I'm pretty sure my friend is dead

So I made a friend on a social media platform and we got chatting on discord (FB messanger but for gamers) about games and random stuff. We've been friends for a while now and talk maybe every 2-3 days between work and me having a young family.

I became very close to them, they are like an older sibling to me and put up with my nonsense alot of the time. However recently they've been acting strange vanishing for longer than usual. Fine, life is busy.

But a week ago now, they had a brake down on me. Mentioned wanting to die vanishing ect. How they could just move on be free the lot and I tried to be there as much as I could, dispite being in a different country. Held their hand virtually. And now they are just gone.

I know a week is to long to be thinking, I think they are dead. They could just be working or busy or just don't want to talk to me anymore. But after what happened Im very concerned and confused. The wanting to die, vanishing. I don't know their last name. I dont even know if alot of what they've said about themselves is true. I'm not nieve, the Internet is a place where people can fully hide who they are after all.

But I just have a horrible feeling after exploding on me about how much they want to be free, how they want to die ect. That maybe they went and did it?

You may never know.

Hillrunning · 06/11/2022 16:08

It is possible, bit if you know little about them, there really isn't anything you can do. Got any shared friends who you could ask?

TheMilkyWeigh · 06/11/2022 16:09

I’d Google the first name and town where he lives to see if anything has been reported in the local news. I’m assuming he’s young, young enough where death is unusual and would have been tragic. So possibly the local news reported it. Or an obituary was posted somewhere.

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:10

@Hillrunning sadly not. Its my stupidity for making friends on the Internet I guess.

I know if they don't turn up, then we'll I'll be forever wondering what happened.

How long have you been friends?

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:11

@TheMilkyWeigh i don't know... Cities in Washington state are VERY large

Pinkbonbon · 06/11/2022 16:11

Hopefully not.

Just be aware that there a lots of sick people online who get off on befriending you and then claiming cancer/car accidents/suicidal tendencies. Watch a few episodes of 'catfish' and you'll see how unfortunately common it is.

If nothing else, consider why you've got so close (shared zo much of yourself) with someone online who's last name you don't even know. That's a bigger worry imo.

girlmom21 · 06/11/2022 16:12

Happened to my sibling. The friend had been arrested for breaching bail conditions.

LIZS · 06/11/2022 16:13

Did you post about this before, wanting to send police around even though you only had a vague idea of name and where they lived? Online "friends" can disappear, take a break and reinvent themselves as they so choose. It is a bit of a stretch to assume they are dead after a week although sadly you may never find out. Perhaps focus on why you may be feeling so bereft at lack of contact.

BritWifeInUSA · 06/11/2022 16:15

I live in Washington state! Outside of Seattle and Spokane most cities are pretty small. The eastern half of Washington, with the exception of Spokane, is very empty.

Im curious as to where this person lives now.

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:16

@TheMilkyWeigh surched first name city and because her name is the name of a car that's all that comes up! However I did find power outage so maybe there is hope and I'm being over dramatic. It's just the whole I want to die speach.

OP posts:
Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:17

@LIZS I'm not nieve. I'm not going to be phoning 911 and calling the police saying help I think my friend is dead.
I know they could have just vanished, however after having someone scream I want to die at you would you not be concerned.

BritWifeInUSA · 06/11/2022 16:19

We have had power outages here and just had our first significant snowfall of the winter so that may have something to do with it.

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:21

@BritWifeInUSA it's possible. I hope so.

Like I said It's the fact she said she wanted to die that's got me Freaked.

OP posts:
BritWifeInUSA · 06/11/2022 16:27

Was she getting any help for her mental health?

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:30

@BritWifeInUSA she couldn't afford it.

OP posts:
BritWifeInUSA · 06/11/2022 16:43

There’s no cost involved. Either insurance covers it if you have insurance or AppleHealth (WA state government program) covers it if you don’t. So that doesn’t make sense or ring true. I think you’re being lied to by this “friend”.

Bumbletrees · 06/11/2022 16:50

It was probably some pervy old man….

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:55

@Bumbletrees doubt it. We spoke on the phone ect.

OP posts:
BritWifeInUSA · 06/11/2022 16:57

Did she ever ask for money?

IncompleteSenten · 06/11/2022 16:58

Creates relationship

Confides in you

Tells you all their problems

Tells you they can't afford to get help

Has 'breakdown' at you

Vanishes

It's very possible they'll reappear with 'medical bills'.

Be cautious.

PoundShopPrincess · 06/11/2022 17:03

Statistically, they're more likely to be a scammer than to be dead.
As a PP said, it might be worth trying to build up some RL relationships for friendship and support.
Anyone who puts any effort into online friendships has to be prepared for it all to be fake or a scam. The fact this has spooked you so much means you're probably better avoiding online friendships. The internet is full of unscrupulous people Flowers

pastabakeonaplate · 06/11/2022 17:04

You could ask those catfish people on mtv to check them out?

😂😂😂 you’re not being serious right? Or are you….

Iwanttogo · 06/11/2022 16:55

@Bumbletrees doubt it. We spoke on the phone ect.

Since you have her tel#, can you cross-check the # to find her full name/exact location and check for online info about her in her area?
