DH farting problem ruining relationship

So basically what it says on the tin. Married 4 years, everythings fine, really cant conplain at all except for the farting issue. And yes he's had all sorts of tests, diet changes, nothing helps 😣 he's massively self conscious of it, smell is putrid to the point of making me feel sick, and so embarrassing when visiting parents or with friends, I cant seem to get the stench out of the house.
Just to be clear he doesnt eat junk food as im not a fan, we eat healthy, weirdly it seems the more nervous he gets about his flatulence the worse it gets. The weekend was the last straw, I had to sleep downstairs as the smell in our room was disgusting.
He's had a colonoscopy, showed nothing, stool samples etc, theyre saying ibs as he's other wise healthy apart from the putrid farting which is ruining everything.

He must have seen dieticians. He's had a colonoscopy ffs. There'd have been blood tests for coeliacs and all sorts before he even got that far.

Crunchingleaf · 30/11/2022 17:28

There is no diet/ way of eating that suits absolutely everyone. Some people never feel better then when they go vegan and others don’t do well on it. Sometimes you just have to be practical and do what works in your own circumstances.
I love snacking on nuts, BUT my stomach can only handle small portions and not every day. Certain green veggies just don’t work for me because of painful gas. I can have a small bit of cows milk but can’t handle any more then that. It’s been trial and error to find what works for me. My DC just can’t have brown bread even though it’s the healthy choice.
Your husband needs to start eliminating and reintroducing foods into his diet to see what works for him. He may have to consider forgetting about being vegan and go either veggie or even on a low meat/fish diet depending on what works for him and his body.

Thelnebriati · 30/11/2022 17:29

Whatever he is eating is making him sick. His digestive problems aren't just an inconvenience for you, they are an indication of ill health. If he has IBS, every time he eats trigger foods he risks ulcerative colitis, and that puts him at an increased risk of a heart attack.
Stop insisting he eats the diet you approve of and get him on to one thats good for his health.

SparklyMistleToes · 30/11/2022 17:35

OP I hate to break it to you and I don't want this to turn into a contentious topic, but I think the vegan diet may be to blame here. It's well know that a heavily plant based diet can cause excess wind. If your husband is having such severe issues that his farts are compromising your marriage then I think you're being rather selfish to continue forcing a bag an diet on him.

I know another poster suggested Keto and I can personally tell you that I have experienced no bloating or bowel issues with a mainly meat and protein based diet. It's a myth that mean causes gas. Processed meats perhaps. But clean whole foods that the worlds population have been thriving off of for millions of years are not the problem.

Your husband appears healthier and he has lost weight because he's cut out the junk from his diet. He's likely eating far less sugar and bad things now which caused the weight gain previously. Once I cut out carbs and sugar from my diet and focused on clean cuts of real meat (think 1 ingredient like chicken breast / thighs, mince, duck breast, etc) with whole dairy sources like full fat cream, cheese etc I felt bloody amazing! No bloating, no heavy feeling, no lethargy. I've lost over 50lbs in less than a year (and have maintained it for 3) and am super healthy.

I'll leave it there as I don't want this to turn into something that leads to meat eater bashing. But I'd urge you (or your husband) to do a bit of research on the subject.

Dr. Eric Berg has some excellent YouTube videos 👍🏻

No, they'd have checked for cancer and polyps first.

Zero point seeing a dietician when his wife controls what he eats and refuses to take dietary advice on board!

Opentooffers · 30/11/2022 17:44

I think beans and pulses everyone knows are particular fart inducing foods. I find chickpeas ie. hummus particularly bad, though eat them on occasion.
It's also what you drink, so if he has a liking for real ale, that causes evil smells.
Interesting suggestion prebiotic- always found them to cause it more. In fact had incredible exposure to putrid smells on a holiday caused by DS's mate being faddy about yakult at the time - DS, understandably slept on the sofa in preference to sharing a room with him, it was that bad.
Tried prebiotics myself once to try and boost my immunity after a bad run of consecutive viruses causing life misery - yep, more wind, so stopped that.

In terms of his diet pre vegan i just meant he ate a lot of fast food crap, McDonalds, kebabs, takeaway, so very unhealthy basically. He couldn't cook basically anything from scratch, now he helps prepare meals etc. A lot slimmer, has a lot more energy.

Typical day (as someone asked) would be almond butter on toast, hemp seeds, lunch would be hummus, pita with either tomatoes or lettuce, we have snacks too and try to change it up so it doesnt get boring but we can eat dark chocolate, crackers, plenty of nuts, soup, fruit, dinner can be noodles, steamed broccoli with vegan cheese, sweet potatoes, tofu.. so we do get plenty of calories and protein etc .. not an exhaustive list, and we both enjoy rice which is quite filling.

The farting seems to be worse at night, and in the morning the noisy bowel movements are more noisy 😣 he has a lot of built up gas but after bowel movement he feels better. Also after farting it seems to make him feel better, and they're long farts not short bursts if that makes sense?

Fuck sake he could have given those things up and been a lot healthier without going vegan which clearly isn't helping things.

OldFan · 30/11/2022 18:09

@jamoncrumpets As a PP says, they do rule out anything dodgy as a priority, though they might give people a handout on FODMAP or something too I guess.

But if they were given that they've obvs ignored it.

OrlandointheWilderness · 30/11/2022 18:09

That diet would have me permanently on the toilet I'm afraid! It obviously isn't working for him, he needs to change things.

Bluerisotto · 30/11/2022 18:23

What kind of a smell is it? If it's sulphur it could be lactose intolerance especially if he gets diarrhoea too.

Try cutting out dairy as a test
Charcoal tablets
Those fart filtering pants you can buy?
Windeze tablets
Fodmap diet

Yes, you keep talking about how he used to be really unhealthy and eat loads of takeaways but now he is vegan he doesn't. You do realise that there are more dietary options than either 'eat shit junk food all the time' or 'vegan'.

And that that middle ground is probably what is actually most healthy for an omnivorous human whose vegan diet is giving him abnormally disgusting smelling wind.

hamstersarse · 30/11/2022 18:40

This thread is brilliant

A real lesson in how ideology can warp your behaviour and the consequences of this. And in this case, the consequences being divorce worthy toxic wind.

My arse would explode.

Additionally I would be in a lot of pain.

What makes you think we are omnivores?

We don't have teeth or claws that allow us to take down prey. Out teeth grind from side to side like herbivores. We don't have short intestines to push rotting meat through our bodies quickly. We sweat from our pours instead of panting like meat eaters tend to. And eating any kind of meat leeches (I believe its phosphate...?) Vital minerals from our bones (because we can't break it down otherwise). We get heart disease from over consumption of meat (dogs are omnivores and yet that's not something they tend to get). Also, we have no prey drive.

I suppose ýou could argue that we have eyes that are front facing like some predators. Or that maybe we are meant to be 'opportunist omnivours', scavengers...But overall, I think it looks more likely that we are meant to be herbivorous. Body wise at least.

DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand · 30/11/2022 02:43

I'm vegan too, and understand not being able to be in a relationship with a non-vegan, no matter what. I really don't believe that the vegan diet is to blame. Sure, within the vast vegan options there may be something that disagrees with him, of course. Adding rotting carcasses to his diet sure isn't going to help.

To those ignorant about plant-based eating, please check out NutritionFacts.org, and watch The game changers on Netflix.

Op, no pun intended, really hope you get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, try those shreddies pants linked upthread.

Few PP are telling OP that her DH needs to start eating meat again. What we're all saying is that clearly his current vegan WOE is not agreeing with him, and it is worth looking at FODMAPS to discover which foods - fruits, legumes, pulse and vegetables - are triggering his noxious wind, along with his other digestive issues. Once he knows which fruits, legumes, pulses and veggies to avoid, he can continue being a vegan.

jamoncrumpets · 30/11/2022 19:19

Except @coconotgrove that will leave so few safe foods he wouldn't be able to eat a balanced diet.

He's already shat a load of his body weight away. His nutrient retention must be pretty low.

pocketvenuss · 30/11/2022 19:21

@Pinkbonbon horses sweat. Chimpanzees are our closest cousins and they are omnivores, meat doesn't leech anything from our bones. There are many, many examples of scavenger omnivores that are not predators. We have incisors and canines. We have shorter and simpler intestinal development than herbivores. We are natural omnivores

jamoncrumpets · 30/11/2022 19:25

Apes sweat too. That's why gorilla enclosures smell like the boys changing room at high school.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/11/2022 19:25

What makes you think we are omnivores?

Well the fact that we are omnivores bears out that we are omnivores. From the Inuit to the Ayorea we eat animal proteins. Back into prehistory and geographically distinct places we eat what is available.

I'm actually willing to bet that meat features more in human diets historically than the grasses which make up so much of modern diets. And nuts which are mentioned a lot in vegan diets.

Seafood was certainly an important food in our development.

It wouldn't have been meat every day, but honey, eggs, meat, shellfish etc would have featured.
