So been chatting to a man on WhatsApp for 2 months he is working abroad. Today ask me for 4,000 pounds for a work project. He's blocked

Was he working on an oil rig? Or the armed forces? Did a machine suddenly need a broken part replaced? Or maybe he needed hospital money?

Did he call you 'my Queen' a lot.

If so - Nigerian scammer.

NutellaNut · 05/05/2023 00:33

Does he need to spend some of his own money to get the project off the ground first, but he’ll get it all back in expenses plus a big bonus when the project pays off? Yeah, right! Scammer!

Rosiepetalx · 05/05/2023 05:55

Machine needs a new part

LovMydog · 05/05/2023 06:10

Oh that's awful, especially if you thought you were having genuine conversations with him, only for it all to suddenly be revealed as meaningless from his side and nothing more than buttering you up to take advantage of you! Good job you didn't fall for it and you blocked him! Hope you find someone nicer to chat to next time.

GracePalmer33 · 05/05/2023 07:51

I'm really sorry :( 2 months is a long time to be talking to someone to find out their not real. I feel for you xx

Watchkeys · 05/05/2023 08:57

When were you planning to meet?

Rosiepetalx · 05/05/2023 09:14

When he returned to the UK. Date kept changing

OP posts:
Beamur · 05/05/2023 09:26

What a scumbag.

FatFucker · 05/05/2023 09:48

Was he a widow? 🙄

Anyway at least you've learned not to waste your time taking to someone who is "abroad".

If you look back at your text exchanges you'll notice how they never really answer you questions or give feedback on how your day was.

So not engage with anyone abroad. They're not!

But well done blocking him. Onwards and upwards.

Neverthinkjustdo · 05/05/2023 11:06

Yeah the machine needs a new part is typical Nigerian scammer.

There's a channel on YouTube called 'social catfish' I think. It shows a lot of people who are taken in by them.

There's never a real reason people can't face time in this day and age (if they've moved abroad). If they wanted to date long distance, they'd sort it.

Don't date anyone you can't meet within 2 weeks of chatting anyway. If they are temporarily abroad then: 'feel free to get in touch when you are back'.

Neverthinkjustdo · 05/05/2023 11:14

Also be aware that a 'new' person may try to target you now this one is blocked. So I definately wouldn't apart talking to anyone new that you can't meet anytime soon.

Also it's common for them to show you a video of a person talking, but the sound doesn't work/doesn't match the video as they talk over it and pretend that's them via facetime.

Neverthinkjustdo · 05/05/2023 11:26

Actually the actual social catfish website has tools to let you check names, emails, photos ect...(eg: they can reverse image search to see if the pictures have been used in lots of dating sites/edited I think). So maybe worth using them in future if you're not sure of someone's identity.

Rosiepetalx · 05/05/2023 16:00

Can I report him

Report him to Scamhaters United on Facebook.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 05/05/2023 16:52

I would have had fun with it but I'm a massive prick.

Rosiepetalx · 05/05/2023 17:20

Why's the nationality essential here?

Oh I’d have come up with lots of things, I’ll get the part made and fly it out to you ( maybe in my own Lear jet). Now, about my eight children, I’d like to bring them with me, and my grandmother.

VirgoQueen · 05/05/2023 21:56

I'm surprise he didn't say his enemies were after him

No, because these particular tactics come primarily from nigeria. They even have guide books written for it. And guess what...People from Nigeria are called Nigerians. Not everything is racist you know xD

Neverthinkjustdo · 06/05/2023 00:21

And to clarify, by 'they' I mean the scammers.
I'm not saying everyone from Nigeria has a a book called 'how to scam 101' lol.
