🤷‍♀️

@Weekenders very true and wise advice thank you 🩷

I don’t know if I’d call this a passive approach. It’s an active approach to finding enough out about a woman to be able to get an idea of compatibility. If the rest of the bio appealed, I’d reply. But if you hate it, then that’s useful info too.

I don't see the difference between starting a conversation with a fact you find interesting vs a topic (ski resorts) you find interesting. Your conversation about ski resorts presumably included things you found interesting about specific ones.

Eh? There’s a massive difference between me seeing a hobby/field of interest that I think is fab and me wanting to know more- to responding to some OLD donut faking an interesting, discerning personality by wanting women to hit him with their best interesting facts 😂😂

I would find a man whose idea of a great conversation starter ‘an interesting fact’ like we are in a fucking work ice-breaker horribly dull….and he wants ME to find the fact? No thanks.

Off topic kind of- but my friend (who I would never date and in recent years who I have pulled away from) had ‘tell me the most interesting thing about you’ to resounding success.

So these women would ‘audition’ for him and be rewarded with a walk about the park. Date 2 would be Netflix and chill, they’d shag and he’d ghost.

I saw the follow-up messages and these women were SURPRISED about the ghost and sent him bloody essays about the importance of being honest and a grown up and how they expected better and wished him well. He did not give a shit.

An absolute eye opening experience for when I found myself OLD when my relationship ended.

When men are literally out there waving their low-effort flag, BELIEVE them.

AgnesX · 13/01/2024 12:24

It would hook me enough to provide a useless fact but it would depend on the response as to what would happen next.

Everyone knows at least one interesting/useless factor at least can find one on Google.

But you're happy to be a passive woman? I mean, fine, if you want, but I don't know why a proactive man would be compatible with a woman who isn't.

I'm also not sure why you seem so annoyed by this guy when both of you have effectively, and wisely, filtered each other out. I'm sure his approach will get him what he wants, and I guess yours will too.

Good on you 👸

Don’t listen to all of the negative comments.

i had your energy and found my fabulous husband. He’s incredible.

I wouldn’t have found him if I had listened to apparently advice about giving dusty passive men a chance.

oneflewoverthe · 13/01/2024 12:26

It sounds so cringy. Would put me off someone from the start. Try hard

An interesting fact truly is not this deep.

OLD - indeed, dating full stop - is all about people auditioning for each other. They just have different methods.

Yep. I’d see it as an ice breaker - some of the apps do have the option for this as part of your profile - and it would depend on what happens next.

Bracksonsboss · 13/01/2024 12:31

Good luck finding your proactive, real man who will put you in your place maybe even give you the odd slap…..

Won't matter though because he'll open doors for OP and buy her flowers when he's feeling guilty

I’m sorry you were raised to think that men who want to organise dates and do nice things for you must have something wrong with them.

This thinking is why women settle, to devastating consequences.

Says a lot about you.

Another one with the same tragic, toxic thinking as @Bracksonsboss.

It’s a fucking shame.

no wonder this board is such a bin fire.

Like hinge- allows men to fake full on personalities through all of the prompts.

Silverbirchtwo · 13/01/2024 12:44

Why didn't he post an interesting fact for you to comment on?

EddieMunson · 13/01/2024 12:47

I like the approach. It offers you an opening to start a conversation that isn’t just “hey”

My hinge experience was that almost every man spends Sundays going for a walk followed by a roast and a very spare moment hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking , camping and lion wrestling. Not of any interest at all to me

Posters who say they want traditional men to fulfil traditional male roles make me roll my eyes. Traditional male roles like keeping a little woman at home cooking, cleaning and child-rearing? No thanks.

A man who's invested in one traditional male role (pursuing a woman, spending money on her) tends to be invested in all of them. Like I said, no fucking thanks.
