So been chatting to a man on WhatsApp for 2 months he is working abroad. Today ask me for 4,000 pounds for a work project. He's blocked

Look very carefully at their spelling ( ironic for me to say I know) my friends THREE millionaire boyfriends all couldn't spell dispite being 1) a oil rig MD who sold and set up and built them 2) a engineer who designed and laid motorways 3) a property tycoon. I knew when she sent one a photo of me and he said she was beautiful thinking it was her ( I'm ten years younger, not blond, etc).

If your an MD engineer you don't get your hands dirty and you can string a sentence together. Lots of shit poems that made no sence ' I love you like the birds singing in the wind on a frosty morning with my cats mum neighbour" just some string of random words. Weird. Arseholes.

OP you've done the right thing. I'm sorry this has happened to you. It must be so disappointing to have your hopes dashed in this way.

On the question of if you can report him, probably not, no. The name you know and any photos you've seen probably don't belong to the person who's actually running the show - they might be stock photos of a model or could have been stolen from someone real's social media pages. This kind of scam is effectively treated as a job by those who do it, they'll do anything they can to try and convince you.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do but keep your wits about you. Definitely don't send any money or continue contact.

Scammers do this deliberately. Smart cookies realise the spelling is wrong, and that this indicates a scammer. Less smart (more vulnerable) people don't spot it. It filters out the clevers, who ultimately are too clever to part with their money.

It's 'despite' and 'sense', btw.

BTW, I believe its often a call centre type scam. Various people picking up the chats, that's why 'he' can answer you night or day. If you're offering to send money, of course.

It’s not racist to point out that the majority of romance scammers are in Nigeria, it’s a fact.

Just like the majority of call centre scammers are in India.

That doesn’t mean all Nigerians or all Indians are scammers, but it’s still possible for a majority of scams to be from those places.

I have a friend who met her DH online and she went out to Nigeria to meet him. Even the Nigerian Embacy were reticent about letting her have a visa because they told her that as he was Nigerian he was likely a romance scammer. He wasn’t as it happens, but he so easily could have been, and the embacy of the country recognising that says everything.

Playing with scammers is pointless. You'll never beat them at their own game. There'll be a whole team of them and all you're doing is wasting time and energy that'd be better spent doing housework or shopping, or at the gym!

My friend is quite a clever lady with a good profession and good spelling. I was gob smacked she feel it three times in quick succession. I think they must have has her on a list as it straight after each other. She obviously feel for it totally. Telling friends and family about her rich boyfriend and calling the police when the Somalian pirates arrived on the rig. I still think part of her believes them.

Yeah, they're just looking for people stupid enough to fall for it, so I guess their filters are working.

Are you serious? THEY ARE ALL scammers? A whole nation of people are all scammers? Are you that ignorant that you choose to peddle this narrative?
Then to say "NO ONE from any other nationality ever does this? Care to share the extensive research that points that NO ONE from any other nationality does this?

This is part of the problem though, not everyone who falls for a scammer is stupid. Sometimes they are just very lonely or isolated. Then, because the message 'you have to be stupid to be scammed' is perpetrated, they feel too ashamed to admit what happened to them, and suck up the losses.

We need to spread the word that ANYONE can be scammed if the conditions are right. You don't have to be stupid or naive to fall for it.

And no, I've never been scammed. Not so far (although I do have an EXTRAORDINARY number of very good looking widowers with one child trying to befriend me on various platforms).
