How did you meet your DP (not OLD)?

Would love some advice…

After having another disappointing OLD experience, I’d like to go back to meeting guys in real life as that’s how I’ve always met previous partners. My life is not as exciting as when I was younger so not having as many opportunities to meet anyone!

My hobbies and work are mainly with females so not much chance there and I’m also not a big bar goer.

Please give me hope with your lovely stories of how you met your partner naturally. Thank you 🙏

(I’m a single parent to a teenager and 38)

Volunteering. I volunteer so I can meet new people, make new friends etc.

I was volunteering at a community centre for someone’s 70’s themed birthday party on the volunteer run bar.

he was dressed in the worst blonde wig, 70s suit - bright blue. Massive collar… awful
shirt. Kipper tie. Silver platform boots… (his friend does wardrobe work for films like pesky blinders and all sorts so has vintage gear).

anyway - loved his humour. Thought his outfit showed he was up for a laugh. Asked him out and took him on a date a few weeks later. 8 years later… still happy. I’m 48 and he’s 63 now.

other things I do to meet new folks - not just dating - is walking groups, hobby groups, try anything! Talk to anyone!

OLD was a total waste of time.

In our local.pub.

I was with a friend, he came over to say hi, been inseparable almost since.

DaftyLass · 06/06/2023 04:02

He was a friend of a friend, who came along to a group thing.

He was my mechanic. Luckily, I had an old banger and it kept breaking down 😂

We met through a mutual friend who introduced us after he'd spotted me at the gym we both used to go to.

Via work. And the same for my sister and her DH.

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 07/06/2023 22:20

Went to a party with my friend. It was her sister's housewarming. DH was in fancy dress, looked horrendous. We chatted all night, became friends. I didn't want a relationship, he won me over. We didn't plan to go to the party, but the pubs were very boring so we gatecrashed her sister's house! Great decision!

BarelyLiterate · 07/06/2023 22:25

We were good mates at university, and our friendship continued after we graduated. He had seen me at my best & my worst, as I had seen him. Several years later, the relationship sort of evolved into us being a couple.
We are still, first & foremost, best mates. This isn’t a recipe for romance or passion or any of that stuff, but it’s not a bad basis on which to choose a life partner.

Lilbunnyfufu · 07/06/2023 22:30

I meet my dh living in a house share 17 years ago.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 07/06/2023 22:33

Work. I was temping straight after University whilst looking for a permanent job. He was assigned to be my liaison with the programming team. We became friends and then at the Christmas party after a few drinks he told me I was the most beautiful woman he'd ever met. After a few more drinks, he proposed. It did take several more proposals before I agreed to marry him but we've been together 23 and a half years now.

lucylucyapplejuicy · 07/06/2023 22:36

In a bar! Turns out our parents lived across the road from each other too haha.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 07/06/2023 22:37

Work, got together at a work party one night 15 years later we are still very happy!

StMarysTrainee · 07/06/2023 22:38

My DH was a neighbour 5 doors up! I used to walk past his almost daily to go to the park with the kids and my parenting reminded him of his Mum, a huge compliment as she died when he was a young teen and she was a loving woman. Anyways…I wasn’t even thinking about meeting anyone but it became the highlight of my day seeing him. All these years later I still adore him.

StarDolphins · 07/06/2023 22:41

A lot meet at work which is bad news for me as wfh. I’ve never and would never do OLD. Looking back, I have met all previous boyfriends on local nights outs out but they’ve been friends first.

I do go to Waitrose every Friday though….

Stormydanielss · 07/06/2023 22:46
